Honest question.

Am I wrong in believing there's no practical way to obtain someone's account information other than:

1) Agreeing to download some kind of a program.
2) Having your account information in one form of another, placed some place over the internet (whether in a PM, post, IM, e-mail, /tell, whatever).

Technically yes, practically no, but last I checked option 2 was never killed as a possibility.

How isn't it? If you've never put it over the internet through any of those or other options, then it just isn't there. And nothing outside of hacking SE directly would change that, which isn't a practical option.

2 was never killed as a possibility, it's very likely every single last one of the people who lost their accounts PMed eachother the info, no one in this topic at all has denied such a thing.

I failed to clarify but I'm not talking in regards to this thread at all. I'm talking more in a general sense about just the topic of hacking. Point I'm trying to show being, you can't just go and hack any person you want to. Meaning most people's accounts here shouldn't be in jeopardy if they wanted to post anything, assuming they took the proper precautions.

Being a language guy I gotta comment on the irony side-argument.

The "proper" meaning of irony is basically doing something with one intention that produces a different result, that result being opposite, or close to opposite of what was intended.


If Taj had nothing to do with it, then he simply did some stuff for the guy with the intention of being a nice guy, or at least looking like a nice guy, but instead resulted in him looking like a bad guy to people outside the situation.


That is, in fact, a very good (albeit not perfect) example of irony. Someone arguing that it's not is also incredibly ironic, as it's a commonly misunderstood term, people are aware of this, and he was trying to "correct" someone but instead showed an improper understanding of the term. Or maybe not even a misunderstanding of the term, but a lack of the critical thinking to see it.

Im pretty sure that it wasn't Kalia/Divisortheory because my main accounts are still with me, and the first person Kalia probably would have gone after would be me, so theres my proof, take it or leave it.

Anyway, one of the accounts I had been using (Koul) and still had my credit card info on it did get hacked (PM'd info to me so thats probably how it happened - looking back, probably not the best thing to do, but who plans on people hacking your forums and stealing your stuff? oh well, hindsight is 20/20)

This really doesn't have much to do with this topic, but I got to play on Leviathan server for about 45 minutes (during which time I helped some nice people do their AF and joined a cool social linkshell) everyone on Levi was real nice and sympathetic of the entire situation, so thank you to all the people I talked to. I'm actually thinking of going to Leviathan with my other accounts till the 90 days are up if Sarah and Garret don't get the green light from SE to come back. Would have been nice for the hacker to send all the accounts to Leviathan so we could have moved there as an LS, but I guess thats too much to ask.

That's nice, your point was flawed using an example you stated. You can say they're not sure the person can't find out who they are but to them all that matters is they believe it. It's not a given it wasn't a proxy, and I provided a solid example for why it likely was. Their lengths don't have to be smart to you.

It is academic, I still think that if you're truly afraid for your accounts, then you should do as little as possible to paint yourself as a target, and that includes making anon forum posts, no matter how obfuscated you make them.
