    Just a culture thing.
See, I don't get it. Why would SE, a Japanese company, add a command that offends its own people? If it was really all that offensive to all JP people, wouldn't /check be something more like /checkrequest, then the person you were trying to check would have to approve it or not?

Or maybe it's just something that non-JP will never understand.

It doesn't really happen on asura where JPs get angry, the ones that do get pissy now are probably from other servers, since our server is heavily NA influenced, the JPs have taken to our culturings and not the other way around . A jp HNMLS leader on my server checks me anytime I walk past him, and I check him if he has something interesting I wanna see, no offense taken either way, and it's very understood, thank goodness.

Perfectly showcases why most NA players are jackasses. It's a simple cultural sensitivity issue. If you know it may sometimes offend people, a mature/normal person would avoid doing so. However, retards would not only do it, but do it more often. It's been stated many times before, it's translated differently in JP. Now, if you wanna still check JP players, do so, but don't be a fucktard about it(like shown above). Granted, going berserk after being checked is messed up, but checking just to annoy people is equally as messed up. There is always the polite way of doing things, the the 3 year old way of doing things. Seems like most ppl in this thread belongs to the latter.

    /sigh

Wish more mature people would play the game.

Haven't seen this mentioned earlier in the thread, but if you use /c "name" you won't get kicked out of the check window when they swap gear. You get kicked out because they blink and you lose targeting.

I had a good laugh one time watching some guy blink for a minute while i was still looking at his gear.

Maturity is merely conforming to the standards of the society you're in. In America it'd be immature to keep doing something that offends others, but do you really think the Japanese truly care about offending others and being culturally sensitive? They're incredibly racist. I don't see why we should be sensitive to a culture which promotes self-superiority unchecked.

See, I have to disagree. You're saying that an NA player is a jackass just because he'll check someone if he wants.

One time. One /check. The simple fact of the matter, imo, is that it's a game, and it's a function of the game, and the JP play it, hell it was CREATED by a Japanese company, and their being 'offended' about it, is retarded. There's zero reason for it. Most of them probably know what it equates to on OUR side of the translation, so yea, it's probably the NQ Misercorde/Amemet Mantle they don't want ya seeing as somoene above mentioned lol.

I don't see how anyone could be 'checking someone just to annoy them' by checking them one time in bypassing. Just doesn't equate to me. I'm not gonna send every freakin person a /tell asking if I can /check them once.

Wow, so many things wrong about what you've said, I'm not even sure where to start. How are Japanese racist again? They promote "self-superiority" (where do you come up with these terms?) how? From every single person who has the slightest knowledge of the Japanese culture, you'd realize it is one of the most polite society there is.

Ok, let's assume you think they're insensitive. Hmm, so because they're being jackasses, that means you must be a jackass back.

You really didn't read what I said. It's a function of the game, surely he is free to do so. All I said was, knowing somebody might get offended by it and still doing it freely is a jackass thing to do. For example, it's fucking annoying when ppl lot shit that drops during exp parties. I know it's within my right to lot, and lotting is part of the game, people can also filter out lot. So does that mean whenever anything drops in a party, I should lot on them?

Oh, and there IS a reason why ppl are offended by checks. If you read the thread, perhaps you might find out!

I'm guessing you've never been to the real japan, outside of the neon lights and the tourist track. Or read a book on it either. You obviously know nothing. If you would ilke me to recommend some reading to you, let me know.

Yeah, the problem with the whole NA/JP thing in Japanese culture is that there has never been a civil rights movement in the country of Japan. There has been no need to because most of everyone there is Japanese. As such there is a great fear/fascination with anything foreign there.

I tend to deal with people the way "I" feel they should react to a situation.

If you're fucking retarded and get offended by checks, that's not my problem, that's your problem. I don't do it to piss you off, and you shouldn't get pissed off, but if you do get pissed off, it doesn't mean I'm a jerk, it just means you have some sort of mental handicap. I may feel sorry for you, but I'm going to treat the special people just like everyone else, to make them feel welcomed and comfortable.

    Re: Examining players

I remember way back when I just started, and I checked some high level JP guy, he went off on how it was rude, and I should ask before checking people. I remembered that and the next time some JP player had some interesting gear I wanted to see, I asked him if I could check him.

and he had no idea what the fuck I was trying to say.

