Hacking people's accounts for RMT actions 3 years ago doesn't justify what has been done.

These are horrible actions. If I was defending or a friend of Taj, I would probably loose all faith in him at this point.

While I see why you think that thats where the gil was being used, you need to get the facts and dates straight before you believe that. When Taj posted "I KNOW WHERE THE MISSING 2K WENT", he even said "not really". Just so happened that the SS's added up to approximately 2k-ish.

If DT used donation money to fund the relic, I'd agree that its pretty messed up. But RMTing his own money is different.

I tthink the moral of this story is that vigilantism is wrong and the end doesn't justify the means. There are procedures to punish people who break the rules for a reason.

I think the end sometimes justifies the means. In my opinion it was good to expose Ganiman for what he was. The thing with DT was grey-area (exposing him as a gilbuyer was tangential to the real issue), and this business with Ultima is just plain wrong.

So anyways, I've been wondering about something..

What if the 9 accounts were not just innocent players? What I mean to say is, if they were all well known RMTers/botters/thieves, whatever would that have justified what Taj did? Would everyone be praising himself instead right now? Because that seems to be the problem with most people from what I'm reading. That rather than the stealing of accounts, its only wrong because the victims were ... 'innocent people who had nothing to do with it' as people are putting it(Not saying they aren't, just wondering how peoples reactions would differ if that were not the case).

Anyway, page 40, almost there.

For the majority of the people here, I'd say if that were the case, Taj's cult following would continue as it always has. As has been said before, he'd be the Robin Hood of BG/FFXI, slapped on the wrist for some shady work but ultimately lauded as a hero.

That, of course, is not the case. Even if you want to lynch someone for buying a handful of gil 3 years ago, you're still leaving 8 people who were innocent bystanders completely out to dry. Therefore, Taj is an attention-craving little child, as everyone already knew, but it's no longer strictly for the lulz.

And I will be a fucking monkey's uncle if 95% of the people playing the "that's wut you get for giving out your password lawl" card haven't shared their info with anyone. No, it wasn't the brightest thing to do it via PM, but lets face it, how many times has a supposedly safe forum been accessed illegally and people's info been taken from that? You all sound like a bunch of SE customer support peons making excuses why nothing should be done about this, when it's obviously fucked up and would take very little effort to fix.

Yah basically. I stood up for dude for what he did to FFXIclopedia-- I still think they are douches. At this point however, it's just fucked up what Taj did. And I think Lynsy would be an awesome Puppetmaster, from Joe's earlier IRC post.

I never said anything about DT and the gil buying or relic or whatever, I don't care about that one bit. If i'm guilty of anything it's overestimating DT's involvement with the wiki group, he was fairly outspoken in defending them and their actions which leads me to believe he knew full well what was going on and kept quiet about it. I thought it obvious taj was joking that is where the money went, that's not what i ever had issue with. I felt that his involvement in the wiki was pretty damn low considering hundreds of people got screwed out of thousands of dollars. Again, if i'm guilty of anything it's overestimating his involvement in that issue.

Secondly, I thought it was said somewhere earlier that only 1 person had their CC used to cover the cost of the server transfers. Doesn't that mean that someone else had to cover the cost of the transfers if it wasn't exclusively on the account holders CC's? $25x8 is a decent chunk of money to stick on one credit card 'just because you can'. Especially now that the accounts have been returned to the real owners and it seems very little 'profit' has been made ingame.

I see 2 possibilities here:

1) He decided that this prank was worth $200 and is paying for it himself (or found someone willing to pay for it).
or
2) He fraudulently charged $200 worth of fees to someone else's credit card, where they will likely be reversed (most cards have $0 liability these days) and the owners of the compromised accounts will end up having to pay for both the charge back and the transfer back (so $50 each assuming SE doesn't assess any fees for the charge back).

I'd like to be able to say that I thought it was the former, but my gut tells me it's the latter.

He's been banned from IRC, but it's really not worth deleting his account. You cannot ban every proxy on the planet, thus he'd be able to sign up repeatedly. At least when posting from the 'Taj' account we know it's him.

If this is really the case, then it is a huge fucking cop-out. Condemning this kind of behavior by giving him a different custom forum title is pretty ridiculous.

Atleast on my account, the payment info was not changed, so when the request was made for server transfer to HADES... it auto-billed my credit card that was on the POL account.

I think only a couple of the accounts had payment info changed... but not sure if that was before or after the transfer.

nay, i did it the night transfers came out just to change my name, no relation, i have however sent my strategy to 2 people that got hacked so far, hoping it helps

Giving out account info to friends shouldnt be any worse than giving a friend keys to your house so they can feed your cat while you're on vacation. I dont think its unreasonable that people have 1 trustworthy person who could log onto their account and use for ls or to do them a favor while they arent around. I got burned a long time ago for giving out account info, but in hindsight it was foolish because it was basically on the grounds that they were in my ls and we were both in ls together for a long time. Even after that happening there is a handful of people I've played ffxi with for well over 3 years now, and I've let them log on my account even since replacing most rare/ex gear that was dropped before, including adaberk. I think if you cant trust ANYONE you are playing with, then why play with them or play at all.
