Buying a Used Xbox

I am looking for a an Xbox and was thinking of buying one used (Craigslist is full of offers). But I was wondering about how the warranty works since it seems the Red Ring of Death appears in 1/3 machines. In order to send it back to MSFT to get it fixed or to get the new one, what do I actually need to do? Do I have to show proof of purchase? Send it back in the original box?

Any information would be appreciated. My Wii has collected dust for the last two months and Halo3 is calling my name.

No, they ban the actual machine.

Just have them turn it on and test it out before you buy it from them. That is always what I do when I purchase off of Craigslist.

Thanks, I thought they'd ban the actually machine. I'll keep that in mind. Anyone know any information about the warranty and any needed information? Do I have to have any proof of sale or do I just send it in?

The warranty is based off the serial number, nothing else. If there is a problem, you call MS and tell them the SN and they ship you a box and you send it in.

Also, if you want, I can test out the gamertag of the person you are buying it from. I can add them to my friends list and confirm if they can actually go online or not. Let me know via PM if you want to do this.

It's only 3 years for Red Ring of Death.

If your system was built ~2006, you're covered for a lifetime, other than that its only 3 years.
They send you a free coffin to send in your system and shit. So even if you find an xb360 that's broken
but cheap, buy it and just get it fixed, and if they can't fix it they'll send you a new/refurbished one.

Rip off the front plate and see if the Microsoft tamper seal is still in tact. If it's not it's probably hacked/banned/busted in some way and I don't think the warranty will be good on tampered boxes.
