FIXED FIXED FIXED FIXED FFXI-4401 FIXED FIXED FIXED FIXED!!!!!!
Here's what I did...
I bought a Netgear Switch (FS108) and am currently running the modem directly to it (uplink port). I have a cable running from the uplink port on a WG624 wireless router, to port #1 on the switch. I have one PS2 (newer model) running to port #2 on the switch, then an older model PS2 running to port #3 on the switch. HOW does it all work?
I could be wrong, so someone jump in and correct if I am.
Each cable modem stores one IP address that's issued automatically by your ISP. The router then shares that one IP address to anything connected to it. Our PS2, FFXI specifically, needs a specific IP address at all times. What I did is contact my ISP (Roadrunner) and requested two fixed IP addresses in addtion to what I already have. Which technically is three lines.. one for ps2, a second one for another ps2 and a third that's shared for all computers (router). If I connect another ethernet connection to the switch, that pc or ps2 won't work. Why? Because the 3 ip addresses I requested are already being used up. But if I hook up that same ethernet cable to the router, THEN I'll have a connection to the net. Obviously, if I connect another PS2 to the router it won't work and we're back to square one.
Each IP is an additional 10.00 bucks. But is it worth it? Hell yeah! I've been on for 1hr and 18 minutes and counting!
Also, everything is set to automatic. The key here is how many pcs or ps2s you want to hook up. If you have a pc and a ps2, then call your isp, request 1 fixed ip address. Then you'd get a small 5 port hub and run that BEFORE your router. The modem cable straight into the hub, then one cable for your PS2 and another for your router. Power up your PS2 first. If you power up the PC first then it may store the fixed ip address to it instead of the PS2. Also, to reset your modem, unplug it for 30 seconds or so (needs to be done).
If you have 2 ps2s then you'd ask for 2 fixed ip addresses as I did. 3 then 3 and so on..
The alternative to all of this is to unplug the modem from your pc and connect it to your ps2 each time. You have to make sure you unplug modem as the setting's for the pc were saved previously and not the ps2. Once you reboot your modem (30 seconds), then it'll store your ps2. Once you're done, you'd obviously have to connect the cable back to your pc and reboot your modem again. Questions?
