Some categories seem to have the name plural (bombs, etc.), with the others singular (aern, etc.). What's going to be the standard? Sorry if I missed this.

Singular should probably the standard.
exception for mob types that are obviously collections? (triple)bats etc.
although I haven't heard for sure one way or the other.
I'll go ahead and say this should be the standardOriginally Posted by Amele
What I'm really confused about is duplicate HNMs. Like Cerberus vs Freke. Cerberus is naturally thought as a HNM named Cerberus, but he's actually a monster type when you think about it.
Their family is called "bat trio" in Pankration.Originally Posted by Amele
Edit: nvm.
excellent!~ then we don't have to worry about triple bats being an exceptionOriginally Posted by Sagacious Sundi
as for monster versus family name, it happens alot (colibri -> what does pankration call this family?)
although I wonder how much of that is us just not knowing the actual family name? (cerberus, behemoth, etc) hell, what's a crawler even officially in pankration?
I must research tonight!
The .dats for Pankration call their families Cerberus, Behemoth, etc. Even though we can't use them, they're still in the .dats as if we could. For example, the official family name for Tiger is "Tiger Uppercut". Unless that part of the .dat was changed in the patch, but I haven't checked lately.Originally Posted by Amele
the family name is tiger uppercut? that doesn't make sense (or do you mean their racial special move is called 'tiger uppercut'?)
.dats of pankration family names would be fine with me as a basis for making decisions on difficult mob groups.
I do like that family names are categories thus far, though; it makes it easier to disambiguate between cerberus and cerberus when it's category:cerberus for the family.
Well, I was just being funny/stupid because the pre-release Pankration .dat for Tiger family does actually say "Tiger Uppercut", but I don't think anyone actually intends to call them that. It may have been fixed when Pankration was officially introduced. Maybe it was just a bad case of engrish, and nobody double-checked the translation work for that patch. Pankration wasn't officially open yet, so maybe they just didn't feel the need to correct it.Originally Posted by Amele
if it is the actual name of the family group in the .dat still; it should show up in the family name of any tiger pets.Originally Posted by Khamsin
anyone have a tiger pet they can let us know about? (I'm all for using Tiger Uppercut as the actual family name, with a note about why if it's the case; we can always redirect "Tiger" to it and people might learn some new trivia about XI)
Kinda sounds like "Smithers! Release the hounds!" string table entry present in most/every zone's string table>_>
Well, I know they changed stuff like "gigant toad" to doomed, "tri-bats" (I think) to bat trio, and "mumbo jumbo" to acrolith. (That's right, I went there.)Originally Posted by Amele
I'm the one who added the arcana up there (The offending plurals). At the time, the page was pretty empty. I'm all for knocking off the plural and going singular for the families. But, I have already started a Category:Bombs page and am in the middle of populating it. How would I go about renaming it Category:Bomb? Would it just be create a new page with all the info from the old page and then delete the content of the Bombs page?
we can execute a move to Category:Bomb.Originally Posted by Tyros
in fact, I'll do that right now for you. edit: aha. can't - looks like category moves are sysop only.I'll flag a sysop to move it for you.
Ah, ya, I noticed the move button on normal pages, but saw it was gone on Categories. I went ahead and dropped the plural on the bestiary page. I left Category:Bombs and Category:Lizards since those both have active pages.
I suggested in another thread to keep actual info. in its own article. Think like Wikipedia: There's Bear, Category:Bears, and individual bear pages. So we'd have:Originally Posted by Tyros
Bomb (Family*) : Talks about the monster family's abilities
Category:Bomb : Just a category. Nothing more, nothing less.
Bomb : Talks about the individual monster called "Bomb".
*You could also use type instead of family.
I also recommend this for stuff like Dynamis/Limbus/Assault/etc.
I think that, given that we don't have the taxonomic complexities of wikipedia; that we should leverage the category page to talk about the family.
in the case of mobs whose name matches their family name (crawler comes to mind) we disambiguate at the top of the page: "did you mean Category:Crawler?"
Imo, for Crawler is should be category first, then monster. For something like Cerberus, vice versa.in the case of mobs whose name matches their family name (crawler comes to mind) we disambiguate at the top of the page: "did you mean Category:Crawler?"
well, except that currently monster names are: "monster name" and families are "Category: Family name" (see Category:Bomb)
so [[Crawler]] will link to the windurstian starter mob if we follow the existing system.
