But they're never going to admit that - they'll just say they had reasonable suspicion. And this way, even though they didn't avoid the press, they're still, to an extent, in control of how the situation is reported. But only in a VERY small way, in the sense that they're able to issue a statement, instead of the girl going to the press and screaming "I was assaulted in an airport and held at gun point for no reason!"

She had some playdough in one of her hands and when asked by security what is that on her sweater, she didn't respond and walked away. Then the police were called in along with the bomb squad. Overreacting? Justifiable? That's really stupid to be doing that at an airport even if it were for expression. Yeah, she has the right to do it, doesn't mean she should.

Who walks around outside an airport with playdough in your hand and a graphics card on their chest anyways? That's really borderline pushing it.

it's not even a graphics card; it's a very basic circuitboard used by cse/ee students. You can put simple wires and chips on them.

where is the report of her walking away from security? Everything I've read said she was very compliant.

you are correct it is a breadboard with a bunch of LED's in it and a 9 volt battery which is why I was amazed at how stupidly the law enforcement acted and nearly caused a panic and turned this into such a huge deal. Anyone with half a brain can see that looks nothing like a bomb. I think that someone in charge of protecting the airport should be trained enough with respect to bombs and bomb materials to know the difference between this and the real thing once they get close enough to see it.

oh and from the articles I read maybe I misunderstood but it seemed like this wasn't a statement she was making, she was not trying to cause trouble in the airport, she made the shirt to show off to someone she was meeting at the airport. Kind of a way to say "hay look at this cool thing I learned how to make at school"

Just because it doesn't outright look like a bomb doesn't mean a damn thing. I think they were absolutely justified in what they did, perhaps actually charging her with a crime outside of stupidity is going to far. but they should absolutely have used the precautions they did until they were absolutely sure what it was.

There is no such thing as a stereotypical bomb anymore, it can look like anything. Something as innocent looking as a bottle of water could become a molotov, a box of pringles could have a pipe bomb inside, a small little breadboard or whatever that is could be attatched to C4. It doesn't take a huge motherboard with a CPU and RAM and a PSU to make a bomb. It takes a small electrical charge to set off the explosive and from the looks of that board you could argue the putty on it was potentially c4 or some kind of plastic explosive. Best not to take chances.

People are going to be less inconvenienced by being more precautionary to things like this than letting borderline things go through unchecked and someone actually does have some home-made bomb strapped to their chest that looks nothing like a typical bomb.

It's sad that 90% of the people will bitch to high heaven if this were a bomb and allowed to detonate. "My GOD! Security saw the bomb right there on her chest and they did NOTHING!" Actually, I remember something similar. It was something like, "My GOD! George Bush saw a Presidential Daily Brief that said 'Bin Laden determined to attack America' and he did NOTHING!!" Of course, then they get known as Truthers and fall under the category of Bush Allowed 9-11 to happen.

The other sad part is that if I could go back to 9-11 and warn security to arrest those 19 men with friggin box-cutters, you'd be screaming the loudest. "My GOD! All these men did was have box cutters! WTF could these guys do with just friggin BOX CUTTERS!!??! They were seriously overreacting!"

Next, security is not going to go to the girl with the bomb-looking-device strapped to her chest in a manner reminiscent of a Palestinian visiting a Jewish pizza parlor and ask her to kindly step over the bomb detecting equipment. "Pardon me, Miss? Would you mind if we borrowed that device strapped to your chest so we can test it for explosives? Oh, and if we could borrow that plastique looking stuff too, that would be great."

Finally, overreacting would have been closing down the airport... all airports for that matter immediately after putting a 7.62mm round through this stupid girl's skull from a distance. I have to hand it to the security team at this airport. It took some balls to be well within the blast radius of this girl when they told her to show her hands and hit the ground. They could of very easily been the first casualties of a major, multi-pronged attack. They didn't overreact. They underreacted! They saved this girls life and risked their own. They did not have to do that.
