PC to TV question

I've been trying to transfer my PC video onto a Sony 40" Widescreen TV I have and I have had limited success, so I have a few questions. I'll go over what I have..

Radeon x1600 Vid card - VGA, DVI, S vid output
20" LG Flatron - VGA, DVI input
Sony TV - VGA, S vid input

I have it currently wired with the VGA wire from the video card into the input on the Sony TV and the DVI wire into the monitor. My monitor runs at 1680 x 1050 resolution. When I open my catalyst properties for the ati video card and try to switch devices I get a message on the TV that says, "unrecognized signal". If i unplug the DVI cable from either the monitor or the Vid card, then restart the computer, I can get the image on the TV. I'm not super technically adept, but I'm assuming with the DVI cable plugged in the computer recognizes the better of the two outputs and automatically uses a digital signal, which the TV can't recognize, but I don't know.

I really don't want to have to unplug stuff every time I want to watch a movie or use the TV as a monitor, so am basically wondering what my options are to remedy this. I know i've used S video cables in the past, but can't recall how the picture quality compared, or if this would even work now, since I would stil be using the DVI cable into the monitor.

In the Catalyst properties, the software recognizes the fact that there's a second display (your TV), right? And you've adjusted the resolutions as such? Also, you made sure that the input you're plugging the VGA cable into (on your TV) is analog (usually called PC IN or something)?
