I figured it out after the clues, someone from Canada or via a canada proxy logged into my forums account and performed a database backup to their local machine.

It was a strong password, so I am not sure how it was obtained.....

Well, I actually quoted that for reference to how I feel about the issue. You can be nice and still fuck up. I did. Mistakes doesn't make someone inherently bad.

And for the record, he does now. He didn't before. He's human, he doesn't want to see people he cares about hurt over this but ultimately he's pissed that I let it happen.

I do care. What people in general think, I don't care too much. But you're an insanely nice guy, Sas, so I'm somewhat more inclined to care about how you feel. But a lot of people knew and didn't say anything. People generally don't like ousting friends, esp without personal involvement.

ok, saying it right now so people stop bugging me about this shit

Taj did NOT get a password database from BG forums, we run phpbb3 and an encrypted database with lots of important words I dont understand setup for security, I cant even log into the standard FTP without using some sort of super secure FTP client (its a fucking hassle to use too). Only 4 people have access to that FTP, only one person (our head admin) is able to even log in and mess with the server, and from what Im told its secure enough to keep about anything out and has a non-normal interface. The router is set to force any sort of attempts to brute force to lock out after a number of unsuccessful entries of a password for 30 minutes (admin locked himself out once).

So yeah, whatever Taj did to get in, he did of his own knowledge and his own holes he found in the code of whatever forum software you use. We run PHPbb3, we keep it updated, we run extra security (especially after our last server incident where we lost a month), we keep shit locked up tight. It will protect you against a lot of stuff, it wont protect you from shitty fucking passwords, use comment sense, my current favorite number is 13, it involves alternating caps, numbers, and characters.
