    Movement in Dreams

Last night marked the third occasion in which I have had a dream where I was performing a motion in a dream (like a punch, kick, or elbow) and performed the move in real life. Each time my fiance just happens to be next to me.

The dream last night was me sitting at a bar, and the guy to my right was completely infringing on my bar space by putting his entire left arm over my spot at the bar. So I'm like "Dude, wtf?", and proceed to push him away with my right arm. He resists. Finally I give him a sharp right elbow. At this point I wake up and my fiance says "wtf, why did you just elbow me?"

In another dream I had a ghost was on top of me attacking me so I threw a right cross. I wake up and see my fist and arm extended about half a foot above her head. She woke up that as well.

Has anyone else experience this kind of stuff? I'm afraid I'm going to get hauled off one day for battering my wife.

I've done stuff like that a few times. Usually its if I dream that someone else is in my room, then I kinda jump out of bed and wake up at the same time.

A few years ago I had a dream where I was phoning my mate to apologise for something, woke up and my phone was lying next to me in my bed.. Checked the call register and his number was the last I called. However, when I spoke to him the next day he doesn't recall receiving any call from me that night. ;p

Most I've done was physically jerk my body in my bed while asleep if something in my dream required me to actually react to something quick, otherwise I believe I'm fairly still throughout the night.

It's never happened to me(the one doing the hitting), but I've been the recipient(sp?) of many punches and elbows courtesy of my girlfriend. She actually elbowed me in the nose one time so hard I thought she broke it.

When i was young i would often dream of tripping and falling, which would cause me to jerk right up in bed. It was weird.

Your sig/avatar shows you have an obsession.

On topic, I've never swung or kicked, but I have jerked really hard and woke up if someone attacked me or something.

I had a dream I was wrestling in the WWF once. I was doing a move off the top rope and I threw myself off my bed. :D

    I found it amusing.

    Re: Movement in Dreams

This is caused by an over-active brain when sleeping, and is pretty common. I have a hard time sleeping with people because of this, cause I usually wake them up if they're beside me.

My most common dream (and recurring one) is where I'm a little kid again laying on my parents' bed and then falling off, but just before I'm about to hit the floor, I thrust my hands in the air IRL to stop myself from falling. Freakin weird though

If it's a woman you're marrying, fiancée has two e's.

On-topic, I was under the impression that going into R.E.M. sleep, where you dream about left-wing indie bands, meant that your brain released some chemical whatnot that paralyzed your body so you don't act out your dreams. Not being any kind of expert on the subject beyond watching a documentary on sleeping disorders I can't say what's wrong when you start moving around, but the gist of the documentary was that it's not a good thing when you do.

    Re: Movement in Dreams

It's happened to me twice that I can recall, once when I was a little kid and had one of those things above my bed to make it look all princess-y, you know? I was dreaming I was pulling something up over a ledge, hanging from a rope, and woke up from pulling on the princess thingy so hard it came crashing down on top of me.

The second occurrence happened when I was still with my ex boyfriend, I was dreaming that some crazy, ugly Asian chick with a mouth resembling Steven Tyler's, was trying to kill me. After going through your standard nightmare spiel, I decided to give her a solid right hook, and woke up just as I rammed my fist into my sleeping boyfriend's face. It was hard enough to draw blood and leave him with a really solid bruise and a swollen nose for days later.

A year and a half later he cheated on me and I kicked him out, so I don't really feel bad about it anymore.

From my understanding, our bodies are paralyzed so we don't move and act out any dreams, and not just in R.E.M. sleep. In R.E.M. sleep our brain waves are the same as we when we're awake (like being active instead of more dormant when sleeping), but I'm not sure that it has anything to do with actually acting out our dreams.

My theory on the whole thing is that when you wake up acting out your dreams happens when you start going back up to stage 1/2 sleep from stage 4 or R.E.M., which would explain why we're not "paralyzed" but still dreaming.

Speaking of which though, just the other night I had a dream where I had to fight this guy, and hitting him wasn't working, but I swung back for a hard swing and it woke me up to where I punched out at nothing. Luckily for my girlfriend I was on the floor instead of in the bed with her. Haha.

This one time I was dreaming about drowning and I woke up choking on my drool with my head and arm all wet in math class. I think that day, I had the class laughing (including the teacher) half the period. We'd start doing our work and my best friend would just fucking crack up laughing and that would set the rest of the class off lol French Immersion was fucking hilariously funny for 4 years

There is this one dream I think I had more than once because it really sticks out... it was like I was standing on uh, big platform that sort of was like tennis court, and there were tons of other (also tennis-like and different colors) platforms lined up like stairs with like +40-60 feet drop difference in between them. And uh, I walked off and fell, then woke up.

And one other dream I had, very weird and funny and almost too hard to believe. I used to sleep in an attic with a low celling(well especially in the corners where my bed was). I had a dream someone(actually a friend from 3rd grade, to add to weirdness) punched me in the face, which woke me up with jump and I hit my head.
