The wrestling games are more "powerful" and "epic" than an NHL exhibition... >.< At least they have storylines.

As long you don't tell me you like the character design, I'm fine with that.

lol I hate those games just to clarify... I just found it funny that he claimed sports games can be "powerful", and the wrestling games are the only ones that actually possess a story (and they suck generally), therefore his argument still sucks.

I'm not reading most of this thread for fear of spoilers but:

    Final Fantasy Tactics

    Final Fantasy 7

Were the most like... emotional storywise for me.

Resident Evil 1, I was like 12, live in the middle of nowhere, had a babysitter that night that was off studying in the office most of the night. I was playing in the dark yada yada.

Couldn't get myself to even look outside lol.

Re: Most Powerful game you have ever played

I kind of skipped through the thread myself to avoid possible spoilers, so I'm not sure if someone mentioned this yet or not, buts...

The scene atop Death Peak in Chrono Trigger always gets me every time.

As well, the entire Xeno series is saturated to the fullest with deep cutting emotional twists and turns. Xenogears had me questioning popular religion when it first came out, way back when I was in like, 9th or 10th grade.

Also, whichever Suikoden was the once with Prince "Blight" or w/e the poor translation was, where that wolf spirit thing like consumes the lives of all the people in that one castle town was pretty serious business.

Aside from RPGs, I think it'd be a tie between Tetris and Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blow-out.

Re: Most Powerful game you have ever played

Kirianna that NHL'04 story is awesome. Perhaps the disconnect between the two of us and other posters is about how we think a game is meaningful to us. Maybe I'm inferring too much, but I think what our experiences (you with NHL'04 and your friends and me with more open-ended games) is that the game enabled us to do something outside of what we expected. You were able to have this fun and meaningful event with your friends centered around a game - I think that's a pretty powerful thing and it's probably something you still talk about unlike just goal x of game y that was on TV. In my case I derive a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction from more open-ended games simply because I have the chance to author my own gaming experience. To me, that is something very special and yes even 'powerful.'

To me, JRPGs are like reading a book. You start at the start, do x, y, and z and eventually you get to the end. (Although this can be said of all games really; it's just a limitation of the medium.) More modern games are introducing branching storylines as well as a greater level of choice in how the game progresses; not to mention multiple-endings which have been around for well more than a decade. However, I still feel that there is a big limitation on the interaction possible in the game - much in the same way you get with reading a book. Great writing and literature has moved me to tears in the past and will do so again. But to me, I don't necessarily want my games to be like reading a book with menu choices in the middle. Because it is interactive entertainment, I want to be able to tell my own story within the framework that is provided to me through the game.

With all honesty, making my own unique game experience in an open-world FPS like Crysis or a hybrid game like Deus Ex is a more meaningful experience than watching a 15-minute tear-jerker of a cutscene in a RPG. That's just my opinion and I know it doesn't mesh with what other posters here are into, and that's fine. But going and criticizing Kirianna's story because it didn't fit with your concepts of how people can enjoy gaming is pretty narrow-minded. The OP asked for what games invoked a great deal of emotion in you and I think his/her story trumps all of yours because it was a totally unique and player-created experience, instead of a receptive and narrative one as are being cited left and right in this thread.

PS: Grim Fandango - that game rocked. I didn't get to do anything different, but man what a good story.

The thing is, most of the "uniqueness" of an open-ended game (which we even had way back in the day) isn't necessarily plot-centered. Kotor and Oblivion, and to a smaller extent Mass Effect, can give you some control over the plot, but it's usually still based on pre-written content. The part that you do make for yourself is the characters (especially in MMOs), but even JRPGs often allow some degree of character customization. Some prefer plot flexibility over character deveopment flexibility, but the latter was pretty decently open-ended way back in Dragon Quest 3, which had almost no plot flexibility.

There's one particular scene in Suikoden V that may very well have been the best cut-scene ever, and it's certainly heart-wrenching. Most of Shadow Hearts 2 was also very emotional, Yuri is the most well-written tortured protagonist I've ever come across. However, I'd have to give this honor to Chrono Cross - no other game has ever made me ponder the Universe and my own existence by the end. And Suikoden II gets a mention just because it's the fucking best at everything.

    Suikoden 2

    Tactics Ogre

Shadow Hearts 2 towards the end

SaGa Frontier 2 had it's moments even though the story was largely too choppy and lacking continuity

Not an RPG, but Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater sucked you in and took you for a ride. Loved every minute of it and left you wanting more when it was over.
