Competence is not something you develop.. its something you already have. Skill is something you don't have and is developed by experience.

way to define your own words. have you ever met a competent doctor, lawyer, accountant, bus driver, cook? i bet most of them couldn't have been called the same thing 3 years before they graduated high school.

competence is having skill and knowing how to apply it. by acquiring skills you didn't have before or through simple experience someone can learn to be competent.

If you want to argue semantics, I win. To be a competent doctor/lawyer/etc you first need to gain the skills of your profession through experience. No doctor or lawyer gets to practice on their own without first getting some experience with people who've already done it. These people were all first competent at the english language, then gained competence in other areas which led to their expert skill.

Clearly competence is something that you need in order to aquire new skills. Take a look:

Sorry, I'd rather take 18 competent players with hectic real life schedules over 64 incompetent leeches who only show up to get items and contribute nothing but attendance numbers. All points prove is that one person is there more than another. It doesn't prove anything else but a statistic. Logically you can deduce that the higher the statistic the more dedicated the player is to the linkshell, but you can only come to this conclusion if you ignore the variable known as real life committments.

I wouldn't care if someone got more than I did if they showed up more because frankly they will probably play more and thus get more use out of it than I would... but to say that makes them more dedicated is a fallacy.
