How do you divide?

Division is overrated, I'd much rather multiply...


Really though I do it in my head by throwing numbers at the problem til one sticks, do the same with all other math, which really pissed my teachers off.

'I don't have any, is the answer right?'

"Yeah, but you need to show your work."

'How I arrived at this answer is beside the point, it's right so let's just drop it and move on.'

For some reason the first two things that pop into my mind when thinking about RPN are Hewlett-Packard calculators and pocket protectors. Nerds!

Fuck statistics. I am taking that class and I really should pay more attention. I go into class and he's talking about probability and stuff and I just didn't get it at all... It seemed like there was a lot more words then needed.. The stuff is easy... I just dunno what the fuck any of it means. p(~A|B) + P(A|~B) and shit like that.. Anyone know any sites that explains it a little better <.<?

I generally opt for the "use a calculator" option, but otherwise I have to teach it the way they like it in UK schools these days, which is odd, to say the least.

Starts off with the kids doing a number line of the number you're wanting to divide

http://www.croydonmaths.org.uk/image...son%20line.gif and subtract the number you're dividing by repeatedly... so 18 divided by 4= 4 lots of 4, and 2 left over.

Then they set it out vertically... like a subtraction sum underneath the division bit, so 18 divided by 4

...... until they can tell you they took away x lots of 4 and had x left.

And then you break it into bigger lumps, so might be taking 10x4 (40) away at a time.... it kind of makes people start scratching their heads if they've never seen it before.

Hell yea, even odd numbers and dividing by fractions are easy if you separate out the numbers in your head. Until you're asked to divide equations using long division when you haven't used it in 12 years - funniest moment of my first degree was 100 engineers not being able to use long division, and I had to ask my 13 year old niece how it worked.

But in ur head ftw, unless it's really big lol, then I use a calculator <<;
