Far be it from me to say standing at 10.5, 7.5, 6.5, or what have you is hard, hell even just eyeballing it is incredibly easy. This part I adamantly refuse is skill, because almost anybody can remember where to stand after taking at most 1-2 mobs to figure out either how many steps you take or using the radar like most rngs do that don't use windower (didn't know there were many end-gamers on pc who don't) it's not hard in the very least and you can still get the optimal distance. With the patch a while back to 'un-nerf' rng they have rather drastically widened the optimal distance, so it's even easier without knowing proper numbers to get into it and keep in it. This may be more difficult for roaming parties sure, but really, not many parties I know of do that anymore, especially when a good bard can sleep 2 or so mobs at camp and have them lined up without anybody needing to move and the healer can stay resting w/o needing to move. But I guess older tactics work when there is no bard to be found or what have you.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on this though, what's hard for one person can be very easy for another, the main problem that I've found distance does it just makes people too lazy or not caring enough and they plink away very slowly and at w/e distance they want and thus give us a worser name, this I don't mind really. In all honesty though, I don't invite many rngs unless I know them for this very thing, same for blus really. It requires no skill imo for rng, blu yes to some degree it does to know what to use yada yada yada but here's the deal-breaker: it requires common sense, and a working brain. If it involves a need for common sense and I can avoid that, by all means I will because it's one less variable I have to worry about my party members being crappy. I've gone through the long phase of inviting as many rngs and such as I can, but after a non-stop bout of crappy players (15+ rng, 11blu, and about 10thf) I've all but sworn off inviting random people on jobs that require any common sense or working sensory organs.
I'm not entirely against reduced enmity and subtle blow, but I don't think that solely will fix ranger. But this here, this is where it's up to our views, our shells and what activities we do. Personally with my shell and my end-game activities, much is zerged, so reduced enmity, and tp generation is *far* from my/shells list of worries since just having a rng among several other melee (who feed massive amounts of TP) with reduced enmity/tp generation on the mob will pale in the comparison to said rng being able to hit harder and more properly like a rng should. But again, if kills are long for your shell and how you do things, then the enmity/tpgen you suggested would be great, but my shell doesn't do this and if you have the skill/gear/people to do it, it's far more efficient to burn things imo, and much easier. Yet again though, this is strictly opinion, and experience of what you have. If I were in a shell that did things the long and hard way then your idea would benefit me, and in exp/merits mobs die so fast enmity is hardly an issue, doing a 2k slugwinder consistently unless there is such a decrease to rng's enmity build up as to not pull hate, after doing 225+ per shot, and 1500+ barrage, or just the 2k WS by itself would be so heinously broken it would be fixed as soon as people can abuse it like no other. Let me illustrate my point: One Ninja, One Red Mage, 3 Rangers, 1 Bard would be a very broken setup if you can nearly guarantee that the nin can keep hate from the very low hate rngs, and the brds could freely buff the rngs even further and they still would take little hate. This is the kind of thing I find highly unlikely since enmity is just a part of damage, and personally I'd rather see a fix to damage than seeing my hits being totally ignored for no reason. Ninja has a reason to have subtle blow, it fits the job, monk does too in a way though not as much. But ranger is just pure unmitigated damage, and that's all it's every been intended to do, doing it with less enmity/subtle blow would be nice, but I don't think that would fix the job.
As I said though, everything is to my personal experiences and reasoning, there's no way I can fully comprehend your own, as it makes little sense to me, being that I've never experienced that of which you have. People seem to constantly forget that their own personal experiences can't be fully relayed to another, and thus because somebody disagrees with them or thinks otherwise, they feel the other person is entirely wrong, but I suppose some people just like to do that. ^_^
