Is the reason you can't get it because of lack of funds or you just can't find it? It's rather easy to find (suprisingly) in bama?

What's the difference between bourbon and whiskey? I honestly don't know.
in addition to what daydreamer posted, one of the key differences is the barrels that they are made in. bourbon is made in barrels that are "cleaned" out whiskey barrels. by cleaned out i mean that what they do is blast it with a flame. what happens, since whiskey barrels are typically wood, the inside gets slightly burnt in the process and that has an effect on the taste.

Can't find it. I've got the means, just can't find a bottle. Not at any of the liquor stores or anything around here and I don't want to order it online in case it breaks or something stupid like that. Here's my current collection of unopened/mostly full bottles.

My gems are my Patron Platinum, Green Label, bottle of Courvoisier VSOP, and two bottles of reserve Pinot Noir Brut Chandon sitting in my fridge. Oh, I also have one of every flavor of the 750ml Absolut for fun and a bottle of their 100 proof vodka; in case you were wondering, my favorite is peach, but raspberry is a close second.

If you really want, and for some reason would trust me. I can get you the bottle rather easily, but yeah...it would have to be shipped.

Also, if you have all those flavors of Absolut you need to invest in a bottle of Cointreau to compliment them. After trying it once I refused to use triple sec for pretty much anything. You should try a REAL cosmo. Honestly, a well made real cosmo is pretty damn good and an actual good balance of flavors and not the overly sweet syrupy things you get in bars.
1.5 oz Absolut Citron/.5 oz Cointreau/.25z FRESH lime (can't stress FRESH enough)/.5 oz Cranberry juice for color.
Shake with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, garnish with a flamed orange peel.

This may not be the original recipe, but it IS the one that popularized the drink back in the days when Dale DeGroff worked at the rainbow room in NYC and served one to Madonna. The media took over the drink after that...

    Re: whats your fav whiskey?

I do have a bottle of Cointreau.. That pic is just my common shelf stuff that is used in a lot of drinks and frankly, the stuff I don't mind giving out to people I hardly know. I have a top shelf for my good stuff (Green Label, Patron, etc.) and a side shelf for my mixers (Cointreau, Triple Sec, Chambord, etc.) and glasses/etc. And hey, if I don't get the bottle of Blue Label soon enough I may actually employ your services :D. The only question I ask is if there is a special shipping method for a bottle like that..

EDIT: As for that cosmo recipe, I'll give it a shot. One of my hobbies is actually mixing new drinks.. I like to experiment a lot with different flavors/alcohols and mixers. I have a few drinks I made that some of my friends swear is better than anything you can order at a bar. Let me know if you want one or two.

I know just how you feel. I spend like all my money on booze, but not in an alcoholic way. Most of my friends only order beer now when they go to bars because the drinks they make "just don't compare." It's funny though, a few days ago I had a guy come up to me and stared and then said "is your name Kevin?" I said "yes" and he replied "I hear you make really good drinks." Seriously, wtf?? I felt flattered at least. I am a true believer in the classics and balance. Very rarely do I actually like anything that a bartender invents because it's usually "I can make this drink that tastes like *insert random candy item here*." Not "I can make a drink where you actually taste the alcohol, in a good way, and it's not to sweet, not to sour, not to strong, not so weak." If a bartender ever told me that I would try whatever the hell he wanted to serve me, but very rarely does that happen. If some of the drinks you mix happen to fall into this category then by all means post the recipe. I am always in the mood for new flavors. One of my favorite new drinks involves licor 43 from Spain and fresh muddled rosemary (works suprisingly well).

If you really are interested in making drinks, especially real drinks and not the overly sweetened drinks in bars that are amateur at best then check out http://www.drinkboy.com . The guy who runs this is one of the leading authorities on drinks now and days. His articles are great and he really knows what he is doing. He started me on my path.

    Re: whats your fav whiskey?

OK, I see your style. I'll post a real drinker's drink recipe then:

    Flaming Cider

Ingredients: Bacardi 151, Goldschlager, Chambord, Apple Cider.

To prepare you're going to want to mix 1oz of Goldschlager and 1oz Chambord into a small container. Throw it into the freezer and cool it to around 50 degrees F. Get approx. 4 oz of apple cider heated to around 150 degrees F (slightly less than your average cup of coffee). Make sure the cider is in an appropriately sized container for about 6 oz of liquid (any standard glass; I use tea cups). Add 2 oz of Bacardi 151 to the cider. Stir. Take the Goldschlager/Chambord mix out of the freezer and mix it slowly in with the apple cider. Enjoy!

