This is important, and I'd feel uncomfortable contributing to anything with a sketchy license, because I've seen what can happen as a result. Anything less free than the GNU FDL would make me wary of possible future consequences.Originally Posted by Spider-Dan
The only "drawback" I can see is that people who contribute to BGwiki wouldn't want the folks behind FFXIclopedia to obtain perceived profit from their efforts. I guess I can understand that; after all, I released something under a "free for non-commercial use" license rather than a GNU license because it was originally written for a non-profit radio station, and I felt that allowing large commercial stations (who are trying to crush small radio at the same time as being awful and boring) to benefit from my work was counterproductive to my goals and distasteful.
Also, I think that there's a lot of stuff BGwiki wouldn't even want to inherit from FFXIclopedia. I'm sure many of us could rewrite the Assault section, and do a better job (and a lot of those maps need labels). Obviously BGwiki will be the place for Salvage info. Most of the guides can suck it, although there are a few that I like and haven't seen elsewhere.
But there's a massive swath of items, quests, NPCs, and other stuff, not to mention the connecting links between them, that's good and usable and would be a huge undertaking to duplicate, especially without copying. Good luck, I guess; that's some drudge work right there. Hopefully people will do it.
Even if the decision is made to not copy a scrap of information and recreate everything from the ground up, the license is important. It's important to think about who will own this content, and what will happen if people change their minds/have an argument/drop off the face of the 'net. I'd hate to help create a ball that anyone, or any group of people, could decide to take and go home, intentionally or otherwise.
Edit: the license they picked is awesome, and it looks like one guy is even offering to do a lot of the initial heavy lifting. I couldn't be happier.
I'd +1 a little section for memes in articles at the bottom, or at least have a section with a gigantic list, bigger than the one that's already there
I know BG Wiki is still in the early stages, but I have a conern as well:
So far it seems like the memes are looking like a priority to some as opposed to the actual information which I thought was the point. I know there have been people working hard on the actual info, but I can't help but be disappointed when I see the Sage Sundi page, then look for something like ToAU Mission info and find nothing.
I'd gladly help out with adding info, but from the most recent update it seems standard users are unable to.
I'd love to quit using the other wiki, but at this point there's no real alternatives of the same quality for useful info.
Sorry if that sounded overly critical since I do appreciate the work going into this.
Edit: After looking at the other meme entries, it seems like it was just the Sundi page.![]()
To those who say:
Page History shows a lot. You'll always know who comes out with Information first. What about FF Wiki stealing info from BG Wiki?
Who cares if FFXI Wiki steals from BGWiki, the latter will be the better site and anyone with a brain will use it instead.
but there's so many people who don't qualify for that statement!Originally Posted by BRP

Right now, the focus is on getting the templates for each individual section up and running. Once that is done, THEN we can focus on getting information up and running.Originally Posted by Tomiko

we do understand the concerns of the memes becoming too much, the where do you draw the line between information and funny. Due to a misunderstanding on my part, the memes were initially integrated further into the actual information. As of a little meeting last night we are adjusting it so the information is completely separate from the meme. The funny stuff will still be there because it cant be BG without the lol, but it will be more of a "See also: lolSash"
So we will associate the funny with the important, but the funny wont overshadow it.
Perfectly understandable. Great job on the tables as well, they're looking very nice and easy to read.Originally Posted by The Blackrose

That's a relief to hear, I was also sharing some doubts stated above.Originally Posted by Sonomaa
