Mac laptop questions

1.) im trying to figure out where about 60 of my 70 gigs went to is there anyway to find out whats taking up so much fucking room? with a program or something? i swear ive looked through everything i could and im missing around 60 gigs of my 70.

2.) im tryin to figure out that if i did lose that much memory some fuckin way does anyone know if Final cut pro 6 and other affilated programs need to be on the main hard drive or if they can be ran off of external hard drives?

3.) is there any way i can upgrade the mac laptop hard drive? D:! i didnt think id need that much but i was wrong apparently lol

Well, you mentioned FCP as a program...are you doing video work? That'll fill up a drive quickly. Start just by seeing where the data is, probably check your account folder size, Applications, etc.

You'd have to install quite a number of programs to even hope to fill up 70GB ('cept games perhaps, but it's a Mac). Final Cut Studio 2 only requires 4GB for itself and the other 8 programs that are included.

Really, if you have started doing video work at all, your DV captures or whatever are most likely the culprit.

Yes, but personally I'd look at just getting an external drive to start with. You'd get more space for the money, not risk voiding your warranty, and have a much easier time setting it up.

from a terminal in OS X (im assuming you have OS X) you can run unix commands

df will tell you where most of your space is taken up (which partition)

still looking into commands that would find bigger files

try
cd / <enter>
ls -SRal | more <enter>

it will take you a bit but that lists ALL directories with their file sizes sorted biggest to smallest

For all people: if you're on Windows, get a program called Folder Size. It breaks down your hard drive by folder sizes (durr), thus allowing you to do a nice cleanup. If you're on OS X, the same type program is called WhatSize. Trust me, even if you don't think you need it you should try them out and see what you find. For example, my dad made a movie of a bunch of pictures from my little sister's field trip and put it to music, and through WhatSize, we found the raw movie file (total size of the file alone was 189GB). We promptly deleted that shiz and moved on. 8)

figured out what was taking up space....

when i went to dl the torrent it took up as much space as it could before it found out it didnt have enough room and i thought it just made a 0kb folder i just assumed ^_^;; lol

Yes i do video work, i have never ever captured to my computers hard drive unless i absolutley had to and thats been once at a Hi-Def Shoot of a short movie. Always save to your External folks!, save and save often!, AND! remember to switch your scratch disks! !!
