Not only did they make Jill into a useless side character (when the movie's plot and characters all directly relate to her much more than the other chick) but they fucked with what could've been a cool RE movie.

I can see people enjoying it if they haven't played any RE games, cause you don't know wtf to expect and how things should've happened. But like anyone who's a fan of the games (who arguably, are the reason game movies are made) was disappointed greatly.
Game movie fail because they both fail at the "movie" part, as well as the "game" part. RE2 movie was ok on its own, and it did have a RE feel to it.

About the Nemesis scene, I would lie if I said I remember it well, but I don't remember being anoyed by it. A nemessis vs nemessis h2h would be ok? So why not have both nemessis experiment fight each other? I agree it might have been more fun if Nemessis was running after them with rocket launcher for the whole time, but the path they took doesnt destroy completely the movie.

As for Jill being useless, I seriously dont remember any of the character doing much in any of the game (havent played RE4 tho), they are mostly trying to survive and escape the place.
I think it might've been ok as just a movie, I can see why people might enjoy it (barely) but as an RE fan I was sodomized. Nemesis isn't hugely a hand to hand fighter, he might pick up a normal person and try to crush their head, or fling them across the floor. But mostly the only times he physically assaulted you was when you were too close for him to shoot with his rocklet launcher (and instead tried to smash your face in with it) or when his arm mutated into weird tentacle things.

The path they took didn't destroy the movie, as a movie, but it did completely rape the game aspect off it. another part that pissed me off was when they gave the helicopter scene to alice, and even the whole gun drop gas tank exploding thing (that was supposed to be claire's).

and the character's weren't at all useless or just "trying" to escape. In RE1 and 2 escaping would be going in the opposite direction that the character's headed in (as in, let's NOT explore this mansion/police station or this secret laboratory). Only in RE3 was the main purpose to gfto, and even then Jill had to stop Nemesis from raping her and eventually killed him using a huge fucking rail cannon (after owning him completely in a trash compactor place). And still, none of them just stood there with a handgun, jaws open staring at someone else fighting, they did a lot more than you seem to credit them for.

And I remember the PE movie now, but it wasn't really related to the game (as in, had Aya Brea in it, in new york etc). It was mostly about Eve? And Mitochondria, or maybe I think it was like a prelude/prequel to PE1.

Why Nemesis should be the way he is in game? That's what I'm saying. They aren't retelling the game story, they are simply rewriting a new one based on the game, and they did a fine job keeping enough element from it. It's not different than most any adaptation out there. Rocket launcher or h2h fighting isn't detail I care about, as long the scene work on its own without creating plothole. I didnt feel sodomized as a RE fan by such change. Anyway, Nemesis did use his rocket launcher against the police at one point, and that was more than enough for me.

Same goes for the helicopter scene. Why does it matter if Alice or Claire did it? It was obviously a reference to the game, but you're reading too much into it if you are annoyed by little details like this. I would understand if you were annoyed by those addition/change if they were destroying what you learned in the game, but those things are only technical details.

Dunno, as far as I can remember (been so long since I played 1 and 2), they were kinda forced to follow that path due to many circumstances and events. Their main objective was to leave racoon city after the game start, and they always got sidetracked. I wasn't saying they did nothing, but in the story, they are still not fighting a lot (from a gameplay perspective, it's obviously different).

Thing about that is, Claire never really had such a strong antagonist like Jill did. Nemesis was there throughout the entire game, hounding you at every oppurtunity. Claire never really had an enemy like that, everything else pretty much died when she met it (except William Birkin, but they can't exactly use him now can they). Worried that they will fuck up her character and make her as useless as Jill was in the second movie.
Mr. X is Claire B maybe? I kind of thought of the doctor in extinction as william birkin because it's kind of the same thing (getting infected by your own new strain of the virus) and he kind of resembled william. Just my thoughts.

Because the way they changed him wasn't for the better. No longer is he a crazed stalker relentlessly hunting down STARS members (sure, he started that way, but it didn't last long). Why do you think creating a plothole matters? They've fucked up enough as it is, they don't need to worry about plotholes (and when I saw the light in his eyes, and his memory flashbacks, I fucking facepalmed). Nemesis shot off his rocket once and got punched around a bit, he didn't mutate to his final form or use all the tricks up his sleave. If you say it's not different from most adaptions then why is it so hard to see why most people think the movie fucking sucks? They take something you enjoy and ram it up the ass with a spiked dildo. They didn't do a fine job of anything. There was Nemesis, Racoon City, Carlos (and Mercs, I think), Jill and a nuke. Only the nuke was used properly, they were just THERE, is just being there a good use of existing elements? I wouldn't think so.

It annoyed me because they took the scene from a character (which I like) and gave it to a character which I despise. That's enough reason for me.

