Curious as to how people farm gil nowadays. More on a solo / low number basis. Not including 18 man BCs, etc.
Suggestions are welcome

I think alot of that depends on your job. Me being a whm I can't do stuff like amemet or other smaller nms/75+ mobs but I stick to things like sarutabaruta and konschat highlands and synth stuff like chips/sell silk etc
On MNK I do Alky/Pallas and THF Knife solo, probably not the best but it keeps me entertained for a while. Also do 2-3 ENMs a week with 3-4 people plus whatever assault point items I can sell from the pickups I join.
Buy low, sell high on a fields mule. I run across enough "amazing" deals to keep me in effortless pocket money. When I actually want to make gil in order to buy something expensive, I usually use BCs (enm, ks, bs). I used to pop coffers for astrals and steal for gold in the old days, but that got shut down. Typically made a lot more stealing than ever made off astrals (those were just a nice bonus). Gold-mask desynth isn't too bad, too, if you have your MH packed with stools.

This probably isn't the best sort of thing to write as my first ever normal post, but as a forum noob here I need to question my own sanity/ability to ask questions as well.Originally Posted by Tradition

Especially when it's not on the front page anymore and none of the words in the thread subject are the same? ...And the thread you pointed to isn't even close to the top search results for 'making money'?
If not, then I apparently completely misunderstood all the rules and disclaimers regarding posting in the 'newbie advice' section, and I should be shot for acting like an idiot. I have been told I don't get along well with others.
I have a massive wall of text I just wrote up in regards to the thread subject... I'll put it in a new post so I can be scolded and lashed accordingly for this one and still try to help the topic.
Ok, here you go. These are just my thoughts off the top of my head (at 5am while I can't sleep)... not necessarily reliable. No one thing works for everyone, so try whatever you please and hopefully find a way to enjoy yourself a bit even while farming.
Short-term ideas for day-to-day pocketchange... basic food, oils, tools, whatever is a few k:
--Imperial Coins. Not like golds are worth all that much, but it's at least a little gil if you're desperate.
--Taxi! Usually few if any around and I'm sure you see shouts around for people willing to pay 5-10k for a quick port.
--Quests. Seriously, just go down your quest lists and research how to complete them all and if it has any payout. If for some reason you've never done the DRK spells/Teleports/Warp-SleepgaII/Ninja scroll stuff, you've cost yourself plenty.
Slightly more risky/time consuming propositions:
--ENMs. Plenty of 3-person ones, or duos if you have the right jobs. A little time consuming, but hey it's free to try.
--EXP/Meritting. If you're a mage, or a 2-handed melee that can gimp along with cheap food and still not really be that gimp, or want to be gimped anyway and pray no one notices or cares, getting out there can profit in a few different ways. Meritting @ mamool ja staging works. Misc item drops to NPC, and low exp many kills = more chance for seals. Also results in juicy IS you might use on coins, or...
--Assault stuff. Gorgets, earrings. A week of small group easy assaults can probably get you 50-100k if you play it right, depending on your server prices. Be sure you assault rank-up whenever possible. Like ENM, Assault is entirely free, offers great variety and good entertainment, and has a variety of rewards.
Semi-long-term solutions:
--BC/KSNMs are still doable, though not what they used to be.
--Crafting can still work but you need a 'gimmick'. Meaning, research out what you could skill and where you money should eventually come from, or research what you already have skilled and do simpler low-lvl stuff. A lot of people would say crafting is completely pointless and a waste of gil at this point, but a skilled researcher can find a niche or two. Just take it really slow and only synth what you think will work.
--Join a sky LS. I feel dirty saying that. Look at some LS forums, read the rules, find something with a 'points' system where gil is a possible payout, put in time when you can, and cash out where possible. An incredibly skilled-yet incredibly poor friend of mine yanks out 1M+ in LS payouts a month because everyone else is blowing points/karma/whatever on everything else. Please don't think that I'm saying you have to join a sky LS, however.
Good longer-term solutions:
--Consolidate gear between jobs, if at all possible. Like, sell off a Foragers for an Amemet+1 while you're poor for what should be a substantial gain. Even the most perfectionist player isn't likely to say you're gimping yourself by doing that... and economics are something 99% of the populace has to deal with.
Probably the best long-term solution:
--Slowly replace your everything with ex/rare everything. Free stuff. Stuff that lets you sell what you already have. Since you said solo/friends I'll assume you're not going to do the sky/kings thing. Kudos to you, it can turn into a nasty habit. There's tons and tons of stuff out there you can replace with an identical or slightly different ex/rare equivalent. If you have any of the 'old' NM drops-- emp pin, boots, kote... camp and replace them. Easy to do alone. Remember all that IS you've been saving up by getting out to merit? The Perdu weapon series has some very good choices and might either let you sell an existing weapon or save you the trouble of buying a new one upon leveling something. You just need mercenary rank for that... but that's fine! You've been doing your free assaults, right? Save up some AP in particular zones for a few choice, useful armors... amir feet for heavy dd, say. I don't speak mage so I won't comment on others. Free earrings/gorgets/belts, too. Dynamis can also net you a few good things for an 'equivalent' of cheap, depending on job. Go try to abuse Nyzul Isle assault if you can get a good group going--some of that stuff is absolutely priceless. There's always Salvage too... you have plenty of AP, and really only the body pieces are absurdly expensive to finish.
Oh wait, better long-term solution:
--Don't get overly paranoid about being the best everything or having the best everything. You're never, ever, ever going to be the best/have the best. I might look at my JPN WAR role model, walking around in her full Armada set and drool, but hey that was her choice to spend her time with and spend her gil on. There's no shame in admitting that. You don't have to get a hauby+1, dusk+1, +1 JSEs, whatever. Depending on your playing style and the people you're around, this can be hard to work through. It took me 2 full years of kings withdrawal to admit to myself I'd never get a ridill. By then, I realized I had enough of the right other gear and merits to where it wasn't the most wrong thing on earth anymore. ...Then they changed 2-handers and I now laugh at WARs who were so proud they flunked out of college to get a ridill, just to get equaled or trumped by my meritted war/sam with [free] Perdu Voulge and [free] Askar armors.
It is worth noting that this doesn't mean you should be lazy-- your make a particular effort to get 5AA/DM done, finish CoP for a ring and limbus items, finish ToAU for a free ring, do AN for an earring, etc. Even something 'hard' like swift belt can be done in a small group. All of those things? Entirely free, or with a pop item you can farm yourself for free. Depending on your job and role, all those things can be used 100% of the time if you'd like. Like, I know my NIN is entirely functional for normal day-to-day usage using supp, brutal earring, rajas and ull ring, and swift belt all the time if I'd like. No one should look down on you for using all that entirely free stuff for non-serious activities (re: not kings, etc.) that you hopefully had a fun time obtaining.
That's what you play XI for, right? "Fun"? You don't even have to feel gimp for having fun--a smart, skilled player using nothing but free items and has meritted him-or-herself out well should always do better than a moron with a kraken and speed belt they bought off RMT.
Learning how to use the search function is useful. This just looks for "gil" and "money" in topic titles on the newbie forum only.Originally Posted by Aymee

