How do you divide?

Kinda weird question, but earlier I was thinking about how people in the US do division differently than how I did back in Brasil, and I was wondering how the rest of the world did it.

I know most of Europe writes their 7's with the dash, like I did back in Brasil, so I'm curious if this is like that, or if this way of division is just some weird brasilian only thing.

This is more aimed at non-Americans, cause I already know how they teach it in the US <.<

I put dashes in my sevens when doing formal writing, but when jotting notes or number crunching, i do not put dashes >.> Never lived outside of KY

I uh... do most division in my head. It's just a process of reducing fractions, and then I leave my final answer in fraction form. I would never actually do long division anymore, but if I were I do it the American way that's already stated.

I do know that the president of my college learned it that way that the OP posted. He grew up in Lebanon but also went to school in Japan at some point, so I'm not sure where he learned it; possibly both.

Hell yea, even odd numbers and dividing by fractions are easy if you separate out the numbers in your head. Until you're asked to divide equations using long division when you haven't used it in 12 years - funniest moment of my first degree was 100 engineers not being able to use long division, and I had to ask my 13 year old niece how it worked.

Wow, I totally forgot I learned how to divide that way about 8 years ago. Makes me feel old, actually. God, I hate these moments.

Anyhow, yeah, its a pretty sweet way to do it, I don't remember how, but remember it being pretty easy. Then again, the american style is pretty easy as well, it just reduces it into subtraction that takes a lot of space.

I meant how you learned to divide many years ago, not how you divide now. <_< I'm curious how different countries taught this back in elementary school.

And I know it's the same thing, but the positioning is different because it's a different way of writing it, just like how 7 without the dash and with the dash mean the same thing.