Now I check people whenever I feel like it, and I don't mind getting checked at all.

Oh, I read what you said, and I still think you calling an NA player a jackass for saying they will check someone just because purely wrong. Heh. And if you read what I said: "Most of them probably know what it equates to on OUR side of the translation,"

Well, I think I gave off the impression that I know on their side it's translated a bit sexually, and that most of them know that for us, it's nothing of the sort. As I stated, I feel there's no reason they should be offended unless they don't want people seeing their possibly-crummy gear. Also, if you read the thread, where I state that they have TV shows close to near-porn, something America would never see on daytime TV, then it makes even LESS sense that they would be haughty about this kind of thing. I don't know much about Japan, but I have heard they are very loose with that kind of thing.

Also Archi's "If you're fucking retarded and get offended by checks, that's not my problem, that's your problem. I don't do it to piss you off, and you shouldn't get pissed off, but if you do get pissed off, it doesn't mean I'm a jerk, it just means you have some sort of mental handicap. Amen, lol.

Check is a function in game meant to be used.
I usually dont mind when ppl /check me etc, and i dont mind to /check ppl myself, its always fun to see what stuff ppl use on their toons, fun to see gewd gear or totalgimps you can /emote stabs (playername) in the face over internet for having gimped gear.

    Re: Examining players

How to not be misunderstood, and not piss off anyone ever: /t <t> /check ok?

Couple seconds later, 90%+ of the time, you will get back "Ok".

It's just the way society is over there, if you were on a bus in America and some guy was reading the newspaper and you saw something interesting, you would strike up a conversation about it with him.

If you were curious about the newspaper the guy next to you on the train in Japan is reading, you would ask him about it, instead of just reading it over his shoulder.

Small country, lots of people, personal space is very treasured.

Carby is JP heavy, most have realised NA's just don't understand why they get offended, and if they get checked without asking, just assume it's an NA and shrug it off.

Only had a couple of people get pissy enough to blink at me and spam check me, I just sent em a /t ^.^ /check (theirname) I can still see your gear, your blinking amuses me.

Usually I just ask, sometimes I forget, I didn't grow up with that habit.

    Re: Examining players

One time in Jeuno this JP started /slap'ing me after I /c'ed him and I didn't know it because I had emote filters on Apelila. This went on for a while, eventually a friend asked me later 'why's xxxxx slapping you? He's been doing it for like 10 minutes now'.

So I turned off my emote filter, and next to the someone donkyrapes <t> and other such fun was 'Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila' over, and over, and over.

And over. So I /c'ed him again to see what he was (since I didn't remember checking him in the first place) and discovered 'oh yeah, thats the osode bard with the panties and NQ 36 CHR rings'. I also got to see an angry barrage of siggly lines, and someone telling him to give his hand a rest. And that double entendre gave me a funny idea.

Here is what I did, and here is how you deal with people who /slap you repeatedly in town.

    Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila
    Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila
    Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila
    /em says harder
/em says Oh yeah Crackerhaterkun, slap that ass
    Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila
    /em likes it
/em makes sexy eyes @ Crackerhaterkun
    Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila
    Crackerhaterkun slaps Apelila
    and so on.

I wish I still had the screenshots, I meant to ask a friend what he told me after a couple minutes of that.

I'm sorry but since when does the internet = the place where you are from? It is a global community; I'd say it's just as rude to assume that someone thousands of miles away is supposed to adhere to your personal social code, as it is to impose your beliefs and social rules on someone else. And anyways, at the end of it does checking someone mean you're from Africa trying to greet someone with your left hand?

Seriously, all of these people who are defending Japanese people's "personal space" really should lighten up a bit. While I agree that there is a mature way to do things, for someone to get bent out of shape and start cussing someone out in /tell is just as immature as spam checking someone. No party is free from responsibility.

I think the most important thing here that people on both sides of the fence need to realize is that our cultures are different, and not to fly off the handle like some wacko for such a trivial reason. There are obviously going to be miscommunications or misunderstandings, and instead of being an asshole and freaking out about it, try to explain it a bit so that people understand -why- they are offended.

People that get offended at others for using a client command available to them, and knowingly having the ability to filter the message, are dumb.
