    Who fucking cares.

If it bothers you filter it. If you don't want to and it still bothers you then stop being such a fucking pussy.

I just have no appriciation for people by are bothered by something like this. Only time you can get angry is if you get spam checked but that is something else.

    Re: Examining players

On my very first day on FFXI (my first MMO ever), I /checked some guy. I had just read about the command so I wanted to try it out! He went off on me, typing in JP squiggles and all caps, making angry gestures at me.

That stuck in my head, and so now, years later, I still worry about checking people and try never to do it if they don't have a bazaar up. (Sometimes I get so curious what some piece of armor is I break that, but that's like once a month or so.)

I wish everyone was free to check everyone else (heck, what's the command there for if not to use it?), but I still half-cringe every time I check someone without a bazaar.

Edit: I don't mind people checking me, in fact I like it! I'm proud of my armor and don't mind people having a look.

Some JP squiggled at you and now you're afraid to check people? Pussy.

I don't want to be rude in-game any more than I wish to be RL. Take that as you will.

    Re: Examining players

Believe it or not, I had a very similar experience. In my first 2~3 month of the game(NA release), I was lvling in Ghesba, and I checked a JP rng who was afk there. An hour later, when I went back to town, I get this angry JP tell saying how I was rude. I wasn't sure what to say, but the guy just kept going on and on. Basically, he came back from afk, saw that i checked him in the log, and flipped out. From that point on, I've been very conscious about checking JP or being checked by JP.

I don't understand why people get mad about it either. If you don't like it simply filter.

Personally, I check about everyone i come accross, because it amuses me.

I do that. I don't check ppl for no reason, but if you check me, you're giving me a free pass to check you. So why not.

I remember when I was on Shiva I checked this guy named Blackdeath, and he turned fucking crazy, he spammed me "death" and spam checked me for like an hour. I don't think he was japanese though. Fuck him. lol

    Re: Examining players

It'd be interesting to see what the /check-sensitive JPs do when another JP checks them. I'd say that the only reason to swap gear or be angry about it is if they lack confidence in their gear (in other words, they suck.)

I remember a rather humorous experience in Palborough Mines a few years back (Mining was the shit at level 30.) I randomly /checked some guy running by to see if he was also mining or not. He immediately gear swapped and shouted (with auto-translate) "{Examination} {Japanese} RUDE". Now, at that point, I remembered that this was not the first time this guy had gone off when I checked him--he was the same guy who had bitched me out on the Bastok-Jeuno Airship a few weeks previous, only then he was speaking perfect English. I pointed out in /tell that masquerading around as a JP was retarded, especially if he's not even going to try and use the IME. He then launched into a diatribe which may or may not have included something about my mother. I can't be sure, it was a while back.

    Re: Examining players

Generally, if someone you check gets offended, it's because they're wearing something they don't want you to know they're wearing.

If I'm walking around in the best gear for my job, fuck yea I'm going to wanna be checked. If that THF I see wearing a dragon harness starts screaming at me for checking him, it's because i wanted to see the signature on his harness, and found out he's using a NQ misercorde and a NQ amemet mantle.

    Love this.

"Soandso gazes you." is the translation I was given by a friend.

It's the context, without asking it is leering, and rude, if you ask, it's just because you want to see their gear.

    Just a culture thing.

    Re: Examining players

I can't say I've had the pleasure of having a Japanese player go crazy about me checking him, and I live in Whitegate so I do it often. The only one that comes to my mind is "Godly" on my server, and he just takes the shit way to far. I had pics on my old PC of some of the /tells and they were great. He takes it wayyyy to far, to the point he makes death threats to come and kill you at your house with the mafia and all types of shit. Classic.

    Re: Examining players

You know, I haven't come into contact with any player that goes crazy over getting checked since that time...

I was leveling drg i think, or maybe it was as far back as smn (like 4 years ago), but anyway we had gathered a party in Jeuno and teleported to altepa to fight crabs in kuftal tunnel. On our way walking through the desert i see something on the JP blm that i had never seen before at that point. So I examined her to see what she was wearing. She instantly stopped in her tracks and went into a hysteria of mad rage. She was shouting in party chat," You NO LOOK ME!! NO LOOK ME!!!" Then she warped herself back to Jeuno and disbanded from the party.

I think some JP though are getting used to the fact that we don't consider it rude, and that for us its just a way of quelling the curiosity that our cultures have taught us. Especially being America we want to know whats around us at all times and we want to be in on all the latest new fashions (especially if you live in beverly hills).

... I love being checked lol.

And I'll check whomever I damn well please.. if it REALLY was a huge cultural taboo fucking SE.. the most japanese gaming company of all time would remove that functionality...

    So.. whatever lol.

I think they do it just to be dicks. If it was such a problem, like the above said, SE would've done something about it.

Or maybe they see it as checking out one's penis, and how happy would you be if you had to show your noodle and two rice grains? Would you filter it so you don't know when people are doing it? Exactly.

    Re: Examining players

I'm usually scooting around on my RDM, which has extended macros for swapping two-hundred pieces of gear a minute, so someone either /checks me while i'm in the middle of swapping gears, or I just hit a macro to cockblock them just for giggles. I'm bored 99% of the time, so 'acting JP' is a interesting way of passing the time. "w [fish] [fish] [fish] [Yes, please.] [No thanks.] [You can have this.] [Escape]"

I don't really check people unless they have the bazaar for a cop-out. I don't enjoy being obvious. The bazaar is a secret squirrel cop-out for checking someone out.
