ok. sunday aug. 26th my friend bought a '01 grand prix GTX w/95k miles on it. it passed the '131 point inspection' at http://www.mikecastruccichevrolet.com/. he bought the car 'as-is, no warranty'. he paid $7k cash.
on friday afternoon while driving w/his dad (hes 18. only has his permit) about 1mile from his house. the car starts to putter and dies. idk how it died =/ . he towed it the next day back to the dealership. and today they said a few things.
a. he signed the slip that said 'as-is. no warranty' on the deal. (he was offered to buy a warranty but was suggested not worth it because the car was in such 'great' condition by the salesman.)
b. the certified mechanic said that the car ran great before. and that he was most likely racing the car.
after they said that, they told us that the problem was that a rod snaped inside the engine and busted a hole through the side of the block. thus block = scrap.
they said a used engine (his was 3.8 v6 version) would cost approx $4.3k he came back an hour later and droped it to $3.2k. all throughout today it went from 2.8k down to $2.4k. my buddy only has $1.9k in bank. hes willing to give them that but i dont think he should. he bought the car and 5 days later it blew up on him.
tomorrow we going back to see if we can bump it down more. his drivers test is on saturday and i dont think hes going to make it ... while he had the car he was using it to practice for his test in. he was not racing this car at all.
so my question /bg/ . should my buddy have to pay for the engine ?
