My card is a bit older but it still runs orange box games at 30 FPS. Some will consider that slow but honestly its not like the human eye can see a huge different past a certain point. For reference its a Radeon X1600 with 512 MB.

I just played through again, this time with the commentary on. Its worth it if you're an information pack-rat like me. I love knowing all the little tid-bits that go into a games production. There is even a tiny plot point that is explained by the commentary in the final boss room.

Some of them are quite ludicrous; I easily got <55 steps on lv6, only to be told to beat 20. Beat 20, and then got told to beat 10 rofl...

I can't figure out how to beat the boss. >_>;

At first I tried to use the portals to shoot the missile at the thing in the middle, but it didn't work. So then I tried to shoot it into that.. incinerator thing and it didn't work. ; ;

For the missiles, shoot a portal under the clock thing in between the two bars coming down off it, iirc. It will be a direct hit if the missile comes out of it on a straight trajectory. Make sure you stand in front of the missile or have the portal positioned in such a way that when the missile goes in it comes out straight so it hits the Boss head on and doesn't veer off. Hitting it will cause it to drop a little head thing in a various spot. They are predetermined; the first will be on the ground and the other two will be in the air around it so simply look up for them and use portals properly to reach them.

It will be obvious which of the two above things you need to do by what is going on. If the machine is talking shit and you aren't being followed by a blue laser then you need to find the head thing floating around somewhere, otherwise you need to portal that missile into the boss.

This is correct. Use the rocket launcher's laser guide to aim, exit portal directly under the big timer.

Apparently being able to run HL2 perfectly smooth says nothing for my computer's ability to run Portal. I just got done beating it in slow motion strobe visuals and skipping audio.

There were only 2 or 3 parts that actually required speed and skill, jumping through portals and having to shoot another portal to go through without landing to keep up speed. And in the conditions that I'm playing in it was hard as fuck.

So I'm pretty sure attempting the advanced levels and challenge modes will just make me cry.

cue the darth vader "noooo" image. The dialog is incredible, I would turn my graphical specs down to as low as possible before turning off the audio.

Yeah...

Resolution was the one thing I didn't think about changing. But I thought of it when I woke up this morning and everything runs smooth smooth smooth.

I've rebeaten the game several times just to savor the experience as it should be and I've beaten all the advanced levels and worked my way through a good portion of the challenge mode.

2.2ghz 156mg graphics card, 1g ram good for this game or will run meh?

Probably. I've worse than you, except for the ram (2gig here). I lowered graphic slightly to get a decent fps, but that's about it. The game isnt graphically impressive, and I barely noticed a change when I dropped them.


Is there any trick for the step challenge? I'm not able to beat any.

Do you get anything or unlock anything special after you beat the challenge mode 100%, I was halfway through 17 when portal froze and when i re opened the game and finished 17 the game had forgot my completion of all the prior levels. So, unless it unlocks something else I wont bother re doing them all again.

I'm only one gold away from finding out.. but i can't even get the fucking bronze on the level. Steps on 17 i think? (companion cube one). I haven't tried it that often enough to find if there are any step-saving tricks though :/

I run it on a Sempron 3000+, 768mb DDR RAM, 256mb Radeon 9800 Pro AIW. It's really not very graphically demanding in terms of card features. Runs with just a hint of chop at 1680x1050 for me, if I lower the res at all, it's smooth.

Got it last night, finished basic mode this morning, haven't tried any others. I enjoyed it greatly, which is something I haven't said about many games recently. Looking forward to advanced/challenge.

Just finished Challenge mode fully. Nothing special from that alone.

I still need to do the detach all security cameras from the walls achievement before I'm completely done with the game though. I'll do that tomorrow to see if I get anything for doing all this shit lol.
