What that NPC for anyways?
He's involved in a quest, "Enter The Gambler" I think. You talk to some NPCs at the Carpenter's Guild who are upset that Varchet is a lazy bastard. Go gamble with him, 5 gil bet. You roll dice, high roller wins. When you win, he says he'll go back to work (though he never moves!) and the grateful coworkers give you a KRT map.
That was entirely from memory, so a few details may be off.
sure they do, movalpolos thief exploit comes to mindOriginally Posted by Judai

Yes but you have to remember that for the quest you don't need any fame or lvl. You can't really kill Goblins outside Jeuno on a lvl1 character unfortunally.Killing gobs outside of Jeuno is faster.
No, he's probably right. RMT must've found a way to exploit him 5 gil at a time and SE put a stop to it before it got out of control. I applaud SE for their swift actions against RMT.
There definitely was ninja update going on, because when this happens SE usually doesn't do an all worlds maintenance, they do an all world maintenance on <zone> and tell everyone to leave.
Understand before reading this my knowledge of IT is limited, so this very well may be stupid.
Considering FFXI is over 5 years old, what were the standard back then? Pentium 4? With the Quad-Core Xeons based on Penryn coming out soon as well as all the other upgrades since then, I'm curious why reboot time is still so ass slow. Would an upgrade really require that much of an adjustment?
Someone already said they had removed the character before the maint, so either the quest was more hard-wired than we thought, or they did something else...
That is the answer to your question.Originally Posted by Epincus

i seemed to remember that you could trade him more gil than just 5. if i remember wrong, then i really have no clue how it was being exploited. it occurs to me that it might be possible to roll against him, then DC before he finishes his conversation, thus enabling you to keep the gil you'd wagered if you lost. if, however, you won, you could allow the conversation to continue. iirc, if you DC while trading an item for a quest but DC before it finishes (say you'd traded your lucky egg for your opo crown and DC mid cutscene) you keep the item you'd initially traded for that cutscene. i'd be curious if this works on the goblin you roll against for the ENM, as i could save a good chunk of change if i could just wager 1k over and over till i got the key item, not losing any money when i failed a roll. i will test it later if i remember (can't atm, at work,) though if someone's got the chance to test it earlier, i invite you to give it a go and save me the hassle.
You never traded him the gil manually. You talked to him the way you'd talk to any other NPC I believe, and then he'd prompt you to trade him 5g. I could be mistaken though.
could have sworn i traded him, but it's been so long... if i'm wrong, sorry about that. never claimed to be smart!
I just did this quest like... last week. . yeah I never really go to King Ranperre's Tomb, anywho, I traded D:

So, the RMT must have been gambling 5 gil at a time with the NPC, and if they were going to lose, they'd d/c and log back in until they won the bet. That way, they'd never lose, and flood the economy with gil!Originally Posted by Seyrr
