Hmm... I don't see your point.

People playing Ballista has always been a minority. It's a mini-game, not another chance to grind for another trophy item or a merit. This means people who do Ballista will likely enjoy it and do it for the sake of enjoying it.

Minorities and Majorities means nothing. Salvage is a deep minority compared to those dozens of linkshells doing Dynamis and maybe barely scratching into glacier. Hell, threads like soloing Salvage or duoing ENMs that SE designed to be won with 12... those are all minorities. BG forum itself is the minority. Let's not bring popularity into this.

And finally, there is more than 13 people on your server having fun with Ballista. Not right now, but there is. I wouldn't say it's above 200. Even then, I can't tell how much the rush to Fenrir's matches have changed the environment. I can say that my server which is one of the top 2 or 3 smallest, has 20+ member matches everytime cap 60 falls into 12-6am EST hours. It's a minority, but not especially tiny.

Meanwhile, on MMOs like WoW, nearly everyone participates in the PvP.
You mean a game where PvP isn't just a mini-game vs a game where it is a min-game? Interesting comparison!

I like the FFXI battle system. I want to and do play the FFXI system in PvP situations. You suggest that I would have even more fun with the FFXI battle system by playing a game that doesn't have the FFXI battle system?

So if I spend over an hour of my time, what do I get? Some piddly EXP, points to use for temporary items in ballista, and if I'm lucky (or just the only person of a certain job that plays ballista) a medal with a title. But if I won the Olympiad in Lineage II, I'd get exclusive abilities, equipment, weapons, items I couldn't find anywhere else, a chat channel reserved for myself, and a glow around my character.
I know it's terrible right? Doing stuff only for fun.

If only Ballista was flooded with people who didn't really want to be there so they can not give a shit for a Ridil like item. The matches would be even more enjoyable to people currently doing it. Oh, maybe they should even allow you skill up so we can have level 30 WHMs spam protect on each other and PLDs with polearms.

I'm not seeing where your "I don't like Ballista so no one else does" argument has evolved into something solid.

I'd derail this thread even further but you're not even arguing the same thing you were when you started. Ballista is neither entertaining (to 99% of people) nor rewarding (to anyone). End of discussion, thanks for playing.

But it is rewarding! You can teleport to Jeuno with 50 ballista points!

Most people don't play ballista because they don't find it fun, they don't play it because they don't like PVP in general. If they did, most of them would be playing WoW.

Right, derailing is bad, but you don't have to make up a reason that isn't true in order to stop. Thanks for playing too!

Hey faggot, maybe if you could stick to your point instead of bargaining with every point I make you'd be worth arguing with, but as it is, you're just some annoying little cheesedick with his panties in a bunch about something I said.

    PRIRIAN GETTIN' ANGRY YO

You said PvP wasn't fun to anyone and I said it was to a group of people, I'm pretty sure that I did not lose sight of this as this little encounter continued. Or, did you want me to not reply to your counterargument at all and just repeat that first statement a few times? That would be interesting, then you could accuse me of me not being able to counter your argument.

Oh nice, so we are getting a world event?
if you think ballista is entertaining, you seriously need to take a break from FFXI and go play something else with actual PvP.

I'm not even going to touch "rewarding", a fucking title is not a reward
Last time I played ballista, it was Bastok VS Sandy

All i remember was they gang raped one of our team mates, they began scoring, we fought them but they ran. And ran they did for over 50 minutes all around the level since we had petras and they didnt.

Anyways, if Ballista offered items like WoW's PvP system, maybe there'd be some incentive for playing. Entertaining? when you find players willing to 1 v 1, or get a good fight going, it can be entertaining. Do i find it fun? No, only because after playing WoW's pvp system for so long, FFXI's lacks severely. But then again, this game wants you to play as a team.

There, you've implied that Ballista is both entertaining and rewarding. But oh shit wait

People playing Ballista has always been a minority. It's a mini-game, not another chance to grind for another trophy item or a merit. This means people who do Ballista will likely enjoy it and do it for the sake of enjoying it.
(Ballista is only enjoyable to a very small group of people)

    (Ballista has no reward)

Oh gee I wonder where you abandoned your original argument and started going with this?

You'd have a point if it weren't such an overwhelming minority that played Ballista.

I'm not arguing with you because I'm not going to argue against my own points like a fucking dog chasing its own tail. How about you read what you wrote instead of putting shit like "you said PvP wasn't fun to anyone" into my mouth?

Re: Time mage in JP mag?

