I was napping (and inadvertently sleeping through Dynamis) when all this shit came to light. This thing was like six pages long at most when I went to sleep. ._. So do not take my silence as anything more than I had been sleeping and now have had to read 17 pages to catch up and try and wrap my head around this.

I'm so honored everyone is so in anticipation of what I have to say.


My opinion? He fucked up. Big time.

I won't say I wasn't thinking he could have done this, but in all truth I did not feel he had it in him. So chalk it up to bad judgment. I knew he'd done a few things before just because he could, even beyond what he published here, but nothing would have led me to believe this. It's why I was leaning towards the frame upon first read. Though obviously, had I been awake as more things came to light, that would have been harder and harder to continue to hold on to.

Going back, I'd still defend him regarding the wiki. I know the way he obtained his information was wrong, but it's hard to denounce someone on a mission of truth. The many heroes in history we laud today were not all exactly saints.

This was most definitely a step too far. It does not mean I am worried about my own security, however, in any manner (especially with Windower). He's still a person, he still needs friends. I've already chatted with him, and when he admitted that he feels perhaps he is just inherently bad, I suggested he find someone to talk to, on a professional level. No one should feel like they are inherently bad.

People need to learn their boundaries. I have problems with this too, I tend to be too nosy. And have been known to gossip. I'm sure Vagus and Kaeko will add their two cents on that remark. ;P

I wish to remind everyone, however, that two wrongs do not make a right (a commonly used phrase now used in a slightly different manner). Just because Taj did this does not in any way, shape, or form vindicate the moderators of the wiki or those who were found out for RMT in this mess; they are not innocent because Taj fucked up. On the converse (using the phrase in its more typical manner), just because they did those things does not make Taj's actions right, most especially this latest egregious act.

All in all, and no offense to the teenagers, or to Taj frankly, but in the end we are reminded that Taj is still, basically, just a kid. There's a lot of maturity and responsibility wanting, and hopefully that'll come relatively soon, before he is legally an adult. Hopefully he will learn these boundaries and be able to use his knowledge and abilities in a manner that can benefit society in the long run.

I empathize greatly with those whose characters were compromised, it is truly a shame that you had to be involved in this. From what I hear, most everything was recovered. For those who were unwittingly involved (e.g., Ryko), I also feel for you and do not wish that sort of moral dilemma on anyone. For those who tried to convince Taj he was making a bad judgment call, only to be ignored, do not take it as any sort of reason to ever stop trying to keep yourself and people you know on the right path. For those who encouraged it with silence or assistance, I hope you also learn from this.

Also, please don't impeach Aurik. He was only defending Taj's sixth amendment rights. ;P

Taj did NOT get a password database from BG forums, we run phpbb3 and an encrypted database with lots of important words I dont understand setup for security, I cant even log into the standard FTP without using some sort of super secure FTP client (its a fucking hassle to use too). Only 4 people have access to that FTP, only one person (our head admin) is able to even log in and mess with the server, and from what Im told its secure enough to keep about anything out and has a non-normal interface. The router is set to force any sort of attempts to brute force to lock out after a number of unsuccessful entries of a password for 30 minutes (admin locked himself out once).

So yeah, whatever Taj did to get in, he did of his own knowledge and his own holes he found in the code of whatever forum software you use. We run PHPbb3, we keep it updated, we run extra security (especially after our last server incident where we lost a month), we keep shit locked up tight. It will protect you against a lot of stuff, it wont protect you from shitty fucking passwords, use comment sense, my current favorite number is 13, it involves alternating caps, numbers, and characters.

I don't have a lot of phpbb3 experience, but does it protect against brute force hacks?

We (my friend and I in high school) would routinely brute force the school's network for shits because they had no protection. We would set up one entire room (which had about 20 comps) and it wouldn't take more than 10 mins with them all running. Hell I have three working comps in my house, which is fairly common among the kind of people who would want to or know how to utilize such tactics. Might not take more than a day to get a pass if there's no protection. I haven't tried it with these three, only mostly with the school's since it was so easy.

First you defended him for hacking a gilbuyer to expose them when you bought gil. Then you laugh at his FFXI Encyclopedia antics because they "had it coming." Now two wrongs don't make a right?

My passwords are not shitty, atleast for forum admin accounts etc. The problem here is that BG becomes the center of the problem, the people that the led off from all had accounts here. Sadly, like I said in my PM, my ultima login and BG login were the same unintentionally... but for sure, it was not a weak password. Our VB was patched and generally well protected, I did not apply the same tight rules to that server as I do for my work enviroment, but I work for finanical groups.... a gaming forum server isnt what I considered top-target-material... although we have been attacked by china gateways numbers of times, seems someone likes to try anyway.

Anyway, I dont see where else he would have gotten the password since that password is not used but only in two places.
