Good music playing device?

What's a good device for playing music? The only thing I own in this type of area is a crappy cd player with shitty anti-skip or something. Anyway I want to get some sort of MP3 player but I don't know what's good.

I want to go with the iPod since it has to be good for some reason, seeing as how it's so popular. But I hear there are alot of problems with it or I have to buy the music I put on it or some crap. I don't know. Anyway, what's good, as I am way too out of touch for this kind of stuff.

iPod is vastly overrated, and overpriced.

I like the later Creative players. Creative Zen Touch was a very good one, but kinda big. And while it handled being dropped down stairs quite a bit, around the 50th time I dropped it, it didn't wanna play anymore. I currently have a Creative Zen V, and I'm very happy with it.

The ipod has a ton of accessories, but I heard the quality of the music is a bit lacking.

I almost went with a zen myself, but decided to go with the Zune. Main turning point was the larger screen for video playback since I plan on using it to watch movies when I travel. Been using it for 6 months now, and really no trouble with it outside of a clumsy interface with the software.

There are "technical" issues on some of the older iPods. I own an older iPod, and the only issues I've had are that it "dies" for a couple minutes and won't seem it turn on. I'm pretty sure Apple eradicated many of the problems, though I couldn't say for sure.

No, you don't have to buy all your music. I typically download my CDs into my library, and you can take songs you've download from Limewire, torrent, Soulseek, w/e and put them in your library.

I thoroughly enjoy my iPod, regardless of the seemingly miniscule bugs I occasionally run into.

I'm not usually a fan of Apple products, but my iPod is probably the best thing I've bought in the last 5 years. There are new generations coming out soon and the prices on the current ones are set to drop. You can acquire your music however you'd like, load it into iTunes and then onto your iPod. You don't have to buy anything. Music quality on mine is fine but I also make sure I download music with a high bitrate.

I had a creative zen V and returned it later that day. It was small, and durable, perfect for what I needed, but the design was a little weird for scrolling through it with my big thumb and it froze on me a few times. The way to add music or create playlists was very primitive, although simple. Pretty much just drag folder to program, and look at the actual folders in the program. I actually prefer Itunes over it and I really am not a fan of itunes since it takes up so much space.

I went back to ipods after playing the creatives and samsungs, nano's are pretty durable and small, they cost 50$ more for the same amount of songs but they have I think around twice the battery life of the creatives which was the most important aspect for me. The 2nd gen Nano's are great, and if they release 3rd gen then it'll be even better. You can't really go wrong with it, you just have to spend a few dollars more, but after playing with a bunch of brands it's worth the extra few dollars.

Zen looks pretty good but I'm looking at it and its like camera? radio? video? >.> I don't really care for that sort of stuff. I guess video is kind of nice but I don't really watch much. Also I really don't care for the "small" design. I don't care if something is big and bulky because I don't care about that sort of stuff. That iPod picture and some of the Zen stuff seems too small. <.<

get a 2nd gen nano, it's slim but tall so it isn't really tiny tiny. The zen was REALLY small, i had the V+ i think, and the click thing to scroll through it was horrid to use. The nano's are also wrapped in aluminum, not plastic, so they hold up decently.

If you buy an iPod, do yourself a favor and pick up some decent headphones. I can't understand for the life of me why Apple would put together such a nice mp3 player and then give you shit headphones to listen with.

As for troubles with iPods, most issues have been hard drive related. The older iPods used physical hard drives which have a tenancy to break, especially if the device is constantly being thrown around in back packs or pockets. The newer iPods use flash drives which are less likely to crash on you.

I agree with the zen statement, I got one 3 years ago, 20gig Zen, brilliant MP3 player and has never failed me.
