I can't remember that game ever being good!
By saying that you mean secret of mana also?Originally Posted by Vinen

SoE wasn't that great and it was kinda annoying but I really loved Secret of Mana.
I can't wait till they release SoM on the virtual console if they ever plan to![]()
Just because a game uses the same engine doesn't mean the storyline is of the same quality.Originally Posted by Insanelol

SoM wins~
The only thing SoE had going for it was Toaster Dog.
secret of mana wanttttt
I wanted to like Evermore, but it was sort of grating and too linear for me. I will say that it had some of the best quotes though.
"Hey! Look! A mummy... a chainsaw... and a balloon animal!"
All the weapons had really small hitboxes and took too long to recharge. The only way to not get hit by every mob was to throw a spear and oneshot it first.
Also, Wikipedia says:
There is common misconception that Secret of Evermore is, or was released in lieu of, a follow-up to Secret of Mana. The reality is that Secret of Evermore did not have any effect on any translations of Square's Japanese titles. The decision of its parent company, Square Co., Ltd., to add a new development team to its existing Squaresoft office in Redmond had absolutely no effect on any such translations and did not tie up any of the people involved in translation. It was the parent company's decision not to continue translating titles, including the sequel to Secret of Mana (which was released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 3). Furthermore, Secret of Evermore was not made instead of any new titles in any existing series: Its team was specifically hired to create it and they would not have been assembled otherwise.
...
The "Secret of" prefix was tacked on shortly prior to the game's release. Until then, it was known simply as "Evermore." It was rumored that Jeremy Soule had written the word on a whiteboard and the team took a liking to it and eventually made "Evermore" the game's name. It was the marketing department's suggestion that the title be tweaked, perhaps to take advantage of those hoping that it was the sequel to Secret of Mana.
I liked it better then Secret of Mana, probably one of few.
If the alchemy system wasn't so fucking gay I'd probably agree.Originally Posted by Araxius

Spamming alchemy was kinda fun until you had to farm ingredients or cash to replace all the stuff you used up. I always just used crush through the whole game instead of trying to skill up another spell/recipe/whatever.
Better yet was do one crush, then spam 5 flashes on that fist and it always did 999dmgOriginally Posted by Charla
SoE = Shitty SoM clone.
It never ceases to amaze me when a dumbass posts like this. Just because the game engine was a lot like SoM doesn't mean it was a clone much less said clone being made by Square USA.Originally Posted by MisterBob
SoE was an amazing game and the main character was funny as hell with the constant B Movie refrences to things he did throughout his adventure. The Alchemy system was fun and enjoyable as well seeing as getting materials unlike SoM made you choose and pick which spells/skills you wanted to work on early in the game.
The Dog alone was made of awesome seeing as it changed how it looked depending on the enviroment you were in *lol at the Toaster Model* and of course it was fun being able to set and control how much you wanted the dog to do in terms of fighting mobs.
The Music Score as well was enjoyable with a fully produced original set in Square USA's offices by a very talented group of people. They made each piece fit well into the zones and places you explored & you always went around feeling a sense of suspense when you faced off various boss monsters and creatures.
Wish I could Screencap one of the better scenes in the Arena with your character fighting some famous gladatior and them announcing the guy as a legendary hero and then saying "Vs some kid with a stick" had me rolling.
SoE was a very enjoyable game in a ninch where everyone was just starting to get turned onto Japanese game companies and software. Next time you make a stupidass comment like that at least play the damn game outside of 4 hours or more of however much fail you tried to put into it.

And I won't lie I did shed a tear at the ending it was so sad but yet satisfied.
I rented Secret of Evermore twice and played it on an emulator after that. Only beat it once though.
If you try working on the assumption that it's a sequal to Secret of Mana, then it doesn't really compare. Treating it as a different game, most of what EssEnnKay said was accurate. Choosing which alchemy you wanted to use early doesn't really work so well when you don't even get most of the combinations until most of the way through the game. And I still didn't appreciate the hit detection and weapon skilling issues, as I mentioned earlier.
Did anyone here play Seiken Densetsu 3? I liked some aspects of it better than Secret of Mana, but the graphics and controls always felt a bit unfinished or something. And the right combination of characters makes an enormous difference in the difficulty (Grappler, Ninja, Spear-girl for a pitifully easy run).
