You know when I think about it, that might be the main reason why I hated FF12 so much. I mean it's fun to play and everything, but it just didn't feel like FF to me... I wish Square went back to the format (and by format I mean turn-based, random encounters, epic boss fight music, and great storylines to boot) they used for FF8/9, definitely my favorite games in the series (post-SNES games that is... For me, FF6 and beyond have all been top notch fun and quality no matter what new battle systems they've experimented with.
Personally, I'm hoping for another dramatic change in the battle system. I'm liking the real time approach to the newer RPGs as well. Turn-based random encounters are archaic now. Yea it was fun when we first tried it, but video games are constantly evolving into better things. In FF12 you could choose your level of involvement from battle to battle, a step in the right direction imo.
Try looking at each new FF as a completely different game from their predecessors.