Only forced because running away isn't exactly interesting. Even though they were trying to escape they still went in deeper and still kept on fighting to get to the truth. In order to get there they have to fight, even from a narrative perspective there has to be fighting to get there in the first place.. And ever since their first appearance in a Resident Evil game, all the characters have continued to fight to destroy umbrella. That also isn't running away.

I'll be sad to see another misuse of characters again... Although I remember seeing Mr. X in the trailer to RE:E, and he would be a good candidate for Claire's antagonist (now that I think back, Claire had a Tyrant/Mr. X type monster go after her in CV:X as well). I wonder why I didn't think about him, although the mixed scenarios for Claire and Leon confused me when it came to what was canon (was it Leon A > Claire B? That seemed to make more sense than Claire A > Leon B).

That's not true. While the movie wasnt the best thing ever, a lot of people still enjoyed it. Saying they weren't using those things properly is based on your expectation that the movie had to follow the game plot directly, because all those element were fine on their own. Again, not everyone care that much about those technicals details, only the most hardcore fan usually do, but those will never be happy anyway..

You did the same thing in Claymore thread when the anime took a different path that is working just as well.

I was fine with the first Resident Evil movie. If it's based on the game make it like the game, you can still add your own touch and flair in while keeping to the material. I didn't mind the first one because it was all original (well, that's a strong word, but still) stuff. You don't even have to follow it directly, but the whole mood and concepts that RE had were completely destroyed. Super human/mutant characters are NOT the protagonists in RE, normal people are (biologically speaking), since those characters make the real one's struggle completely pointless and pathetic. Overcoming the odds is not nearly as impressive.

I'm not even a hardcore RE fan (compared to Claymore, at least), but I would think you wouldn't have to be to see what a disappointment that movie was. If they wanted to have a RE movie with new characters it's easy enough to do that, follow the game path (not completely, since the hospital, clock tower and treatment plant aren't really needed) while keeping the characters together, keep the interaction while adding in the new characters and make them work together. The whole approach to the movie was done just so wrong.

Have you read the manga yet? Comparing the story, I would say it's working, but damn could it have been done better.

Let me explain, had the anime and manga diverged earlier, I would not have been pissed off. Like I said before, if you're gonna follow something like that SO faithfully and then randomly and suddenly split off like mad right near the end obviously people are gonna get pissed off. Especially when you love the original source material. Jill was more interesting than Alice, and it's not even about how they were as characters. It's what you do with them, when you have characters more than strong enough to stand on their own and then make them completely useless and only there for the sake of being there then, again, people are gonna feel cheated.

It's like getting another really cool game character (let's say, Dante or Solid Snake, and even Solid Snake had this happen to him in MGS2, and people weren't pleased) and then getting a completely new and random character that makes the old one completely useless and stupid.

doesn't make a difference to me in the least, as i look at it for what it is, an entirely different story being told.

And for me, Resident Evil is about a virus that turn people into Zombie, a city overwhelmed by zombie and a mysterious evil corporation that is making virus (especially that). The character story was always cliché and unimportant for me, it's the whole setting that make RE appealing, and they managed to do that well enough.

I liked the plot twist in MGS2 and Halo2, but I generally enjoy stuff like that. However, I don't think it apply here because RE: movie =/= RE: Games. They pressed the reset button and are starting from scratch in an alternate universe. The direction the story was taking near the end of the 2nd movie was pretty interesting too, but I can't comment until I watch the 3rd and final movie.

As long they maintain the post-apocalypse ambiance of resident evil, and uses the lore related to the series, I will enjoy those movies.

Big guy in trenchcoat hounded Leon and Claire all the time if you played the second disc. Not to the extent of Nemesis though.

    Re: Resident Evil: Extinction

Bump because I was finally able to see this.

I liked the movie for what it was. Misuse of Claire but w/e wasn't ever my favorite of characters. Setting was much like what was described in Resident Evil: Underworld (desert facility and all). Borrows a few things from Code veronica(tentacles and the mind stuff) which is ok, I really liked him turning into the original tyrant, was pretty cool imo. I thought the movie was a little short, and most of the characters that were from Apoc. died a little quickly.

I've heard they are filming a fourth already, no confirmation on that as I haven't actually looked. Hopefully they'll explain a little more about why she has the mind powers, that's still a big wth to me, though the crow scene was pretty funny.

I thought it was Mad Max with Zombies...ugh. Definitely rate it 2 > 1 > 3 in that order.

They made a Parasite Eve movie already, 8 years or so back in Japan, but it followed the novel and not the game. It was still pretty good if you wanna look into it.

If you seriously thought 3 was better than 2, in the sense of plot and action scenes, then there's little hope for you. At least 2 had Nemesis, what'd 3 have? Wesker? For like, 5 whole minutes and he just talked. 3 was Mad Max with zombies thrown in, 2 at least felt like Resident Evil.
