Concern about BG Wiki

Kind of off-topic, but is there some sort of page or tutorial on how to edit wiki pages? I'd like to be able to contribute when the templates are done, but i suck at editing wiki ~_~

It'd be great if there was a box or containing some random informations about BG lore/meme's/running jokes/historical background concerning the subject the article above was revolving around, including links to the respective thread on the forum.

Just to make a few example off the top of my head the Ninurta's Sash page should provide some info regarding the "lolsash" stuff and Map (now I bet he's gonna post a line lol), the AV page would mention Ebon Panels and whatnot while the Ridill one could show the lyrics of "throw some Ridellz on some shit" and so forth.

I actually suggested something to this effect, to have a 'fun facts' tab, which could include things ranging from reasons WAR/WHM was popular once (protectra/etc gave a ton of hate way back when, we're talking like, level 50 cap game), to Taisaijin, to Raise III price gouging, to common auto translation puns, to inside jokes that have pervaded FFXI as a whole, like ebon panels.

Wikipedia has a crap ton of tuts on how to do stuff. Should be on the main page somewhere.

Also think this would be a fun idea. Not only having our own memes listed (needs a page for big kills), but all the lolfacts of FFXI, little glitches, and things SE screwed up on, etc. How /BRD gave a lot of hate, as well as hax run speed, or metion how it was once possible to use the dring trick, or how SE over buffed 2h WS for a time, etc.

Any plans for bilingual support? (IE: NA/JP)

With the amount of people we have on here speaking both languages, i'd imagine a good bit of information could be added, or more formulas hashed out that we havn't quite gotten yet.

Hardly in the position to be making demands as more of a lurker, but I'm in agreement with the others who feel making information restricted would be a bad thing. Attempting to keep info devoid of opinion while focusing on fact would also be another definite plus. It doesn't take long to see bashing other sites is some kind of pastime here, which is kind of self-defeating trash talk. Be the best through action, not ego. May as well be a bad Chapelle skit otherwise.

In all seriousness, are there things about FFXI that simply aren't covered (properly) on the old wiki? BG Wiki could fill up all gaps the old wiki left. I was thinking, monster behaviour, zone respawn times, monster movement patterns, detailed stuff like that, unimportant as it may seem, it could be handy to know.

And uh, opinion isn't bad per se (if it's backed up by at least something), but a wiki is not the place to turn into a flame war. That's more of a forum thing >_>

As long as stuff like "only noobs wipe to LBC" or "if you take a full alliance to that NM, your shell sucks" aren't present, I don't really have objection to reasonable opinion. Everyone starts somewhere, and while we'd all like to say we were taken into the first great HNMLS of our respective servers that we applied to, that's not always the case. Some of us have had to wade through the dredges until applications get taken again, they demanded you had certain gear pieces that may've required time in less optimal shells since they can't be bought or soloed beforehand, and so on.

Keep that kind of crap in line and I can see people being won over. To be fair, I don't really see it as a competition so much as simple evolution, though.

Leaving a wiki open to "all to edit" would eventually lead into some soorta miss info/flamewar stuff I'd think. and randomly would be nice to see a useful wikki incase I go back to playing FFXI again, although I still do keepup with the +18 FFXI community, in both dats/pics/doujins haha >.>

If there are massive flamefests, couldn't we bring the discussion here, since I'm sure a lot more people would check a thread on here than the discussion on the wiki? An answer would be found by all the people here arguing and something would be resolved.

While I can see the idea behind limiting access, and that may or may not work on an editing level, limiting who can view it would be complete fail imo. You'll just end up with a flood of morons joining BG and posting up to 50, or 100, or whatever the viewing limit is, so they can use it.

And yes, a working search function would be godly.

The people that have volunteered to mod the BGWiki are people I would have faith in to prevent abusive changes.
