Although Amarr are FOTM, they also require tons of training to be good. They use lasers which have the best range for their closest range ( Fit pulse on a BS and you can hit out to 40km) Fit blasters on a BS and you'll be lucky to hit at 10km. My first character was Gallente, and by the time i had 4mil skill points i had around 200 solo kills in my Ishkur.
It's an Assualt Frigate that can use 5 light drones leaving you to fit a nice tank on it or go pure DPS, loved the little thing
The main problem you'll run into with Amarr missions as an Amarrian is NPC types on missions. You tend to get quite alot of Guristas and Angel missions which are weak to Kinetic and Explosive damage (Amarrs lasers are EM / Thermal) so alot of Amarr mission runners cross train Minnimatar aswell. Caldari are hands down the best mission runners purely because they can use any damage type just by switching missiles.
Amarr do have some nice missile based ships (Sac HAC & the other Command Ship). So if you want to run missions you can always go Caldari and jump in a Drake whilst you get your missile skills up, then cross train into Amarr whilst you use the Drake to mission in whilst doing so.
If you want to solo pvp, get yourself into a Ishkur or Wolf. A friend flys around in a Wolf (20 mil cost to buy and fit) atm in 0.0 killing what he can. He has many Vagabond kills (100 million HACs) Battlecruisers, Interceptors and even Rapier kills.
He doesn't have alot of SP compared to those he kills, but he proves just how versatile EvE is and what can be accomplished.
