Interesting fact: You can run mobs in circles around the Al Zahbi/Nashmau ferries...and properly done, they will deaggro from the confusion, even when DoTed. I used to kite sound-detection mobs around the ferry for fun and tentacle murder (it's easier with Gravity).

You might be able to park a few fished-up/spawned monsters that way at need. I've never tried it with an Apkallu though.

I did that before with an Orobon. He ended up POS-hacking through the cabin and caught up to me. Maybe it has changed! (My kiting skills rose 2 levels that day)

Or you could just use sneak. I haven't been devil manta fishing in ages, but I used to just cast sneak and fish up mobs. They'd pop and just chill while I fished for more mobs. After 4 were out, then up comes Mr. Manta. There's no need to kite around until they deaggro.

I was under the impression that this was changed some time ago and no longer worked. I recall trying to fish for them a while ago and reading about how this method was nerfed. I don't have a handy source to quote.

EDIT: to be clear having 4 up wouldn't force manta spawn, you just wouldn't catch anything if it was supposed to be a non-manta monster or something.

Pretty sure it still does it, but cant spawn a manta unless the window for it to be refished is up.

Aparently AA popped last night on a ls mate of mine. He said he was riding the boat and another group that was there was charming everything that popped, I guess they tried charming an apkulla and AA popped.

ok so i went and tried this charm thing cause i thought it was easy. charmed the one that walks around the boat normaly (not jump on he did not spawn). then i realized that i could sleep it with shiva (lol smn/bst) i just sat and charmed it until the boat docked. then a shiva crit did not pull hate off me and i remembered charm is a crap ton of hate. at the end of the boat ride i hit him with my staff for 48 dmg 3 times and on a mob that lvl i should have done near 100 (it did not guard and the crab i charmed on the boat earlier did more dmg then me). it seams that the eminity i caused on myself drove the hate up on apkallu (i did not kill it to begin with). then if what the person above said was true maybe it was not the charm but the eminity caused by it. since you have been killing apkallu generating near no eminity, AA may have never had the chance to pop (due to no need to keep hate) i propose this test:

excuse me if i try to incorporate the SE hints in this.
get a small PT (3+ for faster eminity) with one whm. that whm spams bar-spells generating massive amounts of eminity while you sleep the apkallu. then if this were the case, AA might be the one to jump on the boat (fulling the need to not be lonely and luck from SE hints). if this is the pop condition i doubt any one would have found it b/c it is utterly retarded.

the first test should be done though. dose generating eminity on the boat count as killing apkallu elsewhere?

He doesn't like being left alone, and will wander off if no one is around to keep him company.

Where are people getting the "He doesnt like being lonely" thing from? All I think this means is that he despawns if not touched rather quickly, we see it in Einherjar when the Pet pops, if you don't grab it they despawn in about 30 seconds. Also the Apkallus on the boat despawn if left alone for about 2 minutes. I really doubt it has anything to do with party numbers, other apkallus on the boat, or hate issues.

The charm idea is most likely his friend just messing with his head cause he knows he had been looking and looking for it, he even said on the way to Nashmau which SE was very clear about it not spawning on the way to Nashmau.

Also party numbers and hate shouldn't have anything to do with it, because he has popped with nobody on the boat before, or at least with nobody on the deck.

The luck hint probably just means he has a very long window like Proteus does and that you have to be on the right boat when he pops since there are always 2 boats heading back and forth. And I'd almost put money on him despawning quickly after he pops if nobody claims as the answer to the other hint.

Remember, there are no Ebon Panels on the Ship to Nashmau.

On those servers where he has popped, he must have popped invisible or something. Shikigami Apkallu, except without the magic aggro. But at least you could bring another apkallu around the boat to link it, if that was the case.

no bs i saw this nm maybe the 2nd day of TOAU. Remember getting my face stomped in as a 75mnk/nin he was just out in the open on the ship and he left when no one messed with him anymore, he doesn't agro.

This nm didn't exist at the release of ToAU, was added in the july 2006 patch.

I've tried about 10 times grabbing Apkallus and kiting them around the entire boat trip and so far nothing. I was thinking more along the lines of maybe he pops under the water(since the regular birds literally climb unto the boat under the rails) when i was trying this but no such luck so far. And besides me the Shikagami link theory has been posted at least 3 times in these threads. I've also tried letting the Apkallus depop when 1 or 2 was on the boat. I'm really thinking that he just has a long window and despawns rapidly. It's either that or hes on a Rose Garden/Taisaijin window condition I'm sure.
