Re: Sticky: Nvidia Video Cards and Windows Vista

    Fix didn't work for me

I got a Dell XPS with a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS and none of the fixes allowed me to run FFXI.. so now I have to return it. However I still need a new laptop and I would like it to run FF.
I'm wondering if I'm basically stuck either with a pos laptop that doesn't have a real vid card or getting a really pricey one.

You need to use a modded inf file to get these drivers working on a laptop. You can find the modded inf file for v169.17 32bit Vista here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=16428.

After you download the inf file and the driver from laptopvideo2go, go to computer > OS (C > NVIDIA > WinVista. In the WinVista folder create a folder called 169.17 and extract the driver data into there. Then replace the inf file in the 169.17 folder with the modded one and run setup.exe.

If your experiencing this problem on a desktop computer and not a laptop, try running Vista in safe mode and installing the driver (no modded inf file should be needed).

Hopefully this helps all you laptop users out there who were as frustrated as me. FFXI runs perfect for me now.

PS: anyone else with a laptop running 64bit Vista heres the modded inf for that too: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...howtopic=16431
this was posted this awhile ago but i was trying to do what you said but its not there. it said theres no compatible drivers.. but my 8400 card should be compatible. did i do something wrong lol? i just downloaded it and clicked it from my desktop, this is my 1st comp so i am pretty new at what i have to do.

err it gets to the last step and it says my drivers are up to date, doesnt let me install them fully..... 2 hrs trying this now im so confuseed

Is your O/S pirated? Where did you get it, is it activated? Are you sure you're not using a 64-bit OS? Did you get the Drivers from the Nvidia site or somewhere else?

not pirated, original OEM copy, I am positive it is a 32-bit OS, have checked it in the properties of my computer. Drivers were from here yes, the only thing is that I have not activated it.

I would uninstall all your video card drivers, reboot, and try the install again. Make sure you're downloading it from the Nvidia site. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to tell you. I googled your problem and couldn't come up with much. Try the uninstall/reinstall route though, and see if it works. I would also work on activating Windows, while I don't think that's the cause of your problem, it wouldn't hurt to eliminate it as a cause.

well, I've pretty much done the same thing, googled everything, couldn't find much, uninstalled drivers and whatnot, pretty much read every thread there is and it couldn't identify the problem so I just said -fuck it- and dumped vista...

    XP ftw...

Re: Sticky: Nvidia Video Cards and Windows Vista

I am now using windows xp, and the 169.17 drivers, I could be mistaken but I should be able to run ffxi on full settings without any lag at all?

standing in front of whitegate mog house, or in dynamis, getting a range of 12-17 FPS

I thought windows xp and nvidia cards were supposed to have no problem at all?

I'm running an 8800 GTS 512 with a quad core processor if it means anything, maybe ffxi is no good with the latest version of directX?? (9.0c or something now?) I have no clue... >.<

I've never had 30FPS at the AH even with my ATI cards.

Re: Sticky: Nvidia Video Cards and Windows Vista

Yeah, I'm not sure what people are expecting here. It's been said a million times, Final Fantasy XI makes little use of your video card. Buying a better video card will not provide a huge improvement to your framerates, and in some cases won't improve it at all.

FFXI is more processor intensive than anything else, and it only makes use of a single core. Buying dual/quad cores will not improve your FFXI experience, and there isn't a patch or update that's going to fix it. Face it that FFXI is an old game, based on outdated hardware, and as long as your game works and is playable, be happy with it.

    wrong.

and lol @ "xp 4tw" in previous post of yours because you are having driver issues that aren't detecting your OS being vista 32bit. i had the exact same problems with an ati card using windows XP. i formatted after not being able to figure out what the problem was.

Re: Sticky: Nvidia Video Cards and Windows Vista

If you've "upgraded" to Windows XP, use the latest stable non-beta drivers available on the nvidia website. The 169.17-169.28 beta drivers offered little or no improvement over the latest stable non-beta driver releases in all of the systems that I've tested it with.

And LOL I wouldn't expect great framerates in Dynamis, Besieged, or Campaign on any system with any video card. The best performance I've seen in Dynamis was 25+ fps in a 1024x768 window (w/ 1024x1024 BG res) without turning off any of the game effects in the Misc/Misc2 menus, and only in a low-man Dynamis-Sandoria of all places. Everywhere else for me it's slower with the same config, even with a low-man setup. It's improved enough by turning down the animation frame rate in most cases that it does not bother me. This on a new Intel dual-core system with an 8800GTX and plenty of RAM under XP.

I've also found that non-widescreen resolutions seem to look and perform better overall in FFXI. 1024x768 (1024x1024 BG res) seems to be an ideal resolution. 1280x1024 would probably perform similarly. But even my system has had a more pronounced slow-down during certain circumstances (like Besieged, Dynamis, Campaign, Whitegate AH, etc.) while running 1680x1050 on my old widescreen monitor, and even worse on my new 1900x1200 monitor. For the most part it was rather smooth otherwise.

Re: Sticky: Nvidia Video Cards and Windows Vista

I have been having alot of issues lately, and i dont remember it being this bad before but doing alot of campaign.

i have a 3 gig intel single core, 1 gig ram, 512 7600 gt card. With this game i assume i should be able to run everything full all the time. In campaign my record is 0.4 fps, how fun. normally around the 5 fps mark.

I have tried every nvidia driver and nothign works but games like guild wars runs perfect with max settings. I assume the 7xxxx series has this issue too? I was going to buy a new computer but for one game it seems silly. I have an agp system, ya it sucks but works, saw a ati HD2600xt for $100.00, would this be good to give me full screen full everythign in this game?

Go on the Nvidia website and download and install the 174.74 drivers. They're beta drivers so they normally don't show up under windows update or anything else, so I'm assuming you haven't tried them yet. Give em a shot, they seem to fix most all the lag problems in FFXI for a lot of people.

Have you completely uninstalled the video card, and then reinstalled with the new drivers? If you've been trying all these different drivers something may have gotten corrupted, try completely cleaning it out and then reinstalling.

Re: Sticky: Nvidia Video Cards and Windows Vista

Can some one tell me if ffxi will run on this laptop?

    All the details are listed:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 4332255236

    The card is Nivida:
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M (UMA) graphics with up to 1071MB shared video memory; S-video TV-out

Its either this lappy or a toshiba that has a radeon ati x 1200 card:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 6470144904

ATI RADEON X1200 graphics with 128MB-319MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory; S-video TV-out

Any advice would be awesome. Currently I have a amd athelon duo core at home with a nvidea 6150 SE card and game runs fine now that I have patched the hell out of vista. and updated all my drivers.
