    Need a new PC

I've given up on my harddrive and don't think it's worth just replacing it.

I'd like to get a new PC. I'm thinking it would be cheaper to get something with a good CPU, harddrive, and motherboard and just add Ram and a good videocard. Any opinions? Thinking about using this site too: tigerdirect.com

Send me the old one (*'-')b

This Dell is a great deal, and I don't even like Dell. Just get the price to $999 however you want, and replace the junky stuff with good stuff.

You could do this: (copied from Dell site) $658 after $350 coupon
    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6550 (4MB L2 Cache,2.33GHz,1333 FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium (upgrade to XP once it gets to your house)
20 inch E207WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs (replace with good ram, or just get good ram and no monitor)
    320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
    16X DVD+/-RW Drive
Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 (replace with a good card)
    Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Dell USB Keyboard and Dell Optical USB Mouse
    2year warranty and damage protection

Just upgrade the RAM and video card.

tigerdirect's customer service is deplorable, you're much better going to newegg.com, i've had a decent experience with zipzoomfly.com as well.

tigerdirect is also a bit more expensive than newegg and zip, i could saved about 1-300 bucks on my PC if i went with newegg instead of tigerdirect.

That said (I love these threads) what specs/budget are you looking at?

Yeah, if you're going to go by parts, always always go through Newegg. They're so just awesome there.

I *hate* Dell, but I'll admit that deal they have is pretty good.

I'd be happy with something that plays FFXI and ES4:Oblivion. So, I'm not aiming very high. Playing FFXI at it's fullest potential is really the only thing I'd like. Though, I got to say, I'd like something that won't age too quickly.

Getting something that can play FFXI is relatively easy. I use a P4 2.8 gHZ, 512 ram and a radeon 9700 pro that can play ffxi at 1280x1024 and background apps with minimal slowdown. Can't play Oblivion well at all though, I get frequent low FPS and longer than usual load times.

Your basic PC today should be able to play both reasonably well, even if you have to turn down graphics on oblivion. For something semi-future proof but still decent, an Intel Dual core, a gig of ram, and a decent videocard (sorry don't keep up on them as well) should be ok.

Yeah ffxi is a joke to get smooth run speeds on, Oblivion is a stress test, even with 8800 GTS video card with 640 mb of video memory I still occasionally get a reduced frame rate when too much is going on in oblivion, I suppose I could lower the settings, but what's the point of having such a nice graphics card and not trying to push it to its limit?

Whatever you do, do NOT order from Tiger Direct. I'm in the process of finding this website I saw a while ago that will persuade you to never use TD; I'll post it as soon as I find it.

I order basic stuff from TD like cables, flash drives, and headsets all the time because I get 1-day shipping for living so close to the warehouse. A lot of PC components are never what they are pictured as, though.
