    car problems =/

ok. sunday aug. 26th my friend bought a '01 grand prix GTX w/95k miles on it. it passed the '131 point inspection' at http://www.mikecastruccichevrolet.com/. he bought the car 'as-is, no warranty'. he paid $7k cash.

on friday afternoon while driving w/his dad (hes 18. only has his permit) about 1mile from his house. the car starts to putter and dies. idk how it died =/ . he towed it the next day back to the dealership. and today they said a few things.

    a. he signed the slip that said 'as-is. no warranty' on the deal. (he was offered to buy a warranty but was suggested not worth it because the car was in such 'great' condition by the salesman.)

    b. the certified mechanic said that the car ran great before. and that he was most likely racing the car.

after they said that, they told us that the problem was that a rod snaped inside the engine and busted a hole through the side of the block. thus block = scrap.

they said a used engine (his was 3.8 v6 version) would cost approx $4.3k he came back an hour later and droped it to $3.2k. all throughout today it went from 2.8k down to $2.4k. my buddy only has $1.9k in bank. hes willing to give them that but i dont think he should. he bought the car and 5 days later it blew up on him.

tomorrow we going back to see if we can bump it down more. his drivers test is on saturday and i dont think hes going to make it ... while he had the car he was using it to practice for his test in. he was not racing this car at all.

so my question /bg/ . should my buddy have to pay for the engine ?

Buying an old used car 'no warranty' is like flying without a parachute. He's fucked. I can't believe he shelled out 7k for a 16 year old car...Hasn't he ever heard of haggling?

That's what happens when you buy a used car. He signed as-is. That being said I work in a garage and getting a used engine shouldn't cost 2.4k unless that included labor to put it in, and even then that seems a bit high. Price around at private businesses and see how much they quote you, chances are for a job like that they'll be cheaper (Unless you need to get a new PCM and it needs to be flashed, that car is semi-newish so it might). If you want me to I could price you some out tomorrow at work (I'm in PA) but dunno how well the prices would do for you in Ohio >.>

16 year old car? OP says it's an 01...2001 - 2008 (model year just released) = 7 years.

    oops my math sucks...

His only hope is to strike a deal for the new engine to buy it as cheaply as possible. Sadly the dealer still doesn't owe him stink because he signed the 'no warranty' agreement. He should at least have warrantied the power train.

What do you have to protest about? it's his fault for taking it without any warranty.

Sorry dude but your friend's out of luck... best thing to do right now is look around and find the cheapest deal on the engine he needs.

Power train on a used car? They're trying to make money not be your friend. Should bring it to your own mechanic (if you go to one) next time to look it over.

You can buy warrantied used cars. Nowadays dealers slap words like 'certified' on them instead of calling them 'used' because the connotation of 'used' carries too much 'as-is' to sell them to cautious buyers. The last time I bought a used car it came with a warranty and it wasn't terribly expensive.

Also when buying a warranty for a used car you have to read the fine print. Many will only pay $xx amount per hour (The one I looked at was $25) for labor (Average private shop rate is around 45-50. Dealerships you can expect 75-90/hour), they don't pay for diagnostics, and limit how much they'll pay for certain parts. Warranty companies are also like Used car dealerships, they're there to make money.

I know, but it sounds like he didn't buy it from a GM Dealership. OMG I'm dumb, it's a GM what did you expect? (jk ;3)

This should be a lesson to a lot of people, read the fine print before signing anything.

    Re: car problems =/

The car had 96,000 miles on it. Why is it a suprise? Even if it's in perfect working order, rods can sling, especially when it's around 100k or more miles. Hell at the mechanic shop I worked at my boss had one sling while the car was in idle and he was checking something under the hood (it almost hit him in the foot). Saying he was racing it really doesn't mean anything to be honest, it can sling at any time.

Honestly I think both you and your friend are stupid for thinking he deserves anything out of it. It is really no ones fault it broke. Those kind of things just happen. Even if it's in PERFECT working order, older parts can cause rods to sling.

And honestly, if you really do go down there and video protest, it will make you look like more of an ass than him because you and your friends sound like silly little kids who don't know a thing about buying a vehicle.

The company shouldn't owe you shit but try to get an engine for cheaper and maybe look for a local shop to install it, the dealership cost way more to install, just when you bargain with the dealership don't be a pussy about it. lol pontiac. shoulda gone with a honda.

Why does it matter if it's 5 days, 5 months, or 5 years? He didn't get a warranty, it's his damn fault.
