Subtle humor like Terry Pratchet's Discworld series? If so, then that's awesome.Originally Posted by finale23
sorry never read discworld lol, but i did read "good omen" by terry pratchet and neil gaiman, the humor's really subtle and comes in small doses. in comparison, jokes in stardust are pretty conspicuous and less elaborate. i am a neil gaiman fan so i am probably a bit biased.Originally Posted by Huggo
people always say book is better, but i rarely see the case where i feel the book is better, you're entitled to your opinion, but some things are better visualized, and you can't always do that with a book.Originally Posted by finale23

First off the writing in the beginning is just terrible. He writes paragraphs that shouldn't be paragraphs. Let me see if I can find one.
Here:
" The village school was a fine school, and under the tutelage of Mrs. Cherry, the schoolmistress, Tristran Thorn learned all about fractions, and longitude and latitude: he could ask in French for the pen of the gardener's aunt, indeed for the pen of his own aunt; he learned the kings and queens of England from William the Conqueror, 1066, to Victoria, 1837. He learned is reading and had a fair copperplate hand. Travelers to the village were rare, but occasionally a peddler would come through the village, selling "penny dreadful" accounts of grisly murders, fateful encounters, dire doings and remarkable escapes. Most peddlers sold song sheets, two for a penny, and families would buy them and gather about their pianos to sing songs such as "Cherry Ripe" and "In My Father's Garden."
Ok first of all lets just take a look at the insanely run-on sentence at the start. Some of those comas should have definitely have been periods and huts my brain just looking at it. Then he has TWO topics going on in that paragraph. Wtf does the peddlers have to do with his teachings at school? Even third graders would know that's two paragraphs and this is supposed to be good?
His editor should be shot first of all as this wasn't the only case in the book.
As to the story itself: The characters are extremely flat. There is no love development for tristran and the star. It's strictly "I cant stand you" to "I love you" without any previous thoughts to them growing to like each other. The witch just leaving is lame. Tristran's mother's personality is akward. The ending didn't make me feel sad, made me glad it was over.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I'll only ever consider this just shitty shitty writing.
you're entitled to not like something, but firstly not getting the whole feeling of the thing doesn't help. It's supposed to be a run on sentence, like someone thinking of a load of stuff all at once. As for the story it's slightly based on old fairy stories where people would just turn around and like each other for no good reason - and it's even explained. It's a style and I think Gaiman is really awesome.
You can't really say a book is crap because you dislike the sentence structure and miss the point. Although I guess it's not nice to miss the point either.
I saw Stardust, and I didn't think it had anyhwere near the amount of wit and charm as The Princess Bride. It was certainly watchable, but I left the theater feeling a little disappointed after reading about all of those comparisons between this movie and The Princess Bride in various reviews.
I think the LOTR trilogy may have elevated my expectations for fantasy movies to unrealistic levels, sadly.
lotr? if you say so, didnt care much for the lotr movies and i liked this better than princess bride :/

I'm entitled to my opinion just as much as you, and just 'cause I find it a poor choice doesn't mean I don't get the point.
