    Insurance Companies (not medical)

Has anyone had any experience with Amica as an insuranec company (home, auto, etc)? They got the highest J.D. Power rating of any other provider in practically every category, but a quick google search turns up some very unhappy people.

Anyone have personal experience? The rates they quoted me were practically half of what I got from State Farm and Farmers.

heard amica is one of the best, although USAA i heard is undisputed best (especially customer service, but also competitiveness) but there are military requirements (military, retired, family of military, or grandfathered in). Both I hear are very competitive which is why you probably are getting such great quotes. Call them and ask for an explanation, that should allay most of your concerns.

edit: i have no personal experience, sorry. just what i heard through the grapevine...

I have USAA auto insurance and a credit card through them, they are fantastic and most likely i'll use them for pretty much anything I need once I start doing more like home etc...

Never heard of Amica, but if you can possibly get USAA, you should do it.

Yea I knew about USAA but didn't mention them since I'm not eligible. My wife was hit by someone with USAA coverage once and I have to say it was an excellent experience. I called them one time ever, talked for about 5 minutes, and they arranged a rental car, made arrangements with a mechanic to fix our car, came and picked up the car, and delivered it when it was done. I basically did nothing and everything was handled, was really nice lol.

I've also heard the same things you've heard about Amica, I just find it odd that the reviews are so awful on some of the links I gave. I know that you can't please everyone, so I'm sort of leaning towards those being the exceptions rather than the rule, but hoping to get more personal accounts. I guess it's possible that the reason my quotes were so low is because my credit score is like 805, supposedly they offer lower rates for people with higher credit scores.

    i sent you a pm.

I wouldn't take much stock in complaints online, type in any company and you will find whiners. I think most of those people are the unreasonable types you experience in this world.

I personally use 21st Century, and am going through with a claim w/them right now (someone hit my parked car) and they are fine. I stick with them out of complacency (I had them originally through my father) but they have been pretty good for me. I think who is your agent is matters a lot.

The thing with Amica is that it appears there are no "agents". There's one office in my city (Houston), but the phone number listed on the website just puts you through to some global switchboard where they ask you what your city is, and don't transfer you to another agent. So you end up doing everything through the person who doesn't know what your city is, which leads me to believe there is a central office somewhere in the US, and it doesn't follow the traditional "agent" model.

I've been with State Farm for almost 10 years, so I feel bad leaving them because I have a great agent, but at the same time Amica quoted me a 35% discount on my Auto insurance, and a 60% discount on homeowner's policy, which is pretty damn amazing.

So USAA is definitely worth it?

Hmmm.... My father is a usaa member, have one of their prepaid card thingies. I might have to check it, first I've heard of USAA being amazing.

Every company has it's people who received bad customer service or had a bad experience otherwise, you could just as easily find someone who got the shaft from that insurance company just as well as the next. I'd overall choose rates/24 hour customer service... any company's customer service has to be tested once you're already a customer, just because 1 person says <insert company here> sucks, doesn't mean another person also hates another company as well.

Let me tell you something about Consumer Ratings and Insurance companies.

I have worked for insurance companies for 4 years now. Every time rates go up, customers grow extremely agitated. They piss and moan because their premiums increase (all insurance companies aren't evil because they increase their rates, if you're really interested I can explain to you why)

AIG, Metlife, Unicare, and Jackson National are pretty good companies from my experience, you can look in to them if you want.

Yea, I think those are all strictly health insurance though unless I'm mistaken. I was more interested in auto/homeowners. But yea, higher premium isn't always evil, in a lot of cases you actually get a broader range of coverage. I know State Farm has much broader coverage than other insurance companies for the same monetary amount.

    AIG does Auto.

State Farm and American Family are OK if you can find an intelligent agent. Most of the time it depends on the agent, there are a lot of really stupid ones out there. Actually, if you live in IL or around Chicago I can recommend some good ones to you.

Texas unfortunately For now I'm gonna go with Amica. It's so much cheaper than my State Farm and even my State Farm agent told me that Amica was admittedly really good. If they end up sucking I'll probably just switch back to StateFarm, even though it's so much more expensive I've been with the same agent for like 12 years, and he's a family friend too lol.

USAA is amazing. I've been a member for 13 years and will be one until I die. I've been in a few car accidents, nothing serious and never my fault, and USAA always made it such a hassle-free experience. My auto insurance premium is $206, w/ collision. I invest monthly into their Precious Metals Mutual Fund too. The customer service is outstanding.
