Can ping yahoo.com but cannot surt internet

yeah sorry for asking this question but i found this weird prob. thanks for the help.

got 3 pcs in the house

i setup the router with the wireless wpa key (unchecked block anonymous too), on wired desktop. work fine, can get on internet

then i setup my vista laptop, set wpa, got connected on wireless, can go internet

then on my 3rd winXP desktop, i tried to connect wireless, using wpa key, i got connected, can ping yahoo.com (receive/sent = 4) but when i tried to get online, i can't surf the internet (all websites). i have done all the things in internet options (never dial connection and unchecked all options in lan settings). disabled window firewall, even set tcpip dns 4.2.2.2, still not working.

my friend said it is not browser prob. its something about setting up home network idk, cos i dont think the browser is corrupted neither i need the windows update. it worked fine before tho.

if anyone can help me in this problem, i really appreciate it, thanks~

whats your ip on that box? make sure you dont have a proxy set up in internet options / connection tab / LAN Settings

if you have access on the other 2 pcs then the DCHP settings should be fine, make sure you have a good connection to your wireless... you are connected to the internet if you can ping yahoo.com, if you cant surf then it's a browser problem... try using a superior browser (http://www.firefox.com (no snowknight ie is NOT superior getover it)) and see if that works for you, you may have to download it on on another pc to get it on that desktop, also try pinging another box on your network, or your wireless gateway, but if you can reach yahoo, you're online for sure

Could also indicate browser-related issues if your able to ping but cannot get online. Clear cache/cookies, reset IE defaults, the usual shit.

try going to run->cmd and trying these commands

"ipconfig /flushdns"
"netsh winsock reset"
restart your computer

none of those are gonna help anything, he has a browser issue, he can ping, he can probably tracert, nslookup, and all that his stack is fine and his dns is fine if can ping a domain... no need for that stuff really

As silly and as far-fetched as this is.... your not trying to go through a bad proxy through your browser are you?
I know when I got banned from KillingIfrit I had to use a proxy and it went down and I could connect to all my shit but couldn't browse the web because the proxy i was forcing the browser to go through was down.

make sure your work offline option under the tools toolbar isn't checked. that will keep you from surfing the web.

thanks guys for the info. apparently something wrong with the dns server on the IE actually. well yeah i have tried to type the ip number of yahoo in the address box (like 66.x.x.x at IE and its still not working). ill try download later other browser. ooh about that working offline, thats the first thing i will realize about it but still thanks for the advice.

i set dns server because thats what i read in other forum, set it to 4.2.2.2 ( or .1 or .3) can fix the dns problem. since im kinda new here, i dont really know what is the reason actually.

If you're typing an IP address into the address bar and its still not loading, its not a DNS problem.

And the reason for 4.2.2.2 is that thats the DNS of Level 3, pretty much the largest backbone of any ISP globally, so you could assume that their DNS server won't be down/faulty.
