    Re: Taj

I find it funny that everyone reverts to that "lol don't share your password." Did these people get their shit messed with because the people they DID give their passwords to couldn't be trusted? No. Did they give their password directly to Taj? No. He violated their privacy and -took- the information.

It's easy enough to blame them for giving their information out to people they trusted, but why can't you? It's sad when you can no longer trust your friends, in case outside jerkoffs may be lurking and ready to mess you over.

I think if you can seriously trust your friends and recognize the risk of something bad happening, then fine, give out your information to a couple of people. Trusting their friends is NOT what got them in trouble. All had been fine if someone hadn't been deviant and "hacked" the forums.

So really, stop using that excuse in this case, it doesn't work.

I just think it's funny that when the minority was defending FFXIclopedia, and then they ended up being blatantly wrong, a bunch of people posted saying, "WAITING FOR YOUR APOLOGY IDIOTS."

And now that the minority is right about Taj everyone's like, "We couldn't have known."

I'm sure the people over at SE are laughing it up, too...even if they're reading this - because in reality this should be a lesson to anyone who shares passwords or accounts.

Of course people are too proud, up on their privacy high-horses, and won't pay attention to any lesson. They'd rather howl about their privacy being violated and get into the mob mentality. It's a violation of the ToS to share accounts at all and if I were a GM I would laugh as I suspend people who are calling me up saying their accounts were stolen after they shared the info online.

Probably better to just lock this thread instead of give Taj more attention with another 30+ pages of bullshit. It's exactly what he wants. >_>

That's because those of us who were right know it's a lost cause to get the majority to give 2 shits and actually call Taj out. See above.

Again, it's all lulz until it happens to you. Nobody who knows BG very well was expecting otherwise, but that doesn't include the OP. It's got to be pretty fucking saddening to him when he comes here asking for help after getting completely fucked over for no reason and 1) Taj doesn't post and likely couldn't give a rat's ass, 2) 90% of the people are accusing him of trying to start shit, blaming him for what happened because he trusted his friends with his shit (which, shocker, they were actually trustworthy), and 3) the other 10% are discussing robot hentai.

As was said before, at one point, this board actually was borderline respectable and helpful, but those days are loooong gone. Shame on Gordie for not knowing that, I guess.

    Seriously, locksies.

This from a guy who posted in the original thread and being one of the many who pretended he had no idea what the fuck was going on... or rather didn't add to the thread and come out with it from the start, when you and the entire shell obviously knew what was going on?

Lynsy is out of town, btw. She'll be home tomorrow.

People keep speaking without knowing anything. Taj had to promise not to log in/post again, so you won't be seeing him respond. Period. This was also covered in the other thread, briefly. Please read everything.

My mistake. Then truly, this thread really is going nowhere, since the point of the OP has zero chance of happening.

True, but it also doesn't negate the fact that people do need to stop sharing info. It's happened on my server, someone in a shell that shares like everyone's account with everyone... someone got pissed at him and cleaned him out. And no one in the shell will give them up.

And he didn't learn either; he joined a new shell and first time he couldn't be somewhere, he gave out his info to someone in the new shell. -.-

reason why i don't share my info is cause i don't think twice about bitching people out for doing something retarded @ ls events, i just fire off not giving a fuck if it pisses me off enough to say something.

Yes, that's exactly how it would be for me, except I'd never be the one in this situation.
No one knows my account ID or password other than myself, so no one would be able to use the method he used to get my password.

For me it's not an issue of trusting anyone, for me it's just following the rules that I accepted and click "Agree" to everytime I log in.
This kind of shit is exactly why SE made this part of the ToS.

Personally, I go by the same rule as my boyfriend. I don't give my account information out unless they're close enough that I can personally go kick their ass if something happens. (Or he could, at least.) I really don't give my information out at all, I think I have once and changed the password since then too.

However, I don't see why people should be crucified since there -are- trustworthy people out there and apparently this group of people had found theirs.

I think it just rubs salt in the wound by saying, "lulz you deserve it, you gave your password out to someone who could be trusted and didn't fuck you over. You're such a dumbass." Doesn't hit me as right!

Yah, I'm not saying it was justified in any manner. It's just more of a precaution in general. If you have a falling out with the shell or someone in it or something, you never know what could happen. ._.

This kind of shit is exactly why SE made this part of the ToS.
Say, for example, your brother/sister got into some shit with like...the mob. The mob breaks in to your brother's house, and finds a piece of paper with a code do deactivate your house alarm on it. They proceed to go to YOUR house, use said code to deactivate the alarm, and steal all your shit.

Then say, for example, you went to the police about this, and they laughed in your face saying "Why the fuck would you write our your code and leave it for someone else? That's a really stupid thing to do, you're not supposed to do that."

Clearly a fucked up situation. But since this is the internetz (which is not, contrary to popular belief, serious business), it's just lulz.

We can't do anything for the people who get their account stolen but laugh, or type meaningless sympathy posts. However, you can try to warn others so they do not fall victim to the same fate.

As for the 'info rule' you have, I like it. I know one person's account info, and noone knows mine. I have never written down, posted, or done anything with the info except memorize it. I have known the person longer than we have been playing FFXI. He can also walk to my house and attempt to kick my ass if I ever did anything. (Though, I have often comtimplated dropping his Warwolf Belt since it's a harmless prank and it would drive him nuts someday searching through his house for it...and I would buy him a new one.)

It's not exactly as simple as sharing your info or not sharing it, if a person is determined enough, though.

E.g. > I see on your profile you use AIM. Did you know their's currently a massive security (not to be fixed until mid Oct) on AIM that lets anyone else launch an executable on a target machine? Target doesn't have to to click any link or anything in the message, they just need to receieve the IM to trigger the launch of an application. So if you pissed someone off a lot and they knew how to program, they could install a keylogger on your machine if they were determined enough and had the knowledge, and harvest your account details that way. (I could do it if specifications on that security hole were released)

A better example would be how last year POL passwords and IDs were stored in plain text in memory, and hackers were able to harvest details this way (common method I think was for the actual trojans themselves to be embedded into fishbots). Or how someone managed to embed trojans into the Allakhazam banners, around 2 years ago. I nearly got targetted this way - I remember first noticing an exe called fuckme.exe (or something like that) in my process list and killed it immiedietly, only to find out later I got it from allakhazam and changed my password immiedietly .

Now while the 8-9 people who got hacked were guilty of sharing account details, I don't really think it's fair to lump them in the same category as people who were jacked by people they trusted, as you seem to be implying. It's more leaning towards the examples I gave, where they were just innocently playing when someone maliciously hacked into systems they thought to be secure and retrieved the acct details that way. A more accurate comparison would be having a text file on your PC named "POL account details.txt" and someone hacking directly into your machine and downloading that text file. It sucks, but it's not really their fault, the hacker is entirely to blame.

(And again, please lock this thread mods :3)
