So what's the learning curve with Eve these days? Horrifying?
Is it possible to get anything interesting done while playing casually?

This is what happens when you approach EVE like any other MMO. If you try to absorb the entirety of a sandbox game your head WILL asplode. But things like EVE-UNI, lurking channels/forum, and having the balls to just go out and do something crazy helps cut the curve down.
Example, I'm enjoying casual mining in nullsec and making around a billion isk per month (roughly enough to pay for two months of sub). Before that I was in a WH corp and blew shit up with a Tengu and was making great money.

That is actually really good advice. CCP has change the new player experience ALOT in recent years where I think they teach you the game very well. Obviously with any game there is a time investment involved, but you can definitely play Eve causally. Joining something like RVB or Eve Uni for casual play is a good idea. What it really comes down to is what you want to do in game. My corp/alliance, while they may seem like tryhards, are actually very casual. We have fleets going all the time and you can join if you please. Obviously they want people to keep up with PVP but I've never been told I need X amount of kills a month or I get the boot.

This is why Eve Devs > any other devs:

Love companies who embrace player content.
Oh and this:

Dev response to a person complaining it's too easy to steal from corps in eve/dust.
This was in one of those dev posts that came out, but I think the video needs some separate love.
As a non-EVE player, this crap was jaw dropping awesome.
According to the comments section on the PC Gamer article, this server lag was so tremendous that it crashed the Dust 514 server.
That's not the case, one of the battle servers took a dive, but it just happened to happen at the same time.

Also, to the EVE side players of BG, it looks like the next few months are going to involve EVE/DUST live events. Currently Caldari, but I have the feeling it may pop from faction to faction.Just a heads up, we just lost part of the cluster so you may have been disconnected. Things should be coming back online now though so you can reconnect straight away.
Edit: The fleet fight last night should not have affected DUST at all, however we have been diagnosing some growing pains of our own. So probably just coincidence.

Over the next few months, the storyline of New Eden will be evolving in such a way that it effectively dovetails the two games together in one persistent, growing universe. There will be events in both DUST and EVE which will reflect this.
The two games are very much entwined, and are intrinsically linked via backstory already, but we still have a very strong focus on bringing them even closer together.
The vision is a single living, breathing, sci-fi universe, that can be viewed through two windows. These two windows are DUST and EVE, which provide two very different views of New Eden through which players can interact with one persistent universe.
In terms of events, the DUST team are working very hard to put together a solid experience for those players who are interacting with New Eden through DUST, and are collaborating very closely with the EVE Live Events team (which I lead) to make sure that things sync up and people have an awesome experience as we bring the two games closer together.
I don't know, fighting 3:1 I think we did well
