Perhaps the Marine Corps should have taught you how to crop an image before making it into a .gif animation.

Man the life of a recon man seems so glamorous.

This thread is making me think back to reading the Bourne Trilogy and renewing my fantasy of being a "secret agent" lol.

    Re: The best Special forces?

    It's Israel.

How people aren't aware of this is beyond me, as they do in fact train some of our very best.

They pretty much originated what people think of now as special ops, their tactics, insertion stategies, etc. which originated even before Israel became a state are still used today.

And the whole damn thing started as a counter to relentless assaults on their country-- and not by fighting those assaults off, but by delivering blows behind enemy lines that essentially said to the world "You fuck with us we fuck with you a whole lot harder, and you can't stop these people, period."

Just in case anyone honestly doesn't believe that the victims of the most terrorist attacks and the people whose entire lives are spent directly combating these attacks are good enough to train Americans--

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0, ... 40,00.html

Israeli advisers are helping train US special forces in aggressive counter-insurgency operations in Iraq, including the use of assassination squads against guerrilla leaders, US intelligence and military sources said yesterday.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has sent urban warfare specialists to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, the home of US special forces, and according to two sources, Israeli military "consultants" have also visited Iraq.

US forces in Iraq's Sunni triangle have already begun to use tactics that echo Israeli operations in the occupied territories, sealing off centres of resistance with razor wire and razing buildings from where attacks have been launched against US troops.

yada yada blah blah, being the best in the world is their entire purpose in life and if they weren't their country would no longer exist, it's really that simple.

Right, you have to be a liberal to see that pure technology doesn't win wars on its own.

You pull your responses right out of Rush Limbaugh's "how to be completely retarded and announce whenever possible that you believe anyone who says anything about Iraq other than "GWB PWNS IRAQ LULZ" must be a liberal terrorist out to destroy America" blog or what?

Or the Russians in Afghanistan in 1978-82(?) with the height of their Cold War technology getting trounced by the low-tech Mjuahadeen.

well, afghans were loosing until Americans started training them and suppling them with anti-air weaponry. Some of the elements in Iraq insurgency are directly borrowed from the CIA trained afghan soviet "guerrillas".

So the technology Soviets had was effectively countered.

The troops won the Iraq war. The current situation are shockwaves after the initial war. The U.S. dominated the Iraq army in a very short time. This is a completely different military mission than was there in the beginning of the war. This is now a security mission.

Vietnam, wow, where to start. The U.S. didn't have the support at home to even start to finish that war. We were going thru a cultural revolution at the time. I have ZERO doubt that if the military was able to just be the military and do that job without being undermined at home at every turn, the U.S. military power would never lose.

That wasn't particularly the point I was trying to make. It was more or less that the Soviets had attack helicopters, tanks, APCs, divisions of troops, and a complex and deep supply chain but still couldn't manage to get the Mjahadeen soldiers where it counted. The use of U.S.-supplied Stinger man-SAM missiles and some light anti-tank weaponry did not fundamentally change the outcome of the war. The fact remained that the conventionally trained Soviet soldiers could not dislodge or effectively combat the guerrilla forces, nor did the Soviet commanders have the proper training or initiative to lead battalion sized forces in the hills of Afghanistan.

Best trained special forces? Hands down the USMC Infantry man. No soldier comes close to a Marine and on top of that you have USMC FORCE RECON platoons taking people and objects out left and right. Oh and btw, whoever said Delta Force is not a part of the military is wrong. It is a unit of the ARMY(Ain't Ready to be Marines Yet).

Actually the US does have the tech to win the war they could simply just bomb Iraq 10 times over, every inch, every crevice. However theres this thing called civilians so its not so much as tech can't win a war more as the US isn't full of people like the terrorists who decide to behead random civilians.

Best info I can find is from Wikipedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurka

But I remember hearing somewhere that there were some really amazing stories about these guys and the tactics they'd use. Reminded me of the Silverburgs from suikoden series.