This is a seasonal drink, but still one of my favorites. I do also make the fruity/tasty drinks you seem to abhor, so I'll leave those recipes for a different thread a at a different time. If you like this recipe let me know and I'll throw you another classic. Oh, and I don't think I need to mention it but I will... I used ounces as my measure of how much, not shots. 1 oz =/= 1 shot. I'm sure you knew that though.

EDIT: I just realized that drink is horrible for you to try at the peak of summer. Heres a more seasonal drink:

    GT

Ingredients: Mango Rum, Passion Fruit Rum, Blue Curacao, and Mango Snapple.

Mix 1.5 oz mango rum, 1.5 oz passion fruit rum, .5 oz Blue Curacao, and 3 oz mango snapple over ice. Enjoy!

Keno, I must say that when I first read the first recipe I thought to myself "you have no idea what you are doing," HOWEVER after reading that you have an actual preperation for the drink I will most likely try it and enjoy it. Honestly, I usually scoff at any drink that involves 151, but it does have a place if used well.

This second drink you mentioned seems like it a winner, however I think if you added about half an ounce of fresh lime it would be freaking golden. Now I just need to figure out where I can actually buy passion rum in Alabama.

Btw sorry if I sound a bit like an ass right now. I have had 3 woodword reserve manhattans now that I FINALLY went out and bought a bottle. Damn they are good...

I didn't mean to make it seem earlier like I abhor fruity drinks, but I do respect them if they have a good balance (that is what I am all about). My favorite drinks include: Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, Sidecars, Mojitos (fresh mint and lime please), Margartias (fresh lime, good tequila, and cointreau ONLY, no freaking blender...), and many other drinks depending on my mood. I have really grown to love a good bourbon though, so Manhattans are always on the top of my list. The problem is the drink NEEDS bitters to be great, and most bartenders don't even know what bitters are.

Maybe we should make a new thread about good cocktails, and not derail this one?

Oh and in response to your earlier thing about shipping. I have no idea if they have special shipments for shipping booze. If I were to ship you some blue label (which is probably illegal to do in bama) I would ship it in it's box, which gives some protetion, and pad it up with a lot of plastic bags or something and mark it as fragile. It probably wouldn't be a problem. Honestly though, if you find a decent liquor store around your area that doesn't have it they will probably be more than happy to order for you. I have found that when I drive out of state to buy alcohol (it is hard to get a a lot of things in bama) that most places love to order stuff if you just ask!

    Re: whats your fav whiskey?

lol this is kinda funny since I work in a liquor store. I'm constantly staring at our bottle of Macallan 30yr and wondering what kind of person can afford to drop $600 on a bottle of scotch. we have blue label, in the 14 months or so that i've been working there I've seen us sell a bottle maybe...once or twice. higher end wines have bigger appeal to me than high end liquors anyway. this new year I got to try some incredible 1996 burgandys that were simply out of this world. I could never see myself dropping $250 on a bottle of wine, but it was nice to experience it on someone else's dime

but for my whiskey drinking. when I'm slumming and buy en mass for the home its canadian club all the way. standard issue consumption its all about jack daniels, smooth enough to drink on its own on the rocks (as i typically do) but i wont pitch a fit about putting a little cola in it as well. had a phase where I was drinking a lot of bulleit bourbon straight on the rocks at home, next time i restock the liquor cabinet I'm thinking of trying bookers.

Wines are great. I love them. However my beef with them is the cost. If you think about it they cost SOOOOO much more than liquor. The average bottle of red wine I buy (I am a petit-syrah guy) is about 20$. This equates to about 4 glasses, or four drinks. An average "fifth" of of alcohol is roughly 25 ounces, which equates to anywhere from 12-25 drinks depending on what you make. MUCH more cost effective. ALSO, if I buy an amazing bottle of wine for 250$ I have to use it in about 3 days or else it goes bad. Whereas I can buy a bottle of blue label and keep it for years and years. Maybe only having a drink on my birthday once a year and knowing it will taste exactly the same every time.

Back to the cost thing. If I buy a bottle of Hennessy XO (which I REALLY wish I could afford) it would be about 12.5$ a drink for me. Because I always drink my good cognac neat, in a snifter, with 2 ounces. If I bought a 150$ bottle of wine I would be paying about 37.5$ per a drink. 3x as much! I think I am with you on this one. If it is someone elses dime I will defeinitely try and more than likely enjoy, but it's too rich for my blood any other way.

Most people who like JD like the other two more because well, they are the same hting but more refined. I personally think Gentleman Jack is a little too sweet for my tastes, but one of my friends who I trust with making me a drink loves the stuff. And I also have many a friend who love the single barrel.

Pretty much, if you like regular Jack, you really can't go wrong with upgrading
