Wait'll you fight something with enlight.
My enlight does 48-50 damage usually on my chigoe. I fight a qutrub, and the espell does 98 damage a hit ;p

"Show no mercy!!" Seems to always get my cave antlion to do manibule bite(or whatever, I'm not looking it up on ffxiwiki), but one time, he did Venom Spray(ditto) at the end of a fight. Maybe commands wear off over time?
Use BGwiki. It will be more accurate and up to date.Originally Posted by BRP

So if Qutrubs take double physical and magical damage, do they also take double damage from DoT?
Not sure. In my last fight (with that mandy I quoted above) it kept doing 'additional effect: poison'. I didn't notice my HP falling though. That's about the first time I've been DoTed.Originally Posted by Khamsin
They do take the double damage but mobs' dmg in the pit doesn't seem to go up as much as their hp, so a qutrub that's getting pwned at low levels is much better off as they get higher.
Like I said, at the higher levels I've seen a couple pretty damn good ones.
That's good to know, because I really don't want to start over.Originally Posted by Plow
And while home for lunch I found that setting him up as defensive (Guard! Parry! Whatever!) helps a whole lot. Fighting against a mandy one level above him, for the first half of the fight he drained every other round. He looked to be winning, until he stopped casting. (Not sure if he ran out of MP or what...)
on the topic of command, what's wrong with my wyvern? extremely tamed while somewhat aggressive btw.

I went up the platform for 20 fights and spam No mercy in hoping to change back to very aggressive so it will start using WS (while doing this it uses WS every few hits), but it never went back to very aggressive and when stop commanding it, all it does is normal attack again.
I saw many pets that side attack or side WS or WS randomly but I can only command side attack on this one and log off and it'll side attack but never WS.
I'm pretty sure that behavior is like a 2 dimensional chart with degrees of wild/tame on one axis and degrees of aggressive/defensive on the other. The actions of your pet without you giving it a command is definitely based on this combination of the two traits. It seems though that it's possible to override whatever it is doing at the moment if you pick something else that greatly differs from its normal behavior. Like my mandy used to be extremely tame and extremely defensive and it would tend to hold its TP for awhile when I did "Think and think again" and "Back off a bit." But as soon as I did "Show No Mercy!" it would do a headbutt.
I've got a level 15 NIN cactuar (wild and somewhat aggressive) that refuses to use ninjutsu. I gave it Main Job: Ninja, Job Traits: Ninja, Ninjutsu Scrolls, and Ninja Tool Supply plates on day one, and it's never once used ninjutsu! Is it because it's always been wild-to-extremely-wild and I need to tame it? Is there some command I should be spamming?
My nin uses nukes on defensive, I havent' been lvling him though so I don't remember tame versus wild, although I only mess with that side of the commands when I'm up there. I haven't gotten him to utsusemi yet, rarely debuff. I did witness an interesting thing about a nin though, I fought the same one twice in a row and the owner was not on the stage either time. I didn't think to write down his temperament, but in the first fight he mostly meleed, nuked a few times, don't recall utsu or any debuff. The second fight he went through the full range of debuffs and used utsu 3 or 4 times. It was very weird.
What it seems to me so far... When you use a command it changes your pets behavior if it is a disciplined pet, and can possibly erase its planned AI for the fight with each one you use, but changing it's temperament on accident by changing up commands often can give undesired results. Each facet of wild/tame/aggressive/defensive seems to trigger certain things per mob type and job, once you your pet is disciplined and you have it on a temperament where it does what you want it do without commands, it's best to just leave it alone. In my experience sit seems the AI will take over from there and be more effective at things like triggering stun/sleep TP move to interrupt the opponent than if you keep spamming commands.
I have spent the most time experimenting on my crab, which was at first a RDM. He started out a bit wild I think, and would often use bubble shower. I spammed defense and on very tame and very defensive using think and then think again would cause him to cast regen on himself and use metallic body TP move, while using guard block parry hold would cause him to cure himself and use scissor guard. If I left him alone he would mix up both. If I used show no mercy he would use diaga, messing with the other wild/tame commands seemed to cause him to use other enhancing magics such as barspells, aquaveil, and en-spells. He cast blink once but I am not sure how I managed that one. I then changed him to MNK and began using don't think kill and/or less thinking more striking, I keep forgetting which one to stick to>< Anyway he is down to only somewhat tame instead of extremely and he's mixing bubble curtain in with metallic body and scissor guard. He has not countered once yet... I think I have seen him guard... if changing him to wild does not fix this I will go back to tame with watch your opponent and then attack and if that doesn't work then get him to aggressive and see what happens. I don't think I want him to stop using scissor guard though. My NIN/MNK is defensive as well and he counters so I am hoping this part is linked to wild/tame.
Sorry if I sound mildly retarded, I'm just waiting for family guy to download so I can watch it and go to bed, super tired.
I agree the most important part of commands is to alter temperament, if only because you can't be there all the time. Say you're really successful, which is everyone's goal, right? You're not gonna sit in Diablo for six hours giving commands. Not to mention AI is faster than us. Accordingly, I think temperament is very important. As a simple example, my rabbit is extremely aggressive* and primarily uses Whirl Claws. Which is awesome.
*Has anyone else noticed if you check with the NPC, it'll give you one temperament, but the announcer will say one level lower? Like extremely aggressive and very aggressive, respectively.
Yes. And that messed me up while trying to set up the SA behavior. It must be a bug...Originally Posted by Custom M
so after watching all those smart pets (especially rabbits) who side attacks, side WS or just simple WS spam WITHOUT the player giving command, I thought it must be the combination of temperaments which is "somewhat tamed and somewhat aggressive". Now finally I took my pet from "extremely tamed and extremely aggressive" down to "somewhat tamed, somewhat aggressive". It uses 1 WS near when it died which is dispelling wind.....
99% sure that discipline determines whether or not it follows a command you give it, which only increases over time and doesn't increase.
99% sure that aggressive/defensive determines whether or not it attempts to dodge and enemy WS or side attack during an enemy WS.
What I'm wondering is if Wild/Tame determines how much TP the pet saves up before using a WS.
My bunny is a side attacking fool. I got it with 'somewhat tame/somewhat aggressive'. And I had to go by what the NPC listed it as, NOT what the announcer says. Stupid announcer, giving out false info. Make sure you check it at the NPC.Originally Posted by Irene
yea, I check NPC after every fight. NPC says "tame and aggressive" while announcer says "somewhat tamed and somewhat aggressive". Is there "somewhat tamed and somewhat aggressive" from NPC? btw side attack is easy I think, it seems it uses side attack after I use "think" or "watch opponent...." and the fights after that but never see a WS. What is the command that you usually use when you're on the platform?Originally Posted by ThistleChaser
Exactly. The NPC needs to say *somewhat* tame, not just tame. (That caught me, too.) Both the announcer and the NPC should say "somewhat tamed and somewhat aggressive".Originally Posted by Irene
You can get your pet to side attack by doing Watch your opponent, then attack + Give it a little more bite. Do it until it's temperament doesn't change anymore and it'll be most effective. If your mob has a sleep tp move you can try Watch your opponent, then attack + Guard! Block! Parry! Hold! and it should try to sleep the opponent's tp moves.