There, you've implied that Ballista is both entertaining and rewarding.
To be perfectly honest I'm focusing on the entertaining portion, because to me being entertained is rewarding, it's a reward. However, I can understand how they can be considered different, I guess I ought to be my careful in my satirical comments! I'm sorry for any confusion that may have caused.

(Ballista is only enjoyable to a very small group of people)
I never implied that it was liked by everyone, just that it was liked. So naturally I would point this out when you mention popularity as a point against my argument.

Mind you, I make it clear that while Ballista is a minority it isn't an overwhelming minority and that an event being done only by the minority does not change or effect whether is should be considered fun. This you have yet to address.

    (Ballista has no reward)
I'll have to apologize again. Like I said above usually entertaining and rewarding mean the same thing to me. You do something in FFXI, you usually have a reason to do it. You can camp a NM which is usually pretty boring, but the reward is that you get an item(or chance at an item). You can also do something like a quest with a bunch of pretty cutscenes, but not much of an item reward, however you may have found the quest entertaining.

Let it be assumed I meant any type of reward, not just items.

"you said PvP wasn't fun to anyone"
Perhaps not exactly, but you get very close to saying it, apparently comparing it to sticking dicks into blenders.

I wouldn't call that a world event. First off, it was just a holiday event, and second, it didn't really change anything, it just activated a NPC.

lol... OP warp is the best thing they coupld have added.... image FFXI w/o it..... that event changed the game a WHOLE lot......

Andother world event would be kinda cool... but it would need to give good gear and useful things, since thats what most people apparently want >.>

Patch 1.9 saw the first true world event in the World of Warcraft. Located in the mysterious insect-infested, quasi-Egyptian themed area of Silithus, Ahn'Qiraj was the capital city of the powerful Qiraji, a race of magical creatures under the thrall of an ancient and terrible Old God who was chained beneath the earth in ages past. A coalition of Night Elves and dragons of the Four Flights fought a war against the Qiraji and their Silithid minions and sealed them behind the Scarab Wall. However, after many centuries the bonds of their prison began to break and Silithus was overrun by the creatures once more. A call for War against Ahn'Qiraj went out and the combined might of the Alliance and Horde sealed away the menace of the Old God for good.

The world event was triggered by a twofold action. First, the entire server population was able to take part in the Ahn'Qiraj War Effort. Players of every level could turn in various items in both Ironforge and Orgrimmar for their faction's respective war preparations. Metals, herbs, textiles, and other commodities were all collected in great quantities. For example, one collector in Ironforge required players to turn in a stack of 20 runecloth bandages at a time. The total number of runecloth bandages required numbered in the tens of thousands. The faster materials were turned in, the faster the War would commence. In the weeks leading up to the opening of the gates many servers were neck-and-neck as Blizzard provided a rankings page to monitor the progress of each realm. In the end the realm Medivh succeeded in being the first to open the gates of Ahn'Qiraj.

At the same time the War Effort was taking in supplies, high level players could engage in a quest chain that spanned the entire world to piece together an artifact called the Scepter of the Shifting Sands. This item would be necessary to ring the Scarab Gong and break the seals holding the Scarab Wall closed. When the War Effort was completed the armies of the Alliance and Horde would march to Ahn'Qiraj. In a spectacular set-piece the armies formed ranks outside the Scarab Wall and the gong was sounded by one lucky person per server. The gates opened and the minions of the Qiraji spilled out in a titanic melee. Additionally, invasions of Silithid insects occurred in almost every populated area of Azeroth.

With the initial event completed the gates were open to everyone on a given server and players were able to access two new raid dungeons: the 20-man ruins zone and the 40-man temple zone and a few new quests.
    this is a world event

Kill the sparkly trees and we'll upgrade travel to roughly that of most other MMOs!

Note: Sparkly tree-killing not actually required.
    this is not

So the reason it's not a world event is because it was a crappy world event? Would you like some cavier while we split some hairs, my good man?

lol comparing FFXI to WoW... again.......

"Sparkly Tree" event was a world event that almost the whole server participated in.... and i here it was actually fun.....

Like i said... WoW got a spiffy new Instance.. thats why YOU like it... YOU got nothing from OP warp (apparently)... but theres no point in arguing over this...

FFXI is in need of a World event that gives something useful as i said in the post you quoted but apparently overlooked >.>

The tree-killing actually was required. A couple servers came really close to not having OP warps ever, but SE extended the deadline and they were able to finish it just in time. If they were much later, Fairy and Midgardsormr would be the only two servers without OPs today.

Unless you can think of a server that never killed their trees, even after the deadline extension.
