Hmm... Time Mage = TMM because? Lets see, all of the other "Mage" jobs... WHM BLM RDM. All start with 2 consenants followed by the letter M for the 2nd word. Yeah, totally doesn't fit.
Not all the "Mage" jobs. Blue Mage doesn't follow that pattern.

Mimes do not exist ingame. If you try to make some argument that some other job encompasses it, that's about as retarded as when people said SE would never add BLU because its basically the same as BST.

I think they must not know what Mime is.

fyi, Mime is a party member that copies the abilities and spells of other party members. It's in several FF games, and in no way in this one. (Well, I think one of the troupe members is a mime, but not in the combat sense. If they did add Mime, I wouldn't be surprised if the quest giver was an ancestor of them.)

Ah, a good point. At any rate the sentiment of my argument stands, "TMM" is an acceptable and precedented abbreviation.

    Crap.

We're probably not getting more than 2 jobs in WotG (3 is possible, but unlikely.) So even if those are real, they'll have more than enough time to rethink them, making these potentially invalid.

Re: Rumours about new job abbreviation

I've always joked that Square should make a job called Civilian, with CIV as the abbreviation. It would have no abilities, only be able to use fists, knives, and guns (all with D skill), and it would not be able to sub anything. Square would then give it several sets of exclusive statless "armor" that serve only to give it appearance, with all other armor being locked. Have themes like baseball fan, motorcycle leather, punk, emo, metalhead, a Blues Brothers style black suit with fedora, and other real world themes. At level 75, the player will be able to assign the appearance of the armor to carry across to all jobs and armor they use (i.e. be wearing a gothic lolita dress while you're really wearing an Adaman Hauberk). The joke would be that even though such a job would be vapid as hell, utterly useless, and be a total leech in experience, people would level it anyway because much of what this game is about is just simply looking good.

Elvaan Woman, a mime, travels with the Troupe Valerino.
But as pointed out, it's not the same kind of mime. I wouldn't be surprised if they changed the name of the combat-type Mime to Emulator because the FFXI people seem to be sensitive to the connotation of names. They named Pirate Corsair because of the connotation of the name, and several people have expressed confusion and disdain for the name Mime. They associate it with the conventional mime.

I remember SE stating the reason for the name of Corsair was because it was originally supposed to be Gambler, but they changed it due to Western connotations (they didn't want anyone's parents to be pissed because their kid was playing something that "promoted gambling", or whatever). Corsair is basically just another word for pirate anyway, although a specific type of pirate.

Who the heck is confused by Mime anyway? Its what its been called in FF before, and the meaning makes perfect sense considering what it does. I highly doubt we'll ever get Mime anyway, it would be completely worthless within an online game such as this.

The bit on the Gambler job. This isn't the first time Gambler has been localized to be more family friendly. FFX-2's Lady Luck Dressphere was originally named Gambler in the Japanese version too. However, since this game tends to standardize between both language fronts, they musta chosen Corsair as an in-between.

The people who are confused about Mime obviously don't know the job we are referencing (from FFV, VI, tactics). It also appeared as a Materia in FFVII and a tech called Copycat in FFX. The bigger issue isn't what its defined as but rather how it would work in FFXI's game mechanics/balancing if it were introduced

Re: Rumours about new job abbreviation

if.. just IF, time mage were a job.. there would be a few ways to look at its abbreviation.. from the existing trends..

    1) the mage job trend. Jobs that have "Mage" in them tend to have the last letter of the abbreviation as M.
    as in RDM, WHM, BLM.
Blue Mage doesn't follow this rule because if it does, it becomes BLM, which is already taken.

IF Time Mage followed this, then TMM would be it.

    2) the no vowel trend. Many jobs abbreviations are composed by taking the first 3 letters of the job which do not include vowels.

THF, MNK, PLD, DRK, BST, RNG, BRD, DRG, and SMN adhere to this rule.
However, SMN is unique because Summoner should become SMM, so its possible that there may be another "rule" in their naming that doesnt allow 2 letters to be placed side by side.

IF Time Mage followed this, then TMG would be it, to avoid 2 Ms from being placed together.

    3) the first 3 letters trend. Some jobs abbreviations just take the first 3 letters of the job name. These are the only ones which have vowels in them...

WAR, NIN, SAM, BLU, COR, PUP.
note that BLU is the only -mage job to use this naming trend.

If Time MAge followed this, then TIM is most likely.

Therefore, we have TMG, TIM and TMM. TMM doesn't seem likely cos SMN isn' SMM, even if it were named by a different convention, so.. we have TMG or TIM.. probably.

edit: and i dont know why i even wrote this, i don't think Time mage will be a new job.

Ah, my mistake on the Pirate/Corsair thing I guess.

Anyway, a lot of people just think the name Mime is stupid. Personally I'd much prefer it to whatever other name they could cook up. As for being a balanced asset to FFXI, it certainly could be.

Re: Rumours about new job abbreviation

Everything that I have seen so far about this expansion is that it's going to be quite epic in terms of what it's going to introduce to us. They said before it's going to add about as many zones as were originally released (or was it with RoZ, too?). They also showed off a lot of really cool monsters to fight against. A new besieged-like event, probably related to attacks on the 3 nations (which would be amazing, imo). The storyline looks to be absolutely breathtaking, giving us some amazing backstory to a lot of stuff we've been encountering for years now. And, confirmed "more than 1" job.

It's entirely possible that SE just wants to absolutely blow us away with this expansion, so more than 3 jobs sounds like it's right up that alley. I'm not saying that I am sure there's going to be more than 3, or even 3, but it seems just as likely there will be more.

Re: Rumours about new job abbreviation

Anyone have the feeling that they are adding significantly more jobs than normal?

Everytime SE reps are asked how many jobs, they laugh and always say "More than 1" in a sort of "we have a mind blowing figure, but we want it to surprise people,"-way. Plus, new jobs spur low level economy, "low level content", and I dare to say excitement in playing the game?

While it would deviate from the norm, all the real "successfull" expansions produced jobs, despite the mission difficulty aspect.

FFXI's population is in the decline, 2 jobs would be nothing spectacular. 3 seems near minimum. 4 roles in a party situation (healer, support, tank, DD). Tank and healer would be welcomed easily. So 4 sounds nice

Re: Rumours about new job abbreviation

is it sad that the only thing that I could think about this entire thread is

    DAN = http://welcomeconsumer.com/wp-conten...uzzle_vote.jpg

That and I keep thinking that there is only 2 jobs this time around. Dancer, and one job that will be announced the at the fanfest. Now could they announce more between now and then, which is a little under 2 months, I sure hope so along with a ton of new content. But until a SE employee or a credible news source announce a new job. So tell then I'm only going to comment on Dancer, which I think is going to be Dnc, but that's just my thought about it.

    btw Emu = http://www.jdmpics.com/animals/emu-2.jpg
yeah I know it's been done before, but if this is a job and it is the abbreviation for it, you know that its never going to be able to live it down.
