you have no legal ground to stand on regardless of what you may believe. he did in fact sign an as-is waiver, and as such, that's about as far as it'll get. generally customer service of places take care of issues like this so as to not tarnish their name, but good luck with a car-dealership doing that, the chances of that are slim to none on an issue like this.

That's what happens when you buy a used car. He signed as-is. That being said I work in a garage and getting a used engine shouldn't cost 2.4k unless that included labor to put it in, and even then that seems a bit high. Price around at private businesses and see how much they quote you, chances are for a job like that they'll be cheaper (Unless you need to get a new PCM and it needs to be flashed, that car is semi-newish so it might). If you want me to I could price you some out tomorrow at work (I'm in PA) but dunno how well the prices would do for you in Ohio >.>

My first car was a 93 Pontiac Bonneville that was handed down to me by my parents. Once the car hit 100k miles the car started breaking down like clockwork. First the brakes went. Got those fixed. Then the wheel bearings went. Got those fixed. Alternator died 2 to 3 times. Got those fixed. Water pump. Got it fixed. The last straw was when the gas tank rotted through and started leaking gas. I knew I was going to get a new car but I wanted this one to last for just one more summer. So I get a quote to get a new gas tank on the car...$1000. Holy christ, I think that was more than the car was actually worth, but I decided to foot the bill and get it done. I'm not shitting you, but on the way to drive the car to the shop to get it fixed, I proceed to make a right turn onto a street. So I flip the turn signal, and what happens? The fucking turn signal wand falls right out of the fucking steering console. The car was literally crumbling in my hands. To make matters worse it was raining that day and with the turn signal wand fallen out I couldn't use my windshield wipers, and the seal on the door to keep water out was broken on two of the doors so water is streaming into the car and getting all over the leather seats. I think it was probably the most pathetic moment I've ever had in a car. That last few months I had the car I was basically paying a car payment every month in repairs for it. I might as well have just bought a new car. And that's what I did. I put an ad in the paper to sell the car for $1000. Guy comes over and says he had only $700 in cash on him. I said, "Fuck you, you read the ad", and then looked at the car that was leaking gas all over the pavement in front of my house. I shook my head and said "sold, get that fucking thing out of here, now."

But, throwing a rod throught the side of the blocks means either.

A: The engine was obviously about to fall apart (Oil pimp completely shot, few other things could cause it)

B: Your buddy cranked it wide open and left it there till the rod went through. (Racing, driving like a jerk, etc)

Not saying your friend is lying, but I rebuilt engines for years, and most of the time A was what I was told, and B was the actual truth. (Pretty easy to see once the motor is torn down)

The fact that GM still uses pushrod motors in the first place is archaic to begin with, but you don't have detonation like this without a reason. There's a good chance the owner before took absolutely no care of the car whatsoever, and you friend inherited a $7k paperweight.

I bought a 1994 BMW 325i for $5k, 96k on it, no warranty. But I worked as a BMW mechanic for 4 years so I knew what to do when the thing lunched the water pump (and subsequently the head gasket) three months later. Its just brainless to spend that kind of money with no coverage unless you have the capacity to fix it on your own. Also, that "131 point inspection" is mostly a visual thing. Dealerships count checking the Headlights (left and right) tail lights (same) and blinkers (L, R, front and back) as 8 points in that inspection. It may also include BS like washer fluid level, gas level, visual coolant check, visual hose check, you get the idea. They're not going to yank the head and check for proper valve seating.

I'm willing to bet he revved the poor thing to 9 grand on stone-cold oil, but thats just me.

Ahhh, stories like this remind me of how my '02 Kia's alternator blew the same day I took it off the lot. Lucky for me I decided to pay $15 extra a month on my car payment for bumper-bumper coverage. Not bad, only a $100 deductible and included road side assistance. So what would have cost me $400 (fucking Korean parts.) only cost me $100.

Oh, and tell your friend those are the joys of owning a car. A failed engine is the tip of an iceberg.

Honestly I think both you and your friend are stupid for thinking he deserves anything out of it. It is really no ones fault it broke. Those kind of things just happen. Even if it's in PERFECT working order, older parts can cause rods to sling.

And honestly, if you really do go down there and video protest, it will make you look like more of an ass than him because you and your friends sound like silly little kids who don't know a thing about buying a vehicle.

Bolded part says you don't know how to actually buy a car at all. Buying a "warranty", especially an aftermarket warranty is like throwing money straight down the drain.

As someone that has worked in aftermarket parts, service, and sales, those warranties (much like Best Buy's "warranties") are nothing more than money making sales items. As people have previously stated, the fine print makes it more of a joke than anything else

I may have mis-read. The OP never stated whether it was a connecting rod or a pushrod that snapped. Given the nature of an OHV engine to react poorly to high RPMs, I assumed the latter. Further, the connecting rods in the GTP (GTX I've never heard of, I'm assuming they're the same thing) are forged to take the extra brunt form the supercharger. Snapping them would require a herculean amount of neglect and stupidity. I'm not saying it can't be done, but other things would have tipped you off first to the problem (rod knock anyone?)

Breaking a connecting rod in a Sprinter Trueno would be a much simpler exercise, considering the nature in which the car is being driven. Add 10lb of boost and a 9k redline on a stock bottom end and you're asking for something to give. You'd be more apt to blow out the head gasket or break a valve, but its not out of the question.
