Yes, there are ten bowl eligible teams. Here's the non-conference schedule for the 5th through 10th place teams in the Big 10 (all bowl eligible).

Indiana: Indiana St, W. Michigan, Akron, Ball St
Iowa: N. Illinois, Syracuse, Iowa St, W. Michigan
Michigan St: UAB, Bowling Green, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame
Northwestern: Northeastern, Nevada, Duke, E. Michigan
Penn St: Florida International, Notre Dame, Buffalo, Temple
Purdue: Toledo, E. Illinois, C. Michigan, Notre Dame

There's not a decent game in the bunch. There is are two teams with a winning record in the that list (MAC teams Bowling Green & C.Michigan) and one BCS team (4-6 Pittsburgh). Those teams need to win those four games, beat Minnesota (0-8 Big Ten), you beat one of the other crappy mediocre bowl teams from the list of 6 above, and you're bowl eligible. None of the six teams listed above have a winning conference record, yet all are bowl eligible.

Nobody in the conference beat another BCS school with a winning record; Ohio State beat Washington; Wisconsin beat Washington State; Illinois beat Syracuse; those and MSU's win over Pitt are the conference's only wins over other BCS schools. The conference's most impressive non-conference showing was Illinois' almost beating Missouri on a neutral field.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Purdue fan, so I generally like the Big 10. But the conference has shown nothing this year, and citing the number of bowl eligible teams is a laughable argument, when there are maybe four good or better teams (most of whom scheduled crappy non-conference teams as well).

Okay... so the Big Ten is mediocre and has a lot of parity... and?

Given that Kansas and Hawaii are the only two undefeated teams with a few games to go, mediocrity seems to be the theme of this year.

Bill Snyder and Frank Beamer built programs out of nothing by scheduling cupcakes every year. Unless you are competing for a National Title, there is almost no benefit to schedule tough non-conference games. The system doesn't reward you enough for playing a tough schedule in terms of getting in a lower tier bowl game. If they would have BCS standings that go 1-50 (or however many bowl teams there are this year), and a non-biased bowl committee picked the top 50 teams (similar to how they use RPI for basketball) heavily weighted on the expanded BCS standings, there would be more of a reason to schedule tougher non conference games. The fact is that a team could play 4 ranked teams in the non conference, go 5-6, have maybe 2-3 wins over a ranked team and another team could go 6-5, play 4 cupcakes, and not beat a ranked team. The 6-5 team will make a bowl even though the 5-6 team would likely be better.

Be the 1-loss team with the hardest schedule.

Even if Ohio State loaded up on out-of-conference quality wins 3 months ago, you think they'd be in the top 2 this year? I doubt it.
