I rarely use ele gear. Was told Morrigans was crappy for blm yesterday because it didn't have skill on it and I just went 'lolwut?'. Theres a few mobs you need skill for but for 95% of all end game stuff I just wear a nice mix or full damage.

Was it by a RDM or BLU, perchance?

330 is about as high as you need to go for any HNM in the game, at least based on the master BLM guide Kanican posted. Pretty good read if you bring BLM to a lot of events.

Warning: Hit the WC, and fill up a drink...it's gonna take you awhile to read all that.

    so many wonderful posts...

And yeah, it's just a "zomg I can get 3xx Skill" thing really.

And that BLM guide is..strangely insightful.

yes, because like 20ish maybe damage more on a thunder IV is worth losing 6skill and 2 conserve mp (morrigan's vs. weskit nq)

    OK

it's your preference anyway, do what you want--hardly anyone has a robe like us anyway so it barely matters

I never get resisted on anything that isn't like Ouyru and I'm rarely pressed for MP that I'm dependant on a skill that randomly kicks in.

    Never?

Careful with words like that.... I've seen you resisted on random Dynamis mobs recently. I'll start taking screen shots if you insist.

And I didn't say it was just because of the elemental skill, Geno pretty much summed it up. The minor increase in damage isn't worth that odd resist that slips through due to the lowered skill, and the missed MP for nukes from the conserve MP.

    Situational really.

Of course things are always dependent on other factors, but I have to agree with Kuno here. I got Robe way back in March, but I still kept my Genie Weskit all the way until just a week ago. I really liked it and would 'test' it out in normal situations and elemental skill required situations to try to prove to myself it was still worth keeping in my inventory and using. I have to say though, it just was not worth keeping once I have a Morrigan Robe

I'm also flattered that others would link my blog or that blm guide; I'm glad some people enjoy it. The whole 330 elemental skill claim is purely through my eye-balling and I didn't even attempt to get proof on it. I do, however, think most career BLMs with access to the best gear will generally agree around some number in that range being where you want to be. A decked out BLM can hit 329 skill with AF2 hat, AF1 hands, Torque, and Merciful - this is the setup I use now; it provides you the best "trade-offs" (meaning the least damage and INT, another possible resist mod, sacrificed to boost your skill).

Also, just to cover my tracks, it's situational and depends on what other gear you're using. If you have a Robe to begin with, let's just all agree it's a good problem to have.

    Re: Elemental Magic Help

If you've got a Morrigan's Robe you are very likely to also have a Relic Hat, and it's generally agreed beyond 330 skill doesn't do very much. You'll always be resisted about ~5% of the time anyway, so I basically wouldn't take off Morrigan's once getting it for nukes. I'd only consider wearing something like Errant Body over it if you really want the Enmity-.

(P.S. Kaeko, the LJ is great. You convinced me to finally write a standing macro rather than just throwing on Terra's+Relic body manually. I may pick up a Cheviot Cape sometime soon too. )

Yeah nice LJ. It seems like it would be great for any new blm. It was very well planned out (I could never write something like that cause it would be a huge blob of crap) and some parts (like how to hold temp) I had no about and want to try out.

That's not entirely fair. Magic accuracy is subject to the same cap as melee accuracy, and when a BLM says "I don't get resisted in X situation with Y gear" it's generally understood by other BLMs to mean "I have capped or sufficiently high accuracy in that situation". You can use Morrigan's in 95% of situations, and it worst you have to build around it (e.g. AF2 hat for AF1+1) and you'll still be better off than with Igqira/Genie. In fact that last 5% when I use AF2+1 body (long fight on high-resist target where slight skill increase and small enmity reduction is going to show a better longterm benefit than higher damage/mp from morrigan) could probably be accomplished nearly as well with Morrigan. But certainly in situation like Dynamis, Morrigan is superior. Taking a screenshot of an unlucky resist would be analogous to screenshotting melee missing an attack round and saying "AHA you should have been eating sushi!"

I'll have to play with it when I get mine, just seems like Conserve MP + elemental skill wins out over 40 extra damage.

    Re: Elemental Magic Help

everyone seems to forget the combination of elemental skill and conserve mp and maybe doing like 20 less damage

I don't remember a melee attack for 20 damage making a big deal in dynamis

I do remember 20 dmg possibly being the difference between killing a mob in five spells while soloing instead of four though <<<<

Let's think a little harder before you have a hard on for super awesome not-blue gear.

And Tonko, it's not 40 damage. Not that much. I'll go show you on Phaubo or something.

and double post because I can:

    Morrigan's Robe, effectiveness by job:

BLM: meh, a little extra damage
RDM: omgwtfamazingdamageincrease (and yes, I nuke on rdm and am equipped to do it, if you want to get into an rdm nuking debate make another topic and I'll be glad to shut you up)

I think the damage boost was about 19-23 damage for me (excluding mobs like puddings) - not a huge improvement.

The question I think people are having here is how often to use the Robe, not if it is useful enough to carry around with you. Some people want to nuke in it no matter what the situation; others feel that maybe the trade-offs need to be considered a bit more.

I'd like to think that anyone who can get a Morrigan's Robe at this point in time will have enough sense and experience to test it out themselves. A lot of this has to do with what other gear you have access to and your personal preference on which stats are how important. I for instance, completely disregard the converve MP stat (I feel it's too small and, more importantly, too inconsistent, to try to increase), but I know a lot of very respected players like it.

If someone ever gets this Robe, regardless of job, I think they are cheating themselves if they don't at least test it out a bit themselves and blindly listen to some forum advice.

    Re: Elemental Magic Help

Does somebody want to crunch the numbers on Conserve MP+2? It's a 2% activation increase iirc. You'd probably end up with more MP just from the Auto Refresh if you wore Morrigan's (when you weren't casting Stoneskin, etc.).

It's 4am so I may have counted wrong, but you could wear Druid's+Morrigan's instead of Weskit+Mahatma's and end up with the same Ele. skill and ahead on damage + Auto Refresh I think?
