As others have said, BGwiki will inevitably become better than FFXIclopedia. Also, I'm willing to do whatever I can to help with BGwiki. The faster we can break our dependence of FFXIclopedia, the better.

The day when BGwiki is finally ready will be our declaration of independence!

As long as BGwiki is straight information, as much as the current wiki is, and is open to the public I'll be willing to switch over. Until it gets set up though, I need me some assault info presented in a clean and concise format, owner running away with thousands or not.

I barely ever used the old wiki because it was a piece of shit, and I'll continue to barely use it.

Until something better comes along (read: once BG wiki is fleshed out), yea. Sure, all the information is available in other places, but there's nowhere else I can think of that covers so many things, and the cross-linking between related articles seals the deal.

I mean seriously, you want me to look up fucking quest information on alla?

To be perfectly honest, there have been times where I was looking for certain bits of important information and I searched all the sites out there besides alla... and then when I looked through people's comments about the item/quest/NM I would find exactly what I was looking for.

Not any one site has all the information, and none of them are useless. Alla's not usually the first place I go for info, but I still go there for info.

Don't get me wrong, it's just that ffxiclopedia is so complete that it makes a perfect first resource. Every FFXI webpage seems to have its strengths and weaknesses; wiki's ease of use and variety of info is its strength, but the information is not always completely fleshed-out or accurate. Alla may not be as convenient to navigate, especially if you're trying to sort through all the posts under each topic, but all those posts means there's a wide variety of information on each topic as opposed to the one-item one-page format for wiki. Somepage has an amazing search system, I can't think of any other site that makes it so easy to search for "all neck pieces for red mage with +mnd" or "all armor for samurai equippable by Elvaan with +str between levels 13 and 46." Even KI has... um... well, if you need an excuse to watch porn you can always launch their forums and rub one out in the time it takes to load. So that's something.

It's actually something I've thought about when I'm bored, how each site seems to be unique, each in ways that complement the other. It's pretty cool, how it worked out that way.

Eventually, ffxiclopedia will be untrustworthy (content-wise) because they'll fall behind on the updates because all the people who used to update and add info there will be doing it on BG wiki instead. The majority of the people doing the major updates and adding new content were from BG, afterall.

Although, in some aspects, they already were untrustworthy. Paralyzed weaponskills come to mind...

Either way, in the long run, ffxiclopedia will fall by the wayside and generally contain out-of-date information and be missing entire sections (from patches, the expansion, new content, etc.) It'll only be updated sporadically when someone decides to rip off the BG wiki to update some of the old ffxiclopedia articles. In fact, it may even start containing more misinformation than just paralyzed weaponskills. Once BG editors are out of the picture, and it's left in the hands of zam, ffxiclopedia will be bloated with inaccurate crap that no one will dispute and therefore no one will correct.

In time, it'll be abandoned as a worthwhile information source due to lack of fresh and accurate information. No one will correct mistakes, because no one will know better. Of course, by that time, Wikia will be the real losers then, not the ffxiclopedia staff. I almost feel sorry for Gil.

BGwiki will likely be superior, as long as it doesn't get spammed by idiots. i only use wiki to link people to short explanations on alla when i don't feel like explaining them myself, or to check JA/JT of jobs i'm not familiar with anyway. bradyguide for everything else, obviously.

edit: my first sentence was a bit misguided actually; the current wiki is often spammed by idiots with flat out wrong information... my worry for BGwiki is that it will be spammed by people who think they understand things but in fact just write vague, almost true walls or text, or simply spammed by lulz-aspiring nonsense.

Also, note to self; do not make poll when tired. I apologize for the lack of a clear 'no'. I assumed a clear "Yes, I'm going to use it" and everything else being "no, i'm not, i'm going to do x" would suffice. I framed my poll for "are you still using it" not "are you going to stop using it once another resource becomes available" because, *shock*, there are already other resources available. Having failed to outline this is my own damn fault, so I guess I can't really bitch to much.

The dump is for my personal use so I don't generate hits or revenue for the real wiki until bgwiki is up to speed; I'll set it up on my dumb box that hosts my various network services (TS, ftp, etc) and just use it for local browsing.

*If* I can redeploy it (don't see why it wouldn't be possible, just being ever the skeptic).
