Papelbon uses his mental powers to levitate 4 feet in the air.

    Re: 2007 MLB Playoffs

I really hope this is the early years of a dynasty.

Only four months until Spring Training. These are always the longest four months of the year

EDIT: Sox keys for a potential repeat run next year

    1) 3B - Keeping Lowell should be the top choice, obviously. A-rod wants too much money over too many years, the rest of the 3B free agent pool is very weak this year. The Sox farm system is about as light on 3B as it is in any other position besides Catcher. Not signing Lowell could potentially lead to moving Youkilis back to 3B, and signing someone for 1B. Certainly not the most favorable option.

    2) Starting pitching - Beckett's a monster, no surprises there. The rest of their rotation may not be as strong. Matsuzaka will surely be behind Beckett in the 2nd or 3rd slot. From there things get a little tougher to decipher. Wakefield's injury could be bad enough that the Sox don't pick up the $4mil option on his contract. Schilling may want more money than the Sox are willing to pay him ($13mil for a year). That leaves Lester and possibly Buchholz filling in the back end of the rotation. Clearly, that rotation without Schilling or Wakefield is both incredibly young, and only four deep.

$13mil for Schilling is a deal that should get made, both for his veteran presence and his postseason heroics. He is no longer a top of the rotation guy, and he may need an extended period of time off in the middle of the summer like he did this year. With Masterson still at least a year away from being in the big leagues, signing Schilling makes a lot of sense.

The rumored trade for Johan Santana is another avenue to explore. The downside for the Sox is that it would most likely include either Lester or Buchholz to go along with Coco Crisp and a top prospect, possibly Jed Lowrie. This would certainly strengthen the Sox rotation, however it would still leave them down a man with resigning Schilling, Wakefield, or even Tavarez.

    3) Backup Catcher - Should Wakefield not be able to return, it would stand to reason that Mirabelli would fall by the wayside. The Sox need to begin exploring their options for Varitek's eventual successor. Kevin Cash is not the answer, and neither is George Kottaras, their top minor league catcher. While the backup catcher role isn't their top priority, it's something that must be addressed sooner rather than later if the Sox hope to maintain an extended period of championship contending teams.

    4) Bullpen - Okajima, Delcarmen, and Papelbon can carry a postseason bullpen, but they can't do it alone during the regular season. Timlin is over 40, and Gagne won't be returning. Brian Corey will most likely have a spot in the 'pen to start the year. Their options for bringing up guys to fill out that bullpen include names like Craig Hansen and Devern Hansack, two "AAAA" players. A lot can happen with middle relievers moving around during the off-season, and the Sox will have to hop on the pitching merry-go-round this year to fill out their roster.

But these four months are filled with sports that matter. Football, basketball and hockey.

ARod opts out, Sox win the series, why I'm still breathing, I'll never know.

On a side note..my Yahoo sports page went something like this:

    "ARod opts out."
    sox sweep series
