And since neither of your opinions mean jack, why do you keep tossing yours around if it means nothing?

No, but you might find it intriguing that top paid CEOs and other executives collectively have higher vocabulary levels than any other type of professional...including English professors and writers. ;D

The financial statement of every public company (read: companies listed on any stock index) are a matter of public information. It's a matter of law that these documents must be disclosed to anyone who wants to see them.

The 'confidencial business documents' you're talking about are those that deal with trade secrets, including proprietary technology and formula (ie. Coca Cola formula, KFC spice, google source code). It has nothing to do with financial transactions and expanses.

There is absolutely nothing about the price of servers that is boarderline trade secret. In fact, most companies are not shy about disclosing trade secret, because they have copy right protection. There is no 'competition' to speak of that is you might fear would steal your business, and the information we ask will hurt your competitive edge.

Don't assume people here don't know anything about business, because we will call you out on it, and you will look like a fool.

If there is nothing to hide, then there certainly isn't a reason not to post them up. If what you say is true, it would shut everyone up.
For numerous reasons. If you've ever run a business, you know the first thing you don't do is release all your confidential business documents. When Enron went belly up, even then those numbers weren't made public. They were kept confidential and only those who needed to know got access to the documents. None of you need to know this stuff. You only want it for your personal edification. That is not a justifiable reason for us to release private business documents. Wikia needed those numbers. We gave them to them. I summarized them to you. I'm not providing you with confidential information.
Can you at least tell us what company you lease from?
    Seconded.

As for not "releasing confidential business documents," it's not like we're asking for your social security numbers and tax records. The fact that you vehemently refuse to post even one invoice, the specifications of the servers, or the company they were leased from is pretty solid proof that you're both full of shit.

P.S.: How dare you say I've never contributed anything to the wiki! I'm a very important contributor!
P.P.S.: Let's not forget that you usually post my .DAT mines without crediting me.

Those companies are required to release very generic numbers. They are not required to release the details of contracts, or even, in many cases, the other companies involved in those contracts. Basically, they release the exact same information that Mierin already released.

Second, I don't understand why people, who claim to know what they are talking about, are asking from whom they lease their servers. Anyone with even a remote clue about how web hosting works (read: anyone who might actually have a little bit of insight about what it might take to run such a website) would be able to find the answer to that question himself in less than 10 seconds.

And how many publicly-traded companies take donations to keep their servers up and running? The analogy doesn't fit.

What does fit is that cyclopedia took people's money for a stated purpose, may have squandered it, and now basically sold out on the main reason they had the fundraiser in the first place. Gee, why are people so angry?

Actually...publicly traded companies have to release very detailed information about all their transactions. With recent SEC changes some things in the company must be disclosed to shareholders immediately (form 8-K)....including any major change in ownership.

I believe its SEC form S-1 or SB-1 (depending on the size of your corp) that is a complete audit of every single financial transaction you've made for the past 3 years. This form is public information and must be completed when you go public as well as every year (form 10-K) thereafter....Companies don't release "generic numbers." Maybe Enron did...but we all know what happened to them.

Aurik: the analogy did fit for what it was applied to, and now people are just making up random crap that isn't even true.

    Re: Dear Ganiman, (op updated)

That is simply not true. The recent changes imposed by Sarbanes-Oxley require that companies be able to account for every penny, and for every penny to be audited and certified by an independent firm with no financial ties to the original company, but the company does not have to release the receipts, documentation, etc.. They must simply certify that everything they report is true. You can read the relevant sections here ...

    http://www.sec.gov/rules/final/33-8177.htm

But I'm going to agree with Aurik and say that the procedures for a publically traded company are pretty much irrelevant to the discussion, so we might as well table that part of the discussion anyway.

And also said they are working on a way to give it back, one possibility of which is a huge WotG giveaway, since at the time the money was taken there were no plans of getting bought out. If you can think of a better way to return everyone's money, when some people donated as little as a nickel, when all you have is their email address and in some cases not even that, please suggest.

The donations were for the sole purpose of helping to keep the site running. All the money was used as promised until they got bought, at which point dingdingding, the money wasn't needed anymore. The mousepads and t-shirts were expensive as fuck, everyone agrees. Shit happens, lesson learned, buy cheaper shit and/or figure out a more efficient shipping method and/or don't give donation incentives next time. Got it. Crying about the t-shirts and mousepads won't change the past, nor will it change the fact that probably less than a handful of people bitching in this thread even donated in the first place.

Subject: Out of stock - FFXI

I would like to know if there's anything you can tell me about the recent
dwindle in stock on gil for Final Fantasy XI. I've been trying to buy some
for almost 3 weeks now and it is just completely out of stock every single
time I check. This isn't like IGE, I've done business in the past and you
are always *overstocked*. Then all of a sudden this. If there's anything
you can tell me I would really appreciate it. I spoke to your live help and
they just gave me a cookie cutter line about how "it usually doesn't take us
long to restock" but let's be honest it's been over 3 weeks now and *out of
stock *every single time i check. Is IGE exiting the Final Fantasy XI
market? I hope not but to be honest that appears to be what's going on.
Edit: No, this isn't obviously where the missing two thousand went. But loldivisortheory, mirite!? Enjoying that Mandau, honey?

    Re: Dear Ganiman, (op updated)

I don't care that I'm wrong here, the important point was that they companies don't release very generic numbers...numbers can't even be "generic." Numbers are numbers. They can't be generic. Saying "generic numbers" in this case is saying "we don't have to disclose that we spent all the donation money on booze and cheap hookers."

All that information has to be accounted for and if it doesn't exist, then there is some scandal going on. Beings that this is supposedly a non-profit, most of that info should be readily and willingly shared!

Which would be fine except we have no proof that's what the money went to or the servers since they can't provide a simple email or so with costs, we're going to have to err on the side of logic and say they stole a lot of people's money. If they truly want to work on a way to give it back, it better be every penny if they're not going to prove what they spent.

Edit: Looks like Taj proved my point.