As for me, I just watch certain craftables closely and jump in when the profit margin is good, and stand back when idiots destroy it by undercutting the hell out of each other. Also never throw anything away, if you have to you can NPC it. The little shit does add up to cover your day to day expenses.

That's a habit I've forced myself to get into. I used to drop "crap" all the time because I didn't want to bother running to a vendor to sell it, now I vendor it every time.Originally Posted by Dammerung

Maybe I should try leveling Fishing?![]()
For farming mobs I'm partial to ones that always or almost always drop stuff over ones that have less common but higher priced ones (elementals or CN lizards as opposed to buffalo). If you can craft something out of it yourself it helps quite a bit as well. I'm trying to think of a few NMs you can low-man with 2-6 people that have decent $$$ drops, but SE made the old Jeuno Gil HNMs drop EX stuff mostly. Those are also boring as hell.![]()
biggest thing for money? Find a hobby. Seriously, find something to do with all the empty time you have instead of staring at the AH or whitegate moogle. I can't imagine the number of people who complain "I don't have money" and all they do is sit in whitegate with their seek flag up. Your hobby can be anything from synths to choco digging to taxi to whatever. If your hobby takes up too much time (like having to clean out your inventory for synths) find something in addition that is relatively quick and easy. Keeping myself busy between all the events and xp parties and stuff I do is what gives me my day-to-day money, and if I need more I take time to do some things that are more involved.
Move to China.
Limbus farms, and sell/split HNMLS keeps me in decent pocket change.
Good post, enjoyed reading it. Kudos to you for writing it. ^^Originally Posted by Aymee
I make a bit of money soloing jobs, mainly BST. Drops are worth a bit depending on zone, but it's the seals that really make it worthwhile. I currently have 8 stacks of seals waiting to be used up, and I BCNM/KSNM on a fairly regular basis.
Oh duh, BST... lol. I can't believe I forgot that... one of my best friends has the same issue of literally being unable to spend all her BS/KS and is more concerned with using them to help people get particular drops or the KS unlocked criticals weapons than actually making gil out of it ... she can wait for LS KS99 for that >.>Originally Posted by Midnightjade
