So I started playing. Spent a week to get into a Thrasher. Decided I wanted to get a Hulk and do..whatever Hulks do. Jesus fucking christ 150-180 days of skill training?!

You step up into a Hulk, work your way from the lower mining ships. You should get support skills to, to increase the m^3 ANY of your ships can mine.
(To shave time, get some +3 implants, and respec your attributes to favor the skills needed for the Hulk, evemon can help you with that.)
Lastly, Hulks have no tank. Griefers will pop you just to make you cry.

    Spoiler: show
    Barge in on me

Changing the mining frigates to have combat roles made us realize that we need something to replace them. Which lead us to realize how outdated mining barges are. That’s something we want to tackle over the course of the summer as well.
Our goal is simple: each and every single mining barge (and their tech 2 variant) should have an appealing role, and not just be a stepping stone on the way to something better. Players should'nt only aim for the Hulk without considering anything else when doing some hard rock and roll mining. That means playing with the following variables:

    • Mining output: first and most visible balancing factor, plan is to increase all barge mining output to be within an acceptable margin of the Hulk, not miles behind as it is currently.
    • Autonomy: mining barges should have proper cargo holds so they not always have to rely on jet cans (without turning them into industrials however). That means giving them large, specialized ore bays where all the ore will automatically go into when mining.
    • Resilience: another point is to give some of them proper EHP not to be one-shot by anything that even remotely sneezes on them.

As a result we thus get:

    • New ORE frig: we want this ship to replace current mining frigates as low barrier of entry vessel, but also fulfill high-end gameplay expectations by providing a very mobile platform for mining in hostile space. Lowest mining output, decent ore bay, little to no resilience.
    • Procurer/Skiff: primarily made for self-defense. Better mining rate than the ORE frig, good ore bay, but capable of having battleship-like EHP.
    • Retriever/Mackinaw: made for self-reliance. Has the largest ore bay, similear to the size of a jet can, second best mining output but less EHP than the procurer mining barge.
    • Covetor/hulk: ore bay is identical to its current cargo hold, little to average EHP, but best mining output. Basically made for group operations when players have industrials and protection to back them up.

Before we forget, part of what players now call “tiericide” is to look at skill requirements. We are not pleased with how they work specifically with this ship class, since the Hulk is currently only a few hours away from the Covetor in terms of skill training. That is why, after the change, all tech 1 mining barges will now only require the Mining Barge Skill at level 1.
We will most likely add the new ORE frigate skill at 4 as a Mining Barge nested prerequisite though, but remember our motto: if you could fly it before, you can fly it now.
Due to how nested skill requirements work, players who already have the mining barge skill trained WON'T need to train the ORE frigate skill to keep flying their Covetor for example.

With evemon it showed I could get into a Hulk as early as 45 days, but the support skills is whats going to take up all my time so I don't get insta-gibbed the moment I undock. I currently have +3 implants and going to a +5 on Int/Memory will cut 20 days, and remapping will cut off another 10 days bringing me down to 150 days of skill training. Post-Hulkageddon and the announcement to make more viable mining ships should be exciting.

Always wished mining didn't suck. Back when I played I was a carebear of course, but I remember many years ago when I originally heard about EVE Online. I didn't know much, but I rememeber my naieve little brain imagining myself flying around asteroid belts scanning for ores and setting up an industry.

Then I actually played the game ... and ... well, I'm sure you know the rest.

And lets face it, there is no shortage of indutstial minded people in the game. I can understand them ignoring mining and many other industrial flaws if everybody only cared about the pew-pew, but there's no shortage of people who thrive solely on industry, trade, hauling, all that fun not pew-pew combat stuff. It always boggled my mind that they didn't have a team set up solely for industrial/mining development since day 1.

I spent my 3 years of playing EVE doing almost nothing but industrial stuff. Yes, I started out in a frigate and mined and mined and mi...zzzzzzzzzz. This was when a player started with 18k skill points (you start with about 1 million now) so I had ZERO support skills. My first month of the game was brutal to say the least. My advice to anyone trying the game out: join a player corp as soon as you can. The only times I ever took breaks from EVE was when I was trying to do solo stuff. Even if you make 3-4 friends who you play with, it makes the game infinitely better.

Don't fret, after about 3-4 months and a few dozen custom made excel spreadsheets, industry in Eve becomes a breeze

Omw to a Hulk now. ISK is the only thing stopping me from getting my Exhumer Skill, and the ship itself. All my other skills are already there.

Anyone try out RvB? I've got a low sp alt (1.5m) that I've been thinking of putting in there and messing around. I have a feeling if I do that I'm going to get frustrated and stick one of my higher SP characters there to make up for it.

(12:54:09 PM) vile_rat: assuming we don't die tonight. We saw one of our 'police' that guard the compound taking pictures

The above were VR's last words in EVE. You never know when your time will be up. Always cherish every moment and value the people in your life. Friendship is magic. #YOLO #noregrets

To those who don't play EVE, the tiny dots of light inside the bubbles are individual players paying their respects by lighting a "candle" using the in-game cynosural field item.

If your not purple, your probably going to be fired upon. (seems to be mostly happening in low sec and null)

Some of you already know, but a pilot was killed in RL during the attack on the US Consulate in Libya.

Sean Smith was the primary diplomatic liaison for the Goons, and shaped the political landscape of all of nullsec.

In his honour there will be widespread orchestrated chaos tonight. Pilots will be forming fleets and attacking anything not purple to them. It is highly recommended that noncombatants remain docked up during this memorial service.
