We don't even have to shoot birds where I live. We have large windows across one wall of our dining room and birds slam themselves into it every few days. We pick their corpses off the porch below and toss them into the woods. It's really kind of annoying. There's never any blood or guts on the windows, so I think slamming into the glass just stuns them, but the ~35ft drop onto concrete below kills them.

I was doing some volunteer work at an animal rescue place for a while. A dove with a broken foot there got loose and slammed into the window so hard it shattered it.
